Follow Your Dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. + p7 r7 C1 M0 O$ L
He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money
) d0 a# u8 Q7 L+ S1 |for youth at risk programs.
4 h/ ~8 S1 c2 t, F0 h6 J9 R* u7 V
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you   o! @  p# D7 B! l- [. x
why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young
- X' M8 j0 |8 n2 l! C. c% Sman who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable
: m1 A/ P* k  U$ [( C" Xto stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training 1 H+ X. Z; w+ \% ^4 p, P
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. 6 B7 ?, y; s& @5 t  [
When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted
# [# e$ |* K% C. s( |- z. Jto be and do when he grew up. 9 \! s4 A  C5 W9 F) B' b% z

7 L# ~. U; p8 p$ ?'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday
- {# Z" g0 B$ u+ t' Bowning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
# d. D% P( j' z0 {drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, 3 N$ ?% V  Z: t9 P
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot ! H" @1 x" [5 D7 J
house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. ( v4 C9 y+ E5 |6 q* R
* R$ Q3 T* p/ j* @
'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he " w' b+ J. o- C+ k: X1 i9 @& f
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. 4 {2 e! `# X6 W& N
On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after ( r$ R) G5 ~$ _: @% f7 F
class.' - w% y& h. U4 B" q

  M1 Z; s9 ?5 _9 e& Z! v! G8 e'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, % n, }% m$ d0 s; s) s
`Why did I receive an F?' 3 {. {- R4 z9 t2 K2 S% j: p0 e3 ?

& C$ j: W( k! \'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. 7 e" @7 ?- R' b6 |" W, q; t/ Q& ]2 A' J9 F
You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. 5 Q; d" Z2 o8 y9 l) I6 [' X
Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. * u) U& C# k$ i) d2 h: F7 t
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to
0 h5 ]8 A) l  c, f4 v( H- m5 }pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher
/ I. m# \% g7 {added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will - @5 I, [- o- _' e& P
reconsider your grade.’
" G* g, V/ E( h2 N8 O  j5 p# X! m/ G; m- ^% A
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father # b8 [4 C# `8 t
what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your ; o8 ]; a( k3 s8 H
own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
, c# z- Z$ `9 t1 k3 vyou.’ 5 c. `2 x: N  X# g1 g8 C
$ j6 e; j9 }3 Q( @5 O' O: d; H8 U/ g
'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
! ^+ `) F+ z* o/ e2 [paper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll : x3 |( B2 b0 r, [  M4 K
keep my dream.''
. Z) P' b- v0 d5 w: r( [0 c. h+ E& m/ m9 ?9 {* f
Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story
% {) y' t  ^) s! a8 k% F9 x) Ibecause you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of 2 H* k0 l2 E" v) _
my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
( Q# A3 Z& o* m0 ]' l5 U. @fireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago
$ r2 f* R$ H  h2 [& |! l, bthat same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'
7 Z9 `* J; {; JWhen the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this
9 Z  t. ?, a2 i( Vnow. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During # x7 x; L% E9 u" W. |
those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption
# O' ^- Y% n" m/ Qnot to give up on yours.’'
