1) Community Dialogue Project Phase 1

S( B4 y4 g5 KIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community. K6 ^8 S% p. }' w$ ?
Engagement Training." I- Q& ~* ^7 \) S! O
+ |8 S- y! v c: N/ sWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
& a2 k+ g: o3 m0 }8 w* u0 O(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood" Q) S- g- O! q: y+ E9 }* G
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work# |+ z- ? X5 ~1 Y3 ]8 Z
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
- d8 I) B: \' F5 kCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.3 {) x0 O \( q0 R0 }7 P

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
, R/ T$ k3 ~) S# f5 xof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
5 h9 |2 {3 u% P( T1 {conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
% E5 k7 j8 w" `2 P1 W) M1 L; qinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:) ?* y, V* a7 T3 N
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
5 n6 r' a4 ], C& K1 wIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 S, ]' G7 g2 O2 v$ Sisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
e x3 K# f. A) [. i1 K6 @7 p" i+ iinternational peacekeeping operation.
+ k+ f" ~) K" P4 L' l
0 w/ ~- j' @2 `" U* I2 k2 mThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their+ {/ p: Z1 J9 V& p5 |8 \- W
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people/ e6 Q8 O% C5 k$ m a
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV

Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems$ A& G+ _, E2 P$ |4 V
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
& {2 H- L& _! \; o8 z3 Nand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
( W$ s6 U i& a9 p x% q6 G2 |! I6 _1 R; D5 e
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the% z# g0 B6 u8 D. B# _9 B5 O5 M
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
% s& d, K+ g) K0 u+ @* @2 Mprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the9 l& @" M9 m8 ?% m
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
0 U* }/ q O6 S. w- EAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
2 i' Y) p7 \( p) |; _7 eso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
