Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall! f2 C6 e( H0 y2 s3 W0 n
not do any of the following:
' |* A; l5 O8 Y: x0 d3 U2 u(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
3 T8 `% g! ` @8 F! A0 }vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;% `0 P8 u' M6 _% M& J; T' H
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor! E& r. K7 v- r! O) u
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 V: U) n+ Z, l5 ?9 i6 a4 ^
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
9 s: c. @9 l- u1 upermit another person: \3 t4 x; P# g6 T+ W0 Z2 d
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
2 V' x/ H" C4 i7 t" G% r1 C(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,! H+ z) C& ^0 G3 J1 K: t
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! m5 H+ W( O, j {# F(d) give or lend a financial
/ {# }5 x/ o- g; ?& H. a! k7 Q( `responsibility card or a copy of it
: h* o6 N- C, p+ u4 Y. R/ nto a person not entitled to have that financial
+ Z; Y' o' H) A! Q: F% \- k/ Eresponsibility card or copy.
- ?9 M; `: o; B, n% y(1.1)' A* Y! |) y6 n
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
1 b0 x5 x( }. J: s s! e. Fwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
8 }* u4 N. F% J2 z- |) {the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
8 q, z. P2 Y/ |* r(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
+ n0 @8 G, Y- o. F& i9 ^6 `1 i" Enot an insured motor vehicle.

' S3 Q3 X! m7 V6 a& b0 ^2 N6 oIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
: m8 O; Y9 q: m* L3 ?Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a5 r$ J/ a, w1 T
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the a& F% r0 u3 L0 i+ _
Insurance Act
. M! J) }' H. |/ J U7 Bby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy- }+ z; g5 f8 y; ?3 t: Z: ?7 T. D
outside Alberta.6 n; E0 e. p8 N# g7 g2 f/ H4 z

6 z+ W. u* O# @A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection' d( |* C {6 c4 z
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
2 Z* E; s1 I. c(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
S1 ^; x4 c0 q0 c0 land not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to: S; W5 A- X7 q2 g; a6 |, ?
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
& M" o! _, n- V- q- |4 M* Mmore than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
