I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.

Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
9 C+ e" ^1 ^( D# q) t/ D; W9 k(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
! y1 m% s$ s& x3 @* Y5 p% j# W% i9 d5 Lgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
5 e0 g+ n6 p( B1 n0 btogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy& j0 Y4 o# v8 M+ ?4 W
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.: z1 I2 y. _. L+ ]3 i$ {/ ]/ Z

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South

of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
9 ^* i. G7 ?* [; B1 Gconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the* B2 X* x" E' L8 j2 k+ X% B$ E
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:# I! k! R. V$ @# ?' H9 h, I* _" V; @! C
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter' Y! d. p7 t6 F2 q
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 W) ~2 o: e: R9 U7 f2 kisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
+ `/ {, S# U- U* I# l( Z0 finternational peacekeeping operation.- g) @% t k& |
' \8 A2 n% o: ]- g( RThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
7 t9 z# u, r8 A( V2 G l Down story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
7 x& A. W( [- p( y" G' H8 Fwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
$ s5 @1 Z6 I$ h: I9 wscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and% ?4 o" Z% Q/ y. P4 f9 ?: u7 y+ `
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems+ i: N9 x- a: S4 ~4 w0 O; j
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
* n( g8 Q: @& ]/ F( V) Y3 ]and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!! m1 Q* q0 |+ R
* W+ A7 o- a, X3 H, i% Q: j
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the* e0 z& e5 o+ @; Q( @
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
! ?7 k6 o, b' G, w5 b/ Sprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the* _4 p0 H' W( O8 x6 {& Q* @
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.5 }' g0 z* r1 Q1 b
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
$ o- n" h9 u% o: ^6 `! Oso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."1 \: f6 Z+ y V+ T
