Follow Your Dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. ; y5 }( f; Y" M: g. n/ j, c
He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money . ?4 G0 C) T) E, x
for youth at risk programs. 2 q  y! k! R7 Y8 T# H

. p7 k( |% |9 _( h7 _The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you : f: B/ q; J' T* d3 Q8 h
why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young
0 D$ Y, X9 X4 J. Y6 @& d- Cman who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable ! T6 x6 r5 H; f) \
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training . J1 N: t: t1 G: h' R7 V0 `1 y% z
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
8 y* t+ P7 j# P5 @* TWhen he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted & C* N$ f/ [2 w* S: q. ~
to be and do when he grew up.
5 i- C1 t# V+ h3 l- d$ f/ A
" ]  p( \: \$ ^* ?$ D'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday - I( u3 {: i  Z2 k3 k" T
owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
3 n( `' c$ w  S7 I4 U0 R* c6 ?: Y; bdrew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, % d: z9 a; V: e+ h  {- n
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot 4 x* Y. F. E/ e( y
house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. & c. k: X0 u% h! g

9 Y7 p! F2 ]4 n( o3 r'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he 7 v7 F7 V* s: X6 H
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. 5 l' p8 x5 [: r: F# U6 n7 t
On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after 5 D" {3 M/ f. B* N! G9 i
class.'
+ w1 c) `/ N# w- m5 Z2 E. B# R5 }. g2 D6 t' s" \% t  _4 ^' n
'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, & f6 m1 c% w1 o4 a0 F
`Why did I receive an F?'
! `! e  ]8 V7 W  X3 b5 {9 n
" m" a) }+ e: k: W5 f  ~5 W'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. ! X+ D4 F$ @) n
You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. 7 B0 o% d+ e  b/ B* o" ~* S. ^
Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. $ Q  @3 e9 b" V
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to $ V  Z; s+ x) i+ w/ ^1 O
pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher / e. n* E3 s$ i2 X
added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will 1 }6 I% G) }* f5 L
reconsider your grade.’ 3 X; ^* G( \5 l9 I: z7 j8 j: ?; N
2 w# X; j& M. F* C9 Y& z! _, M% i" n8 J
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father
8 |* ]& h9 V- z$ K/ iwhat he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your ( E- m% y. P. V: C0 i
own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for 2 r1 x& q0 f6 f$ B& _6 p/ O! ~
you.’ 1 J+ t* r6 k4 b% n" ~' S

0 O; d6 i% d, _+ t6 j" ^'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same - {. e" G% b8 F- R7 e4 i2 E" `
paper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll
3 i! G0 z5 O: ^$ y1 r3 T, d; Jkeep my dream.''

' i0 @# n9 s; q# ]& q1 jMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story
# r% ?! F0 Z& y" B. s$ t, O; Wbecause you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of 1 d* D3 W' _. j8 a" l6 |
my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
2 ^/ z4 h% P- p8 cfireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago
! R# t9 ~5 y, B' s8 x$ rthat same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.' $ e" ^0 N* S7 E9 y; e5 T
When the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this
" h2 v0 S) R( Onow. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During
! M" b' u9 `0 d' S3 ]& F! Ithose years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption
3 O6 Q7 K3 g7 ^  \1 t! g$ Jnot to give up on yours.’'
  O* h9 U2 c9 t% D( U' D7 }7 U6 \6 g- P# f) x! K
Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
