am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
6 [4 v% s0 v# [9 Q1 \2 r9 tconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and6 h0 P& p b( N; `1 M, ^% `9 Q1 R' m
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them( s# f- o. ^7 Y$ P
will acquire language earlier and faster.) P) A- h7 p" \: }! F8 E0 b
' _" c" H" U3 cIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately+ ?6 F) r; m1 Y3 `# O m
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop$ J8 N: ^. ~3 k* W/ [) b7 m) a
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
% M; V9 ~: g+ p" Ssimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
8 n* Y; n+ \# U, mmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your. l6 T( B. i# |1 E1 R, f* }
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used., ^' w" O. M% X! H
7 F% F; K! C/ o' R( \5 PAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
- a% k$ G: ]3 q" v" [/ ]- z! T4 {" Ibehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
! A8 S! ?+ [8 g( @+ q1 Zthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

# d$ x# R! N, H w1 ^- NStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously& S" ~7 N$ s1 u0 G( j( S
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby: `# t0 j! L+ W, K$ T; m0 I
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
, \( \$ c/ Z0 p, `. D; d( dthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.( w& s& }; U* a3 T
; L" h6 t! w/ z/ |6 N& }& `& L5 R
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
* e9 d* f* u3 m; Rthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.' g6 w/ p% a0 F& M. f
: M$ a% I) ]9 k! H% N3 f6 bThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done$ r" }+ n. m& m5 h' d
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she& h R" O* l# {" X$ o" _) f
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
( {/ q9 H+ _8 ~: o3 [" J& \take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
, x4 `# @. o) \9 D" F# a V* }3 Y7 @" qare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show/ ]* F7 @3 n% h- p
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
8 I1 @2 k& d( j; Ain the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and; W7 J2 f5 ?$ V" x2 J
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
; p9 ^9 {/ H2 m1 o$ Hand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
3 [, u) v0 w3 f6 g: k# bHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific5 {; I. F# T6 j( d
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
