One of the founders of the company is Min H. Kao. Chinese name 高民 （环）. Thus Dr. Gao just used his name as the brand name of his newly invented GPS in 1989. & f- J! d. X4 n# B2 ?# G# V

Kao from a defense contractor Magnavox while working for the former King Radio.[3] The pair founded Garmin in 1989 in Lenexa, Kansas[citation needed] as ProNav.
