am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
k* W" X) n3 ?4 j$ @concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and0 }9 {" W, p8 j* H; N# W6 |; W: p
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
3 F$ l& i; f- l# U1 B: kwill acquire language earlier and faster.
W* `( P8 v, {/ S
4 Z6 b$ l4 z5 g. r* F* h8 x0 gIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
/ s/ [7 i+ q' G/ G& |30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop- s" ?- I2 L! R- T4 c& [; P
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
: R" N* c% l- i" x; s: A" n6 M& \simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
) f! E0 W' D& Q# a2 W7 Hmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your5 H* m S8 g* z, a' V* ?3 p% a) u1 n" S
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
: L, K( D$ C' F% u' A# c) ], `5 D. L% n/ h$ {$ m7 a
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
) T1 ?9 N. a5 E, O+ \5 xbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and/ h* g& `2 s; L& L+ O
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
# T t7 c k0 U4 w1 a( m7 p2 z# P0 t
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously9 K, @7 g7 r7 h) m% H7 @
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' N, W! `7 d" S$ c( t! t0 Y
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to* s8 i3 @! x6 P! z- Z7 R
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.9 m1 q5 R Q g& N# u
9 u. Q; k/ k2 s9 h- u; IFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,$ m$ K- }$ m. l! B9 {) ^
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.( F) y7 Z3 N# M& y' _- h8 H9 r8 V
+ m5 i. a$ V8 Y& |The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
8 g P0 R5 q! Wover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
4 _& I- n: B L$ z3 T }; p% K4 ]is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will2 C' @0 d* V5 J! }
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate# }8 f3 h( z6 M/ w& |
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
; } ^3 I5 X3 m9 p4 DAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data+ s/ s! n& A$ i; s3 A
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show2 W1 G3 @* n" l
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used8 L6 a# M# p ?( Z
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
6 @' }- \' J7 B" g: @6 ]; i+ udestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,# f T' ]1 R3 e: G' w; i
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of6 \/ ~3 g1 F7 b/ a9 F; O
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
4 Q5 @2 z1 C4 Vjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child: l1 o8 n. b% i8 h" g, z
and the parents participating in this study.
