5 k9 c+ z5 y! w4 d, hEDMONTON — Southgate Centre today began a $108 million expansion to accommodate more than 30 new retailers and restaurants.

The two-year project, facing 111th Street, will add 126,000 square feet of leasable space on the ground floor — and two levels of parking above.

“Part of the redevelopment will include enhanced site lighting and closed-circuit TV security systems monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Southgate general manager Paul Fairbridge.

It also will include hotel-quality washrooms and private sitting rooms for nursing mothers., Q; w# X! _1 f% v" y6 K0 c
; t- x- E d8 m: x3 c$ T" e/ iThe expansion is expected to create at least 500 new full-time and part-time jobs.

! `# w( r; v7 d. g7 I- y& kSouthgate, a 36-year-old mall located south and west of 51st Avenue and 111th Street, now has 130 stores and services. It is owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge, based in Montreal.
