　　North country scene:

　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall

　　One single white immensity.

! W( j- V) g) |' p7 }: `　　The Yellow River"s swift current

9 d& M3 w0 ^% u' g　　Is stilled from end to end.
+ p2 o" a. m# K1 G/ U9 v% _
　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
8 b- Y( f/ A4 E# T
; t( ?3 P3 i+ z. t( K% f3 ]　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

+ r$ a3 t; P* W. ?1 t% g+ L0 Q　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

# B' o  {# e+ m　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

$ C, X9 O  N# r. j$ W　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,
* t$ o' z( a7 G& u
　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

' I2 F4 l  B9 F! k2 x: _- `5 }　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

7 J& d8 X$ W5 O5 n3 S$ ], V　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
