You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,2 q: z5 i* E" r- q( P* Q
; g+ ]# Y6 B1 o2 q" q  Y  z
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.9 E1 \# X0 A% K: ?( Y
9 p# V: A: x" U' z, R6 L4 ~
His name was Kyle., \( k4 J1 m" N5 i# m5 |5 H
) o. B& J3 o: `( c. O) [) n
It looked like he was carrying all of his& w+ ^* E; O* [; z! ~0 l9 \3 ^; o
Books.( K, W3 k5 ]  J  w
6 n5 V) L. _' L3 c8 P
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?' V2 J: x6 Y- i
% d& h5 b: j: B/ P2 C# b; p
He must really be a nerd."
$ P5 s$ @: N. z7 `6 d- E* l" u3 x: A. ^. U
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
1 u. |6 t0 ]2 u" s0 k: H9 {4 t, M8 Q8 ?$ k  c
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.9 {- ?) W' m6 H! D$ Y3 `
5 z: X" W) A( G: l
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
: m/ J" N% }8 ?( `; B& |' d& R& L' F
0 j3 E. e( `, I9 l' m1 pHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him./ V( D5 H3 U& k. z
5 P; G" u5 R0 f* K) }$ V
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
- O  s! M: Y2 u) S/ s: a5 @! X  u
  c- k, m4 ?! jMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.( s. N: p; c0 r" I- i
& x) A  A4 t' C" t! j8 A
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.' }- u9 _. v* q, W  ]
* @% L8 z. O! k. Z9 ^9 J
They really should get lives.0 y: o3 g6 c3 F/ @  ]! I% Q7 J
3 Y; U9 Z' o% G7 w7 P) e' P
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"' @' E. e' b$ G0 z
  S/ o0 s; n0 t  j1 E7 z
There was a big smile on his face.- V0 o. Z* D3 ?- C, T

; }! M; N' x. B! J" |It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.& ?/ o+ F% K1 Q. j6 G
+ x( X& W8 H; X, X
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
* y- i& \+ \5 [% P5 ?4 T7 E0 g
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
: K( P* E. y# a  {) w9 v! `% P1 m( }5 V3 g4 s  E
He said he had gone to private school before now.; T( Z' s  j7 E" ]  R

; f4 l! t0 a( f2 d- E9 F% p9 KI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

: {! z. L" k5 r. fWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.3 V8 w# k; ]) Z8 B- H! X

& P6 k1 k7 J/ ?5 A7 p& O8 M; DHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

* n1 x- F+ H1 t1 M. E) LI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.- D6 i. l& m4 N$ h2 s/ Y! _. |8 z

/ |8 C% N  x  t$ E8 ^- E5 |, G6 r# IHe said yes.# H1 M; I1 E8 d: V+ q5 {

4 l: g8 q0 o6 p6 y: JWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
: w/ m) N& q% w# @3 K1 g( ?! j% J4 ]& G3 A+ G7 l+ Z
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.% p+ y) [* A- s3 ?
% k, Z; K) {# E1 e
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!3 L; `  \4 U  b- G, c% m
% {/ ^, G0 u' M; m6 X$ ?) ^
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.# Z" J% ^6 N- c1 A- @

+ P; T; v0 i* f6 `) fOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.& ]  F- S% X' i8 z- v
) z: ]4 _* e% j( v* I( j! m& H
When we were seniors, we began to think& r$ e& h) Y7 Q' Y6 I7 X
About college.
+ i) L3 y" i) G: W% U
, V7 _8 g# D7 u1 @1 }) tKyle decided on Georgetown, and I! A/ k8 X  Q* j1 `$ V+ K. o
Was going to Duke.
# ]% w" E9 @5 D. x) @8 L$ n; K$ m# G' c7 X" J
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
& \/ X1 u$ _: M0 s, Q( s4 o! Z8 o9 K: m: T! `5 x. \
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.4 r5 N2 ?% b+ ?; H. ], |1 T% C

9 H, K3 ]8 B3 Y* tKyle was valedictorian of our class.
6 O+ ]8 C( O1 |) Z6 c
0 S7 Z& L" a& }, X1 VI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
7 U7 x) F$ C4 _1 i/ X- Q: |. {& `
0 K. ~! T  P  j' UHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
# X( I, T" a5 l' ]" B( w) h+ q4 f8 F, g6 S. Y5 x* C
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
2 q3 s  A. u& u% c- R  f
- M! D2 w/ g$ p# n- JGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
3 ~% c0 c: A7 |; p, H, F# X6 F1 B0 T7 `+ o8 ^; f- n0 F6 a
He looked great.
+ i8 n$ c+ M0 Q) y$ c8 \0 s$ S( o- W6 s' G' i" Z
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school./ C& g6 p& F; ?
" r1 c5 i. @$ a3 R
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.5 s% `0 a; y  N0 M6 N5 u! }9 l7 k
( n( {- b5 m5 }; G
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.9 @# ~$ ~/ U9 }& A5 v

" ?4 {3 M" p, uBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
3 m( w0 ~( `3 M6 l% i, o+ ], D
9 E* E5 n( ~; ~% N# J) zToday was one of those days.' M& O2 v& {6 G) T
+ w( F1 V( o1 K4 I
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
3 ^) t' T8 r/ ?8 b6 C* C- N. F# @
( C- r" w, T' y, J: R$ r, q( W0 WSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
+ I  S; j. C5 ~
9 n( r9 |4 m7 x% n" u  `He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.  i% r3 r4 `, a
6 H8 O: N, O/ i9 I9 a' V
"Thanks," he said.8 p# b* {" N$ f) a$ r
- k- J8 ?; J( j# _6 w
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
4 [9 n& Q  |: Q' f: b+ X  \- H5 E& q- r1 |/ J7 B8 Y5 Z
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.5 e, J. _. }) n) s

" l% \: K( \9 ], hYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...6 U3 M/ d% ^* f! y' ~

2 V$ j6 p5 ?9 \, UI am here to tell all of you that being a
% m# C6 F1 {& G5 t/ G$ ?, GFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
% h+ l( A9 I1 l8 Z$ y5 q0 u$ ~3 S6 ?+ \' z  W
I am going to tell you a story."
# t2 I+ f, V4 D/ u; J( t4 G3 y  n$ ~
4 J  Z) q; l  ^( X) Y5 aI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.3 B' k+ ^& q# U! Z2 `' G

% Q1 X% h. `0 }+ e3 }7 l7 oHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.: S( g$ r4 O8 B) L) b( J4 [
, S; M9 \; D4 w
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
- K1 C5 f( R* n
9 B* m5 b5 h( i( G; m7 ~! jHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.5 ~% a; w5 E1 V; J) K
* S& ]6 x- D( ]
"Thankfully, I was saved.
3 \' n3 q6 K+ u/ E, W0 Z
! i7 g* g/ J( d! z6 y: d& X4 t# _+ ZMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
8 F- L6 M7 p5 l4 e# r+ h. u: }) V& r% Z6 d# a
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
7 `* O! l  F  K) F8 r3 Y
* ?+ i4 }4 t) M8 v. DI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
1 a5 M2 Y2 C' {& s1 u( r" p$ K  j; o
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.1 Z9 w: U3 n. k2 H
4 e: u/ t2 N! o! M
Never underestimate the power of your actions.: F2 P; d/ x# n5 |' }

8 T0 @0 \# B# N1 ~' PWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
" h1 {  F2 z" i. I% y3 _$ Z2 i5 P- _) L5 c$ F. h0 @( n
For better or for worse.
  i" h! l  i5 y' `- @' k/ q2 r7 ?( M# g9 w4 ?
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way." s6 n* ^2 j8 p4 C. I, f1 M' E

2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

4 ~: S' t% T/ x  S7 L( g& N* `As you can see, I took choice number 1.. f  y9 S+ t0 ]* x
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.6 ^: V, u7 D; g- s$ J+ k

Tomorrow is mystery.

Today is a gift./ i: b( f7 k, l/ ?, U+ k' a2 L. P
