谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语" \0 w- K2 s7 m+ w

5 X3 f7 e  r1 i9 I$ [) ~
5 X5 @. F  C: U/ B# t在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
+ x7 N  X2 v, `. j4 N7 b. J. J之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。2 u- H  q: b1 j* s5 C
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!

4 C( f; N& M5 B" Y. w% L(1) empty suit:
: C9 J  [- ~% J6 w# u指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。" c+ {7 c5 l# G# e6 \
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
  n: y( a/ m2 Q, `6 G例如:: p) e# P% Z; b- F
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.! z& U5 n  \4 W4 q1 F) G1 ~
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)% j9 P* Z2 h6 @9 o. f1 z. u
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.8 ~  O6 @8 H; ]' Y
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)! q/ r7 Q  L: n  Y* j' O' g
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:0 v. u1 O( y2 ?% D# M
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.5 A0 g' ~) ?0 ~9 |
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)( n7 P1 [' ?1 }+ `/ n; @+ g
(2) fair-haired boy:
8 e. e% T2 M# k- z6 ~. ?$ e2 _指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)4 B, A$ g1 s8 B+ z
(通常用单数,当名词用)
( ]0 B$ v# P) T7 @, K例如:, H4 s7 k6 m# n. |# g7 N$ [
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
1 Z, k6 s0 c$ [* Z* d( j+ S" @* [( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)4 t, Z, x% B$ [# F3 C3 {
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.: K2 @$ Q2 g: {* ]' Q
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。), v: ^( b: L- `- \  \: s# O; L. v
有时也可用复数:
% |* \% B. S( |/ ~5 i; B2 WMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.  }$ J& j) R6 ?1 _
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)2 k- C( F8 N' L: i" K/ [
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.6 K' `; I- c# d2 c' B. e8 N. d" g- o" P4 Z
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)+ }3 P& p6 o/ k- t9 I! }6 s
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法); L$ V  }* Q7 r
(3) fishing expedition:
1 @2 T$ D- c* w3 k. C为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)7 m* e* ?0 h$ Q: R
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)! p, a. \6 f9 }! `" {/ x$ v
例如:
( w- T" Y5 L- I6 v- B+ X7 M4 |The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.9 J6 ]: O; z, [  v! P1 T2 a
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)) R/ Z  M7 j2 c5 V. y, B/ L
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
* s# |2 N) q' L/ {5 Q; _9 V" ^(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)! v% l0 _% f/ o) |) ~9 b& B& ~# s
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict), j' P/ g2 l- W) V
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.0 g9 E- Z) F% ^9 n3 Q
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)4 P- q7 S/ g8 R" _' I3 @: G9 R
偶尔也有人用复数:
) j2 t) |2 O8 I5 l4 @( USeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
- ^* S5 s5 ~; l6 r(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
5 g9 [3 }( _' b4 j  G(4) filthy rich:3 d( q+ }8 z0 a2 H. ^" m  X3 G
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
% ]+ n% J' U, m(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)* }6 i+ h$ X! q8 i
多半当形容词用。例如:) z& J2 c6 S& D, M7 X  H7 m
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
6 h8 ~# ?& l# q- [( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
$ ~$ f+ s& ]8 M' p- p6 {; W- ~: @* jDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
/ U' |0 N3 }/ v(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
/ Y- s6 F3 W9 P* k% p. k5 K' sA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
) m  W( H8 j* N(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
3 O/ ~. I% o# y; {Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
: J& ]$ n6 l7 k3 h" v9 }3 x(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。); b4 C/ I# |$ u, M, p
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法), q. T4 ~8 I% N. x6 _# `" U  ^
(5) fairy godmother:" e( w$ C9 D5 m
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance), ]. ?/ Y; D3 g) U* x0 c& M
(多半指有钱的女人)
1 j' d8 b  F& N- N(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:/ I* g6 k% M9 {7 c8 \2 P
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.* }/ \" g4 u7 y3 J
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
/ t/ X7 X, H7 UAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
* B6 x4 P( s6 ]% T8 I(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
$ x4 B- T# m, T$ N( c0 k有时也用复数:
5 u& @* N9 \" w% P! o* X0 lOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.
0 H+ I4 Q; Q7 O% }  k9 Z(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
) ?! Q% i6 l7 o8 ^In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
+ m. I2 }8 J" u6 w(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)

; u7 ~. ^! ~7 y2 x* y
7 U' j1 d/ B. \, o$ F6)eye opener:; ^$ @9 ?( I: |8 \% R
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)" B6 a# `* c# f/ v- O& n" `
(当名词用;通常只用单数)& \5 _- U0 p  \" i2 P
例如:
/ `, g  F- t8 s  t* {+ @) HYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
! ~  b, C7 T. O# l(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
. d; w& w6 H$ V2 G; ~+ C  |Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.' S4 J2 F( [8 d3 j
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)8 O7 B7 Z3 Z8 P& [
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
; a, k! d0 U! m1 D7 Z- m2 C(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
7 j& s& o' H3 b" D$ U, V# pSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.; z# o+ _) z! g
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)% @( R" G9 a7 y
(7) hot dog:
: W6 ^& w" Q4 A$ i  L6 V- e指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
4 \3 J4 m) V1 _% {例如:
. v' e- ]. C1 G8 T2 kSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
. d' z+ `* ?1 n: l( j(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)0 l' B8 _0 T- h5 q$ {
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
8 T0 e" v0 ^  V8 J. I. n& n& ]4 O. `In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
! i; I  g4 J  u4 j5 J(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)! t2 i) E9 F6 O/ r1 Z; A
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)  \7 X4 @' e4 f3 v5 |9 |6 q
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.* P. F! J# n% J$ }
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)
& ]4 e: d& k$ s8 k5 Y2 k7 w也指真正的热狗食物:7 O4 g& F2 s' J! X+ `
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
% y& S& u* {# N' R! |# a7 ^) H(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)

(8)eager beaver:
; R" ]( p% s# U! N, B4 m' Q指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)+ z/ i1 K' I3 |+ s- a  a
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
: W  K2 E3 \5 G(当名词用,可指男女)
# ~' o* S7 O2 d( {6 r例如:
8 c$ D; \  m: BJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.8 u) p/ b7 A* C+ F- u
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。); N2 ~5 `5 E, C* a; e7 i. A
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.8 C* `; A/ ?* @! R( q
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)% |. f% Q, c4 A) T
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?0 `+ V( m# X& ]% B
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
% z5 `) q& ~" W* U) h3 g" zYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.. W( i/ m, n' Y9 J1 U
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。). s& F# X- `! G! Q$ N" _
(9)doubting Thomas:: R# i' s8 v1 x' d# u4 R
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)6 V) L, C' `7 \' \2 d4 E' D; p
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)3 i( e0 U8 I+ g) t$ o
(当名词用)
, C# Q* p9 }1 W3 L' V/ G例如:% e, g" F+ g6 s7 y) I! Z8 J
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
1 w' [4 G( E/ r" e. G+ v  {(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
: r0 G1 L, ]6 N& Y4 MThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
4 T9 C3 T+ |& ~( q0 L2 D7 v(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。), h% B4 H3 u7 p( H! C- t* C
也可用复数:! T3 H3 n2 s& c
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.  v1 g# ]; `% \: @/ }% g% M
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
9 v4 E- }+ a% ]; g" w0 g& PIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
/ U+ ]( q4 c7 ~# T(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
2 D' s# S8 b* u$ O% ]* J(10)dragon lady:
+ |4 D9 }' M4 ^7 |指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
5 s+ e: B* K& J' C0 i例如:" s' w4 y/ o; I9 \
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
9 w4 N( b0 h. s( z6 m# z(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
3 s3 c  j6 A5 |5 Y- W) SI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.: j  T5 b, h2 d4 d9 d) H
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
& c7 M( s0 g  ?Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?8 x2 t( f! g9 S2 @
(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)
