Specific duties vary with positions and Departments and involve performing general labouring duties that may include:
; M  [# X! J  G$ K* Z+ I; ~' zDrainage Services, Asset Management & Public Works
•        Construction of sewer lines, catch basins, access and drop manholes, watermains, feedmains, hydrants, ditches, water appurtenances, concrete structures such as storm outlets.
•        Digging holes and trenches by hand, excavation activities on major open cut projects ensuring placement of shoring, timbers, and struts; cutting, grinding levelling, jointing and laying of pipe.
) y- \* t* a$ ^3 f% c1 \2 f•        Repairing sewer services, main lines and pumping stations; cleaning sewer and drainage systems by low pressure flushing; assisting drainage servicemen in inspecting, rodding and televising sewer services; repairing manholes and catchbasins; assisting equipment operators in performing high pressure flushing and vaccuum cleaning activities.
Parks, Asset Management & Public Works
. K- f/ M& [2 V# u' n( C1 E1 t•        Maintenance of parks: mowing, herbiciding and sanitation of turf, shrub and flower bed maintenance, marking & maintaining sports fields, playground inspections and servicing.
•        Construction of parks: manual labour using hand tools such as shovels, rakes and stake pounders.
0 _* k2 r' h: O$ x) [* k: P•        Park service and trail maintenance: including sanitation of picnic sites, amenity buildings, repair of signs, roadways, trail surfaces, irrigation & homeless camps.
7 H9 R# d, ^* p5 c# E•        Forestry operations including various arboriculture tasks- assist in the development and maintenance of the urban forest.
•        Pesticide Applicators license an asset.
•        Labourers may be provided with rate up opportunities where required.
Roadway Maintenance / Traffic Field Operations, Transportation
•        Asphalt/concrete repairs, cracksealing, and paving.
, T6 Y+ I' ^7 l% u/ W3 ~9 I•        Performing structural concrete/steel duties on bridge maintenance (must be able to work heights).
•        Pouring, spreading, tamping and leveling soil, sand, gravel and concrete.
1 m6 v! }  m$ {" ^•        Working in traffic during street construction/maintenance projects.
•        Installation, maintenance and removal of road markings, traffic / detour control devices.
Recreation Facilities Branch, Community Services
•        Golf course, driving range, and park maintenance including turf mowing, fertilizer and pesticide application.
•        Internments at cemetaries; concrete pouring of foundations and markers; monument restoration.
* E0 i7 c! p. S2 r$ ]/ n0 ?•        Operating and performing minor maintenance with equipment such as: small hand tools, push lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, small rototillers, and chain saws.
2 o, u$ Z) H/ v( ^& P% K/ S•        Set up and take down of furniture and equipment for events and bookings at Recreation Facilities.
( K- Y3 q2 k% e! i: k! A: d•        Assists with on-going general facility maintenance and cleaning at Recreation Facilities.
Functions of all positions:
" {3 q) E! S8 P, V2 T1 U•        Loading and unloading materials from trucks.
•        Assisting tradesman and other more experienced staff & performing other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
& R( ?: o) X! R* |5 {7 L  [•        Completion of the eighth school grade or equivalent.  Must be indicated on application/resume.
8 j- A) k' m2 K7 x! ]2 C9 ?' c•        Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Must be indicated on application/resume.
•        Applicants may be tested, and where required to operate a City vehicle, must attain a City of Edmonton driving permit upon appointment.
+ M& _: J0 o- j  T/ H/ t8 f) I•        Physically capable of performing heavy labour work for extended periods of time under various weather and traffic conditions.
•        Manual dexterity to operate simple hand and/or power tools and small equipment.
•        Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
9 k! I9 a5 f0 A: x8 g6 T•        Team player & self-motivated, possibility of working alone on scheduled shift.
0 S) c( a6 x6 RHOURS OF WORK: Up to 40 hours per week. Hours of work will vary with each position.  These positions may be subject to shift work, providing coverage 7 days per week.  Please indicate if you’re interested in shift work.
SALARY RANGE: 10M, Salary Grade: 013, starting at $15.11 (Hourly).  Rates are based on employee status and length of service. The rates quoted are in accordance with an agreement between the Union and the City.
