As a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
]% V! u1 S- j CConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.- r6 a' l) ` ^; \. M% b+ S
5 {* T, Y& y1 x1 r8 s. m' B“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
# l/ Y5 X! v: s" Z4 a' |: P“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

' M* n5 l! ~7 B' s& {Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal./ z0 W# A! D- _* l# Y& z$ Y4 L
“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”$ i& g- b/ S+ M( \
Sohi said he would prefer convicted terrorist stay within the reach of Canadian law.
, @" ^" S* J1 S$ m“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”
) a' [: I% T. f1 tNDP candidate Jasvir Deol said the bill has many immigrant communities worried.
5 e2 K. o) `" V0 M“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.
