Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
. ?! r4 E) O" j z( {9 J" ^"I am going to send it back". 2 ]: O% G R2 I- R- p. r& u
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:* o7 ?' u$ D7 w- k4 |8 {2 N" B
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?" 3 t! F+ j6 k5 H
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." 5 w6 C& E. _7 H2 A$ S" f. p7 O
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
8 Y; U- m5 |! v+ s$ m. A& S- w+ u, k"Yes, I did."5 g" a" Z1 W$ k$ E) T0 s* V/ j( j( i
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
4 P5 }$ m7 i2 XHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. 9 R) U* w: Z! |1 B0 c
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
: P' I0 r E3 {* Z' |' D) q5 a"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
! Y& A" A; @# V1 |2 o0 X/ N9 M/ _6 MHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. ( i" l7 D* ]8 o" C
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:& s7 L8 ^. V/ N% ]; U+ l0 a
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
% s( D" l& A. g3 N( Y6 ^"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
9 m. ~" u6 T* a8 w( q. J"I do not have an address."7 m5 @1 B% [; v E% [, @& r1 S, q
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
4 f& y+ B, I9 @He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
Y7 @9 g7 H8 ~) x' nMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
& k2 \" U) o2 i7 j V( s+ KHe did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
