Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
2 h/ R7 w2 C6 j5 K( Z& d& Z1 q1 ^3 }of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
q/ v1 q, B/ b8 `& K8 i9 M( D' _now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
& d: v+ s0 u' zmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution0 C l2 F& ?" s2 M- W; f
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color" q5 ^4 L& L6 ~' Q) i$ t6 o4 j
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance( y6 }4 a6 D. h2 W
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8005 S7 Y( s1 X3 e+ H" N
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject% }% n/ V3 [/ c6 Y
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
/ w* J7 C |# A! Jwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum7 Q' v8 @# o$ H- j) E
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
& X; M$ g5 V& |) F2 q1 }3 twidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
+ Q- J+ q- \7 F" b/ R- l. hconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
8 h+ {4 H2 \1 x$ ebefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
, R& t: y2 V+ f' H, K$ ~thanks to the D800.
n" B$ B0 g+ }4 ]When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
; L( Y; E# h& n0 i36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
+ ~1 k( E0 Q ~) d; }, |, _* Nrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces% O& f% J5 a- U8 Y; C Q' ?/ r
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a3 o2 m+ V: Y' L, @5 O$ m5 G+ F- b9 l
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as8 w. E. ]" x8 K2 P# P+ `1 [
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before." N P: ]$ n, C5 ~% ~
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor. `( B: B8 I6 ? a l2 C3 B
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is9 u" d i( _+ n& y; S% {9 G8 b
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
% K+ o6 }) } P0 i( Calso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
* a; n: E7 |, x/ K3 s; S5 O% tcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
. {/ b7 G, Y" o F: ^6 @) ]in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality% F: ]3 A6 H# {% A
prints and video.
* ?) l+ R. r! BTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is$ }6 E, [+ I9 t/ W, L0 L
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models" W4 j9 p g* d) y4 H6 N. j7 l
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
E& `5 @4 e% w. `( O$ J& gcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
" {8 O' }8 o$ M3 v3 W" W0 s1 Ssight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws7 \' x2 x' _$ i# W9 F+ N" R
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
/ r! p- y5 K5 @2 T# z- R6 Racuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I; C& H& q. Y% w. R3 x
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as% s) H2 _+ m/ W4 w& l
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse# ?& t Z* X M/ P# Z4 g
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add; W- X6 B; T: g9 r
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
9 z. A& o! M; Y @: [+ U+ QD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express5 ? w' ]7 Y/ f5 K# k
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.7 L0 F1 H3 {; O/ m* U5 f. Q7 o
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
0 o8 J" B& |! t3 ~! ~4 _compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal+ V3 L: h5 G% J' A0 ]1 R. s: t& _
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for/ Q f0 r* _/ f( d# d5 Q' f4 w7 z
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital

now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
% \' r+ E$ t; S& Qand easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior$ H0 C E/ @7 { a- c6 g
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
8 H: O* T- X( S" |architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
5 u6 g' Y1 `7 h1 [1 y \* ^+ fperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
% o& H" k7 [' W9 K" uclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
' [/ A( w, [- P1 kto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
! v7 O/ B& u& rrange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality9 P, f5 _# {5 S0 R
