You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,. Q9 y  w1 X! `/ R$ y; G' m; s
* s* z; f: l9 L' J- O  J
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.4 k4 w% Q; h' K8 w: C0 R( Q* @4 t; [

) }; V5 f* w7 d) J# pHis name was Kyle.
, w7 B/ x3 i$ D9 }( X% r' D/ E# b7 }: H" ?# y% U7 I* \4 t
It looked like he was carrying all of his
# p  m# k" z" ?0 q* }& Y* PBooks.
8 F8 N! H$ B( M& Y: g
! m- O/ x) W% @I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?5 V3 M! r7 `8 u6 v4 ~6 F

  \3 h# D- B6 z: C. HHe must really be a nerd."4 E9 t& A# i' ~' P

& b2 E7 q% ?: c2 Y( {, XI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.5 n  m- m0 ^; v! Q4 p& g
2 K8 G% E; h7 G  {7 O, _
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him./ B, B4 ^( m8 P; O
) B7 h- i: C9 Q; Q+ `
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.' W" B9 B; J7 I0 q

% {: Z# Q/ R/ K1 n6 r% D' |His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
) e# |! O0 ]* b' l+ I0 R! `# ^/ Z' ~5 {4 o
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes9 Z& ?% I# P) t! b% y5 ?

# i4 y! P3 t8 K6 u) }' r  K* r% \( OMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
9 ?; S2 V7 W* e# L% y, \! h/ \
1 ?( h3 S% I* IAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
- {, _" V! ^. a
8 O( a( [& C3 e. ~9 `They really should get lives.
5 c9 F; y' T  O+ `( ~" ~* \1 U7 H. t5 t$ ~; ?. o
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
3 \" z. q1 F# H0 G
: `2 R/ J5 x/ n2 s$ qThere was a big smile on his face.
' P( F* K  a8 R' s! e3 i6 V9 O3 ]) [$ n) W8 {' M, B' \
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
# H: D( Z) |& l+ C+ M7 _1 Y" I# Z6 x& W: F" G  v
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
+ @( u& h% N# |' y) Z- Y% c9 C! t' K" t  a
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
' \( O5 b% k' n' A: H
" H- `/ `- x/ O6 U5 I. GHe said he had gone to private school before now.4 b% r+ n+ W! v7 _0 P* b0 l
5 F/ R. o4 h& \
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
& d8 I; J5 W' I! p! P9 I6 U9 K& L* \
7 a3 r+ T: a) c) OWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
2 b3 a+ K4 b, r/ \' `( z* @( K
6 h& Q6 h1 S0 D: z- C& MHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid./ U( r; u. u- _- c' C
3 q& n  K6 g* }+ n# }; Z
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
0 V4 J3 z0 K- ^8 G# u6 c7 t* i+ \( e1 S+ x
He said yes.0 N5 f1 |5 O5 I6 H) G
; y0 l" i& \% k6 z
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.5 i+ o  ~1 V& f! [
" p: ~9 ?2 ]! ~3 ~' S. I
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
) K) U9 O* e, ]6 N4 v& l. F4 K' p+ o/ l( j! z0 c
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" \/ m9 V  F3 c
1 M) e. j% m8 `* Y1 i' e3 U: y; v
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
9 M& H# T; H5 ]. |: }" j5 T0 F& D: j0 z( _: I
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
+ x8 o2 m( [7 B) E$ ?" M" H
- @: a: R: l% t( f  }, m$ hWhen we were seniors, we began to think) v6 m7 p) V/ T: U! a
About college.
8 d5 |4 U7 V) Z3 R6 z, a1 L+ m9 @2 ?/ u- z+ P2 Z# N% i
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I) k2 ?" F! j3 \0 v7 ]8 O( R: E
Was going to Duke.5 ^' z, f- ^) h9 v/ \# c
$ D# D0 X+ |7 j) ?: r, I
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.! f" |" c' c* N9 E! S

7 @+ P" x8 a  E8 F* z5 G% ]$ V/ HHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
/ K! m+ D. G8 l) [4 F0 q; a' j; v% H( `% d+ m& k5 A
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
( U2 I, s9 k9 c$ Y4 q: F
, C% E1 \$ q- e$ ?  C- AI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
; `) |, z3 r6 g- L( H4 N2 Z: i6 L) L" r, `0 N
He had to prepare a speech for graduation." N2 N. G; P8 V- ~8 P
$ J: j: L* p5 s( s$ l7 ?/ N
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak2 t/ D) T  w0 s, w% a" J( [

+ y9 b. F) _6 `% @0 k  h, \' OGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
/ e. T9 g/ B* m" `! ?3 Q: E3 P
( P/ ?5 f) j% A0 e; G2 l1 k  D# \He looked great.
" F( P5 r1 r9 q' x% `) s3 v4 K6 j0 m5 d
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
% Y3 M# `! J" |, ]. N$ W
' h1 p0 x1 t$ i5 I% WHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.7 g- g% E% E7 [4 ~+ X; c4 K

8 Y9 ^2 B3 G2 bHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
: W7 E$ G8 m( Z3 @( j) g8 Z3 W  S. @4 O
/ b  U4 L9 q0 ?1 {8 B- J/ ?: y; VBoy, sometimes I was jealous., t$ W( L* i& t! w8 w- V

2 ?( j' D* X( ~; ~/ J# ], SToday was one of those days.
* Q7 v- x: a8 }, X3 @# x4 e& U% p+ V) ~7 g0 U- \
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
0 ^3 E: z. Z7 A9 }% Z6 b3 B4 Q6 }7 N0 l& J# a
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"3 n& p- w0 `+ B- v9 \* l4 a

, H4 P7 \% ^2 \% eHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
: Y4 w$ ]& u. Z$ e. J; }6 ?2 ?6 W+ ^& x1 {: W' W% m$ a
"Thanks," he said.
+ g0 h8 q; K0 K& d2 }5 I; N# e# `/ z/ Y: b( a9 ?( i5 a% B( F
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
, j( ?3 N2 A' c9 ?
+ h2 a! n6 @9 A"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.* W. J+ M( N6 W% ^. |. x, ?8 C# \- A6 a
7 P% z5 V6 p8 j7 n$ U2 r
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...& ?9 V8 A0 R5 c6 l
! Z' T0 M8 ~# }  b7 n, P  o- e+ B
I am here to tell all of you that being a% W- t2 {; \% d& B0 v
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
* w, j; g7 m+ l( z5 r
5 y- [0 t4 @4 Z' D# `I am going to tell you a story."! [. A: H) m$ w8 ^4 o2 h
* q8 h2 Q3 a4 o# @; N9 z) s
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
( I, g, J5 j! ]4 c; B* D3 X: e& v7 C3 e
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend./ L+ v6 c* e7 J& `
4 l) r7 |4 S8 E( u" b0 ?
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.+ J1 u4 a5 L  }" C( _' v
1 L) c" a, V" z% `. X# v
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
) H" v! r6 P5 X. J
4 G) R! u& I. O# g& w9 s! J"Thankfully, I was saved.. ^9 Q  Z0 v  M* l" Z0 s9 W9 ?
" D2 ?$ a* O5 h1 V7 o
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."5 Z4 c. y9 p( B2 e

1 X( [4 r9 o" g" d9 HI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  f( r/ A4 L" _. ]0 g
4 W  g" H6 q# @( i+ R6 x
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile." C9 {& C! o. P
' u; z8 w. y0 B& F! n
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
( P9 J7 K: q3 ]. n
& x$ c4 f+ K4 |, N5 C5 ENever underestimate the power of your actions.7 Z' ^/ D  H6 `* t0 C: K5 d
  y) Y) O4 Q6 _
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.. ^' Q1 D$ u- I* u) i* a( v

, K& ?7 {1 }$ H: Q$ l9 HFor better or for worse.5 s' c5 r. H" E$ [+ M- M" E. X. j

& [8 A# x# Y8 X" n  V3 Z) ~) fGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.  E' j6 {( H0 R% O+ a. f* v" J0 p
* P& M- ~  d( O8 y+ j
Look for God in others.
6 t7 r# |; w( C4 h6 ~" X8 p: {
' m1 C' G% \. l3 dYou now have two choices, you can:4 k+ g: L. s! q& n- z

& H2 f. G3 D, m1) Pass this on to your friends or; z3 G6 }0 M+ Q3 T

9 C2 }; u  j: Y* I2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.. {) m5 [" _. c, q5 z

As you can see, I took choice number 1.. u' y# z; T6 _& x4 G) R( @
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.9 z9 u) `- ]! R1 L5 E4 f' S
