Follow Your Dream

6 k; A+ S! L: ?0 |: h8 t+ c6 |I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro.
/ x. P7 i/ x2 a9 ^. S) D9 {* q- {He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money
4 \) t7 ]) E; Wfor youth at risk programs. : m! r: w8 g" i& Y; k; I3 t/ y

- F2 ?! `, f. Q. @: mThe last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you
+ L1 X! p1 ?7 Qwhy I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young
! s% V+ Z  \5 c: `4 t1 J7 pman who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable
9 k+ \" O( t; W0 |5 W1 c+ tto stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training 6 _' n4 }! w& U+ }
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
" R7 w$ L5 x& Y! r6 |6 V% l, eWhen he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted
: l+ L" x" w3 n$ U$ }$ Ato be and do when he grew up. ! t, M  O, N3 B9 R5 ?* W6 M$ f4 d

7 Z! p0 O8 t% G# g( ^'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday ( p3 [% E6 L, Z. n# d- T6 I
owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even 8 t: K( ]$ \& S8 E* Q. R
drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings,
  O5 {- l/ l& Y& `3 o( ?the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot
9 I- ~; g" U' E6 o2 `house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

* S6 O0 T3 [1 [' ]3 M, E% s* d9 V'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he * O3 J/ T9 r  [
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
2 w. Y: `: m2 l, ~2 `9 NOn the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after
4 V' @8 x0 W# ~7 l8 l; i& `. Hclass.'
  P6 x/ i- U9 r, A$ m1 }. E7 k: t- h7 v8 J
'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked,
, n( c3 w# o" B`Why did I receive an F?' , l. S3 w) S: u2 M

  T3 l7 F6 F2 F0 O8 _4 c'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
# d- [3 q% n0 y* \, J# p! ~- vYou have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources.
# W+ \3 ]) j, {Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. # \+ F7 x8 ^8 l$ C7 u
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to ( i) m/ \2 L0 f0 ]
pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher ) A/ t8 ]) \$ D- j
added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will
" z2 _) B* Q3 {- C4 P$ T. qreconsider your grade.’
+ O) h( H0 z4 P- K  }+ F, t, C3 y9 g+ {+ f1 h- R8 I1 o
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father : |7 \/ Z/ [) g! y4 G. N, ^3 q0 {" g. i
what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your
/ E8 P: x/ S2 k- W3 g5 q. \( Oown mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
2 }8 U0 d% E# M( R2 d8 W+ _you.’
+ p3 g% r7 }! g, h$ O% y  [- U: A. T" {7 x" j% A& H6 j
'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
9 P) }$ c! t( E8 Q% u6 D+ Upaper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll ' V7 b  ~" o8 c. H
keep my dream.''
, |  Z6 V% l" E1 C
* x# M0 \  ?# c/ O" rMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story . ]% M1 ~- E0 q/ f5 M" ?( o3 k
because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of
/ J4 ^* `1 F9 ?0 j/ J; }/ Fmy 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the ) L1 o; A$ w6 w# I4 G0 ]' g3 Z
fireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago 3 T0 S7 }: @/ j4 r# s7 u% p
that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'
8 j; F1 |; y% I4 JWhen the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this 5 a) i5 h9 b8 f( f/ \# m( j! t
now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During 8 O" j! V( R/ ^+ O
those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption
& V7 P3 w; C4 `% {not to give up on yours.’' 6 A6 ^1 B6 ?: y# n; I

5 ^" x+ `, |; IDon't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
