- q5 j- L; t9 \! J% X0 U+ OIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community, O4 o3 I& d$ v5 b! O
Engagement Training.: ?1 p0 L7 U' j/ E& ?
6 Y: }6 {5 s" b! vWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,( c4 j4 G2 ^+ ~5 V* O
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
; x* N* g4 p% E1 N( ` w ~groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
# |0 m0 f) f$ |3 s5 Ztogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
9 |, q4 o( l" m3 V# nCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South1 c& c4 x" ~0 f) @9 m9 |
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years' h( H; y/ B4 H( s, X' g$ p- o: b) s
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
f4 \! p# w7 ]6 l$ uconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the- P- J7 l4 V, j- h. d ~4 f
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:+ s* S+ `3 f+ N t
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter' d9 h4 N* [% G* x! V+ P
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
( I# I; d* E$ h6 h P8 Disland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed, M9 _ u6 e1 @0 q3 e$ C
international peacekeeping operation.
l& F4 _6 e0 e5 f. f, \5 `: L: {6 t3 D7 I& t' G
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
8 j5 V0 a! L7 S- l/ R* uown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
4 S8 l5 B. H6 q$ J, r# b$ v- Iwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
) a* b ^+ n( {- xscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
& S# N, Q5 S+ hAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems9 t0 @2 S T3 h5 ^% `2 V* t
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
6 L9 U7 J+ l2 J: ?and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

3 f" v1 q; F( l/ S% |0 x; q8 t, BAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the$ n! @2 ~% f1 _
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole7 l5 {$ z$ a* p, a* P. _( B
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the* S# {3 L$ D ]% D& F# M
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
. n. j5 f6 D% c# AAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,8 h; c' R! _2 d8 ^, k5 B
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."! D# E& O* @4 a9 w# s8 Z9 W
