it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:

' P/ p, J H9 D6 l/ W6 yif you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size. 4 `! O, X* w3 g0 @" \3 @5 C

the cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. & I7 Q$ _7 c3 ~* k9 o
$ S. D3 o9 j/ s, ~5 Y( `: Zthe solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)( b9 Y. * Q- d1 _, w& v7 D! nthe band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band. " U! r& U6 m0 I: U
