谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

% H. t# G& [6 Q! J4 v在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
" Q. f, N6 c7 ?3 w3 g) C之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。" a  o3 e, T4 M' A- E4 l. c$ a
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
% R$ M3 A2 V5 e3 i5 d) X4 ?6 V( b& ~: M
(1) empty suit:* s2 ?- D  g. p
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
! F; p: j8 Y; W1 O* h(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)2 Y. s9 a( g+ R' i  ^& S, |4 g
例如:
1 i9 m# \0 Q/ qAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
* ]9 {+ x, @* G" g(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)0 Z" F" [- o2 |! P. B* }5 O
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.( w- i6 }5 b/ [+ A
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
, y& G# W: e- S虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:, T7 T: ~* Y/ E/ ?, G7 z: y7 W
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.0 l- G, \! T) h/ ?; c) o( T
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)& Z7 q" a& Z- g9 m' Z& q
(2) fair-haired boy:
& B  x- T( }6 n8 G6 k& ?指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)) `/ m$ `* E5 ]& o$ o/ v
(通常用单数,当名词用). o9 F+ z1 x0 F
例如:  E" F( w( V! _5 [" m9 f
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.( D4 ?3 r8 x/ l$ o
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
6 P' }- ~# l% O- e1 CNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions./ e2 Z4 ~# K- S
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
/ y( S% _; E; D有时也可用复数:
3 R6 \3 q0 ?- T' H8 B3 N) b0 \# N. g4 ZMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.& @0 p! j4 Q3 {
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)) }3 L# R5 i8 J& U7 i6 w
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
4 y4 T  C2 v6 [1 C- e4 s/ u+ @(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
2 V; `! m1 j* |; A+ @(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
& c( p* N4 j1 _6 ]2 l3 i# i' o  t(3) fishing expedition:
, H6 \3 ^* Q- q; u2 I为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
5 h$ k0 Y( c5 D% v(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
& d( Z9 v& M! a例如:
# ?9 S$ _5 C- ?+ A3 nThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
" s2 _8 x. [# n1 N/ G1 }  }3 Z(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)0 C5 [5 G2 u7 A7 B
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
2 p- @6 z6 a" b(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)& T- ]  [! T! W- c; o4 ^2 r
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)3 G' H. R" T, u: ~5 z3 o/ x
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.2 j2 E$ i  K5 [' v1 p
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
5 l  R: K- P1 h: K1 K- P$ D偶尔也有人用复数:
* a# n- s% u) C9 {7 [/ iSeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
' _/ [+ `8 `- e) F: G(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)# u( Q1 m% j3 D# a6 D
(4) filthy rich:
( {1 S: W* x+ J# e0 s9 a; y2 {8 F* o  Z意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)6 d4 j" D; t5 j8 R  D# {
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)  u- Z1 G7 J) \+ r0 x) ^( a
多半当形容词用。例如:9 {, g, T6 S( O4 G
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.  g/ \6 M+ S1 l+ W. b
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
6 A, K4 l; {$ KDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.% d, f) J9 j9 u7 t
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)# \$ k4 E+ Z" p
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.& J3 B& K. S- C" f! S% S
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)5 D3 y0 n5 N$ B1 [* ?# k6 _, I
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.7 E& F1 i/ w8 L. Y
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)
3 I4 g2 ]; n# ~3 y* D* j0 y- T(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
" i) t2 s6 @  `' Z; P(5) fairy godmother:
0 ~2 o2 x' ]( U3 Z9 X! n9 Y4 R指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)+ @9 r& B5 \- V
(多半指有钱的女人)! q* ^! G6 y9 a: t/ ?  F; b2 E- T- y
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
+ ^6 O# Z. ?( B: w7 C7 f, uMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.+ x$ t' I( F9 `1 {  s9 S% y
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)- _6 P, i2 d8 h& k+ i! l% D* W
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.8 i0 K4 I0 D  H; ^4 Y  j0 O8 ^3 q+ V
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
- l( |5 w; y( K& A$ s8 c有时也用复数:
5 l( N- p3 g8 R1 l! C% LOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.
: I8 e6 L1 r2 i0 b9 [# O(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
1 S. b" Z7 ^9 e# u- mIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.- Y# {0 ?& w% T; P0 r3 n; r
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)5 o2 J: k% |; Q! A" i1 {5 z
# ~7 F  ]1 V; w7 \; X

1 H1 l9 m. {5 [) r7 H, W, G; a6)eye opener:
+ ]. \. f# |; w6 n指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)
+ p& J9 U& \, [1 l9 g(当名词用;通常只用单数)
9 a  g$ l) b9 s+ U+ [& w' S例如:
: X, b4 d5 o% _0 v# FYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
% |  w# T  N" r4 Y(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
6 A1 T9 J4 X8 O; U& y2 [2 eMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener., @" w$ ?0 b3 O: v% z5 ~- H
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
& |. ?& [6 p  i' j. _The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
( x+ ?8 O& d% k2 q! z9 t5 m+ y8 V(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)  _& q) h/ O$ T) K
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.
% Z. ]1 t3 B" ^, j# N9 ^# C(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
8 X- ^7 _* r& E; w5 U(7) hot dog:
; \9 X* g' M* {# z9 t* q指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用); e1 u/ k0 d2 C  \0 y* |. e+ \" n
例如:) \/ G% ^. p6 J  ~- V  I7 O% Y" ~
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
+ E2 t4 z, {' J, g- ~(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
& F9 x  G6 k6 M- I. M3 Y(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)% O8 Q/ E* X& V6 O% l- r! G3 ]1 E
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.7 Q5 a  b$ K5 F, W1 p! J- a
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
* P7 g2 O9 T& v; B(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)6 r' I1 G, I* ?. c) [
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
4 l1 o& P2 q  H( v8 q(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)' t$ J" p8 ?0 F: j
也指真正的热狗食物:+ f3 P8 m; ^3 Y
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
. ~( ]  W' G4 a4 e" `+ }(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
% _5 a& K7 Y4 `& k) g; i+ ]也可表达欣赏的心情:+ F: `" w6 _- A& D3 m  v3 j5 W
Hot dog ! What great news for me.
1 l; W5 `- J" y+ w+ J7 B& Q/ E; T5 X(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)9 T; b/ w# ]3 N% j3 J
(8)eager beaver:: z( D9 ?# v9 ?# j
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
0 F) h) e6 c8 ?( z* r! ^6 F(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)6 @4 n9 ?; c& A4 V( Q
(当名词用,可指男女): ~- u* i( x: d2 z* B4 h% N4 e4 }. X
例如:+ ^7 m& ~5 m' @1 X
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
0 g/ \- [- P: q6 t1 x; L' f" \(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)1 p; u! Y) [" m, J/ z* J
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.5 U+ r- C/ Z5 }
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
# X; v, H2 I& a4 gDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
% K  E8 ~' L* }  m/ i$ r9 b3 m(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
2 K7 q" l6 D% s9 C/ u# B8 C1 J: sYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
# {$ F9 ?0 j: I6 }1 C(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)  r9 N6 }& v! |
(9)doubting Thomas:
, l% h  h/ Z9 G& W这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)9 Q9 b  r* f/ z; u
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
4 i9 C! s2 m; O+ k(当名词用)) q. d7 V7 L2 P8 l# Y+ u4 l
例如:
3 u' Q0 _: z: ~I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.* I% M: E- n5 y0 i
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
3 k# D; z. I& P: M1 OThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
6 A! B; O+ p" h/ z" i1 T(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)! f! z0 A$ O) M. [3 w& ^
也可用复数:
9 d# f( [2 n0 j. j8 Z7 v4 `- EMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
, j1 F$ W4 _6 ^& g$ D(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)6 d- s6 E& l/ {
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.- u. ~! ?0 c! G% W! j( U& z
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
$ Z: l  |8 P' g(10)dragon lady:
! I3 }9 P* p4 P指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)$ n7 o) y3 E/ [1 ~; y
例如:
: k+ p+ j7 K; z" L5 Z7 \The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
5 L4 |& A) F+ G- d9 T: g(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)* G) B( ^' n1 ~* H1 s/ x  `
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady." k4 V9 a, c8 Y
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)7 F+ a. X' t: H# F. `& P" a
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
: A* K6 E9 \, x4 U(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)3 F3 P5 ]* g+ y
也可用复数:* Z1 [. h8 Q8 R" o
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.$ |3 P( _# a# l* S: Z
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)5 h0 a& ~. F: g8 w7 j* k" C
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
