8 ]! _" l1 Q& d& \+ B) i4 o2 l7 K% W( W2 D. [
I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro.
+ }  r3 m% b$ G* H) HHe has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money ! `$ |6 h3 y. X
for youth at risk programs.
9 B5 A) v. z! b6 \! u5 @0 G+ |7 O5 Q) U. L  F/ T
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you
$ d' v, q: r- {0 jwhy I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young ; a5 i" y! P1 p. B) f
man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable
( a" d  _0 A9 B* vto stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training : `7 [5 z& o. k  K/ u* N: K  R
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
( f: a' l7 X$ {When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted
: E& ]* K$ H+ h- W! t; }to be and do when he grew up. 6 q& o5 \* c3 H. t9 G
; j- f: \8 I" R" ~
'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday
% [. Z+ s  ?& q6 mowning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even * d, ?& }1 i% B& N! L0 A! j
drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings,
% o& N4 L# a) ~; dthe stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot & U- o+ d; B% c4 S/ I8 S* ]- @
house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. - U2 r. b, J/ w) s2 r! S5 `! k

8 ?# I5 J1 e7 r. |! t'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he 4 @9 K3 s* l9 g+ }5 x
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. 4 G1 r( f. w" P! i; U5 P
On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after , L4 A9 D- L, n4 X( Z3 h6 \8 s
class.' * y4 g% N* p# O: i/ |

" G8 m# z' H* X8 n8 E3 X'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked,
3 I# P. h9 b1 H) c% [' l# y2 [`Why did I receive an F?'
# q7 z$ s' [- p/ ?9 ~8 Y
* v9 `) v  @" X! C# l: O" E'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. , d- Q" a8 l# q# h
You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. + W* u6 G- |4 W7 J7 A' \
Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land.
2 z9 |. }  e0 }( m; L0 X4 Q0 TYou have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to 3 e5 i' V' A5 [, F, ~: W- {
pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher + T, v/ Y3 @) }7 o
added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will
8 G- c4 ]' t" Y/ Dreconsider your grade.’ - ]+ R3 Q. N/ P$ h  m" [: I
1 f% l* F* T+ b- m2 G1 H# P* p4 y
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father
8 c- T6 O1 p" R$ F# R7 ]9 Qwhat he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your
7 ]/ V% m! o* S8 ~- m$ P* kown mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for ) N. x) t6 f- i% ?* p
you.’ 1 o! d) t3 `. a3 j. w% W, F9 g1 i

6 w3 l' {1 O0 ~1 J5 ~2 x' J& o'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
: m- K7 E( l" X2 Ipaper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll
, X1 |* _8 y+ |# \0 R; Y  qkeep my dream.''
( ~+ j: t3 g! M
4 Q* ?8 |5 M& sMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story   j" r, k) ~2 ^2 T$ P6 ^. U! G9 z
because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of
, E" v6 ^1 N- V: J/ ^my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
7 @$ ~, B# T# x! ?  L  rfireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago
: z+ t7 G/ E6 y9 r( }* X, _that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'
& ]- B: Y9 v! e: [6 H7 F2 mWhen the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this
/ u; }- v% s& C2 h" r* know. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During * Z$ b$ z: J" p* C
those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption + y* |3 B3 j2 O0 B  D4 H/ U, t# a
not to give up on yours.’'

Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
