One day, when I was a freshman in high school, v; C- W1 a0 r0 F/ @) x( ~
* o4 Z. t1 |3 E, ~$ V9 MI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.& u' { |( ^7 l$ V8 x) e

His name was Kyle.4 q0 T0 p1 G& R

It looked like he was carrying all of his: H* o# k2 ]) _& ?; X2 v( ?* P
Books.. A0 @3 c/ J9 L1 z$ d! e9 @& b
- A, I/ L, z4 H" } c1 U
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

He must really be a nerd."6 R5 `5 p" B2 O) N% Z4 U2 z( M
2 _1 r: G2 C6 T" k+ @ f1 s5 j& s! B
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

$ |4 V2 s, l: `# lAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
: _- ~0 F) g4 H% V: Q" I3 J9 l# f- c" n
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.: N9 U3 ^1 ^) Q, X( z
( o3 R+ o& m" J) |- w
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
& [. d" P. y, V" A0 a Z+ r8 Q8 e. P X; Q# w3 i/ H( B- b r- h- d
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes$ H b' r" |1 E- q/ f$ S
- ^+ O$ M! X$ t3 K4 Z& ~* x
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.. p" \+ x; F) Z9 U) o
; y! J- o4 G# p7 u: x# P; {& n
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
+ G, R l9 Z. K8 p( S+ s+ J. l8 g* F8 s- X4 w
They really should get lives.
& P9 ^. y1 U; E1 h( h1 l: Z, d; B- J* x& r# X
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"4 _5 s! n9 b7 A
6 d" J9 Q6 Z! U: b: v/ d7 y( a7 tThere was a big smile on his face.
$ ^% Z% L0 l( W: c$ M: x4 z+ }, p- }3 L8 ~' i
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.; V7 y4 l. ~$ m" S7 P* p5 p

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

8 K1 i+ ] @9 m7 b8 ]# M3 qAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.8 ]) W+ \/ E' j2 ^$ B6 h
6 q+ ^7 [9 A6 K. [; N7 d$ hHe said he had gone to private school before now.

& Z8 t/ P8 a- E1 z# H6 S$ V; k. zI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
& R" a2 b; _8 D" w( s. ]/ H1 M- q- A3 s: s0 I/ M, l! f6 D8 x( S7 h
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.- \: g1 i4 g" w% b

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.3 X2 r, |1 B; C; m3 ~

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.

( p0 |0 y( e4 [ X2 x4 WWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!2 f+ {$ l( B8 N% k' C% s' f

" He just laughed and handed me half the books., T& d1 _ v2 ?% |" }
; F/ O+ W$ K4 x( o
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

When we were seniors, we began to think0 O) T7 E: F1 j ]
About college.

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

: Z9 v' L8 {8 ^8 |# `; @I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.. J$ P P" h8 W8 A

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship., `$ W3 _% ~' r! @# ?8 `
( W4 P) a& y! J7 f$ d7 {Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

He had to prepare a speech for graduation.5 s7 t) F8 f8 Y x& R( h6 B3 x( j Y! l
, u$ ^- j: `& W. K- ^7 L% N0 GI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.

He looked great.

' V: ?/ j2 T% n7 `& aHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.

7 R1 j1 r$ m+ ~' dHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

Boy, sometimes I was jealous.

Today was one of those days.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"% i8 V. `3 a% o
0 v9 G% d4 |% {" ?' o7 RHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.' O! L, \& U: g2 d

"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

"Thankfully, I was saved.

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.7 ?7 p O2 Z/ p9 g

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.7 M* o$ R5 f6 u2 e
; L o. y6 g5 c+ B) |Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions.

With one small gesture you can change a person's life.

For better or for worse.

As you can see, I took choice number 1.
