You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
9 K6 X  g1 [3 h
( t. [) b5 G4 v4 q4 L: [% T0 NI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
1 u# j1 N1 @. e1 }3 n# X( _! n( h' R( x- ]2 }. r5 J: R
His name was Kyle.
' J& {; Q' B  [) B$ K( Y: l" `
; F3 d( T) Z5 Q& @It looked like he was carrying all of his
) i2 v$ w: |9 v5 j/ Y* cBooks.# L+ K$ [2 i& a# l) V

8 t/ x0 d! J4 @$ U$ y6 z* ]I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?7 W2 U: E5 A6 }" c9 O" z$ q6 x

% h) l# Z* M( ~4 ^; aHe must really be a nerd."
" [# w& Q5 w+ r! [. I+ ~9 }. o4 g% H' s0 u
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.+ J: ~  }3 o- M. [( ?4 L
, n3 g) m0 [3 X; @
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.5 @# p) b( V' V: a+ Y/ v6 }) s

( U" c. o8 o5 ^4 C( TThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  R4 c! b# v# w3 ?' T' c
8 F+ a; _( _7 X% k5 S( A! D
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
; m* k8 B0 _; [9 J1 ^/ t4 }; t! T1 |+ Y& k8 C, X2 n3 Y
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes6 V- z3 w: Y6 u/ v- g* T
) m. }+ [8 B. Z  ^# I! N7 ^* O5 C
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
- a/ Z, F. C$ M/ Q8 K9 O$ L8 U: B( T- ]" Z
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
! e9 Q& ^5 T$ p, u+ |$ r. n+ S$ R$ a* A, h: b  ?
They really should get lives.6 Y) |7 j+ M+ e7 F- S! P6 D/ m

8 p$ I- q9 C& E( o: L, @$ L% |" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"  C! s. S: @/ Q1 C; I+ V
1 W' O: e+ c% ^- f% w& T
There was a big smile on his face.  q$ a; f0 Z( n1 S0 n

4 S! z0 t* e. B# I9 `+ `. q0 YIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
* S  J# y+ D9 h4 A9 @/ w4 o  F0 i
# D! _9 @) a8 X6 m! X; ]7 V0 n* L! UI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.8 \5 P. a- _, f5 X$ g# S9 s; H
! S+ X$ v3 a2 h0 P
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before./ A! i' x- ~7 D+ [6 B1 p) A

: w0 |! w1 H2 u8 ~2 t; C8 g" [He said he had gone to private school before now.
/ \$ m: c1 I2 J1 Z8 d2 u6 E) D/ J/ k& v! t
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.( r; X0 P% ^0 ]0 O7 v* R, [4 n
2 O* D. f. W. y" F6 E) p# Z7 w9 E
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
3 K  v: e- Z* b" Q. [  D. i0 h+ ~! C2 |1 K7 l5 z. \: [; f
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
; C: g& D. t8 j5 Y1 V* y
; ~/ t7 Q; |$ I& }I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
5 ^2 c6 a$ ]8 J: ]) _
: ~7 S  G& D& Z3 p' |( i2 BHe said yes.
% S. [6 H, E1 h% l" T( M  Z
/ T1 n! g" g; K$ QWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.. x& i8 s- _% d, T1 q

# d  `- f! I( fMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.) y1 o0 R9 L8 R* T% q: e5 f

/ f* B# K7 l. [* V$ H3 }  }I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!2 `  n+ ]8 K, K$ C- Y
  q2 p% \( ]# D1 Q
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
2 ]  @$ d* R# q) t% Q5 ^3 f6 O8 V, C" E
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
( c  V3 J" b0 o* K/ ?  s0 \
  C( n5 {% D; K6 jWhen we were seniors, we began to think
* w1 I  Z9 e  ^5 A4 ]1 S! O6 gAbout college.
: T+ U( W1 r4 ^$ M# b% N- G0 B) y1 \0 C( A; M5 [
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I% q8 u, V; S+ N
Was going to Duke.! N) f' l9 T. B: x! {

: J2 I# A- |% L, P& yI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.4 g/ f0 ?3 L) _) h% a4 B6 o

/ `4 c! ^' K/ x. d: I/ q( cHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.! F# W# K) A6 E: ~2 s- z7 J& ~0 q

+ \9 y5 r( b3 ^% G6 L* lKyle was valedictorian of our class.8 U' l5 ~" h# k2 P

  }# g% Z' h- I" _I teased him all the time about being a nerd.( H1 ]/ j, o5 l7 |

$ j4 J& ]% J# N5 ]( zHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
# u! T3 \0 s. J# `! ]1 B) ?1 M$ u0 I
% W3 |/ t% p1 ~* l7 kI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
' f- q& a) i0 E% B9 e" T7 ~* R# `2 P& l& k- a7 V3 ~2 F
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.0 z! \0 v" u2 ^8 Y. B. K/ J
2 Y+ A$ [- t8 k/ E& u
He looked great., h$ r  \& P( e+ {7 Z
5 U: U2 C1 m! }8 A) ~
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.5 `) {% {; c9 W5 }& `+ T
5 ~; v7 K  S% P0 `5 q
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
8 }( s5 ]$ ?2 q: C9 O8 }4 ~, _2 f7 w1 |9 t  y( {' N
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
/ |+ q1 [, C( }: L. c& R+ P" W1 v) z; X9 P+ l6 L
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.4 I# O8 I" ?+ Q( k# d% r
4 [3 L' P; z9 s( D5 u2 w) ~+ E+ W5 c
Today was one of those days.# ]; C" l) c/ C" W1 \

0 [4 R9 q5 G& c8 qI could see that he was nervous about his speech.. Y6 w) ?. x. L

/ p! k0 s' P6 u! f, KSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"2 t/ D/ c" B) R- T
5 o  x# j' Y4 v# d2 T8 m5 Q. c
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

2 ~+ @; [# F# y$ E$ s8 U"Thanks," he said.
1 L7 Y# x: o) ?/ A9 s% r0 N/ m% M4 W: j
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
& F7 `4 ^: a5 k' ^7 e5 d' I$ O4 Q
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
3 _9 ?9 v, h, E0 R8 w" {
4 _# C( c6 C* ]: A" h1 K1 GYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...# a4 [# q0 U, e% r9 ~
8 ]* s4 x2 ^( m( Q" o/ e
I am here to tell all of you that being a
4 n& v# h9 z2 B1 A! C$ X8 gFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
" R0 h( z4 k) Z+ U$ X
) ]; q  e0 z: H3 L- |9 `: bI am going to tell you a story.", Q) ]( q/ t7 u
8 N( H( q8 ]4 ~6 j9 U+ s5 V) b) G( K6 e
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.% l* Y, ^  Q5 A2 Q
6 p4 C' |5 h0 K: U) y
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.5 \; a- `; \+ ?/ Y' j: O& j  G, {
! K1 Y/ j3 q8 U0 V3 _7 _
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.3 V  M. d; z1 R! L' y6 ?3 {

* r; S4 ]$ q& p# tHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.. j6 V- w0 t( L' ~7 \3 C
7 `) N4 a7 `8 t/ B
"Thankfully, I was saved.
# T  M/ ^. v, k# @. a: s
" L/ e! L9 y; p- IMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
# T2 {- a* v! a) ~4 }' i# k0 A3 I% I
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
5 Q; R4 }7 b, c' `7 }: c& F. Q: A* F7 S0 Q; g4 C; v
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.! h# V( Y# f, b, ?3 i* E
0 x/ {0 X" u; s% x* Q
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.* ^5 A4 i  X: L: q/ V* U# p
8 Y: j* |! S: H8 u& q
Never underestimate the power of your actions.) Y4 i! E( O9 o. U& V5 P

& a( j% Z8 [1 W5 K" \- KWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.6 u" ?+ S1 _6 Q1 M% {% }

) [$ s- }! L8 LFor better or for worse.
3 ?) ?/ u- K( L5 N, x1 @/ N5 s- j- R% E% d) s7 Z$ Z3 c0 B2 z
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
/ c6 m8 t  [- h0 h1 m' N( `% b" W: V) N9 g
Look for God in others.( k4 k, A! z" C4 ^  j

) l, r4 L/ V0 r, ~9 [You now have two choices, you can:
0 Y# q# w2 Y" \9 |* C+ J& m9 K- A( `; Z9 O' d
1) Pass this on to your friends or
, J1 A0 m7 d' Q; z: w1 N0 n# n& i+ Y
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
0 @& W' Y( I" \! x. |# K$ u+ }- \
7 l& m4 W* j6 d, _' O# A+ q2 H$ dAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
& W: N  b5 u. Z' \0 b"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."/ h. H  D4 P' `, u
% ^# K% \4 b7 D& E" @
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history." G/ n% B2 `& _9 g! L8 I

# s4 M  ~0 P- ~- Y! ~9 f. p. yTomorrow is mystery.! y; D( _5 g) a7 g' N) V& Y# g; m

- {: H$ i- n6 W* M1 q6 P; F) b$ q' bToday is a gift.7 A2 p5 V/ J# s& Q( m  {. H, Y
