Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

* u7 a' h6 U4 q- Y( ?* JSeveral reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. & Y3 K! `9 m9 d' p4 j, g
! l( V- |( c* j ]It has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”+ |: R( u3 f: q) N1 X2 r5 T
4 s$ s6 r' e. B“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” 6 |' V2 j9 s6 P! Q( O
& c& D, T$ [' v) K! K0 B
Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. 1 }3 E, u3 `4 R' v
) K) X2 @9 ?; e) j0 H; W2 u6 ~If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
! G9 ]7 t% L% S/ y6 ^7 F0 |# _ N+ S
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
( {; B$ o" |5 i•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY. " D2 e7 p3 ]# B* i
•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
4 K# P, k6 c" p•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
* G! T2 C: v& ?The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. ; g! s* Y0 b( ~7 Y4 y% L
; T& L% u- k% L# N* x+ C
To protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. . W' _2 H0 o1 _" W, ]; o: }# ?( V! `
