Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

5 U, P0 [' U3 V' j3 GDiagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
+ T, v) Z* v- q$ H1 \. M2 K: TProviding daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
' c, M, h6 r/ o6 S' t: IDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
Performing other functions as assigned


Good eye-hand coordination
Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
! Z7 T' \* _9 L: {) Y& {$ NPhysical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
Working shifts, sometimes away from home
Basic technical knowledge of diesel
Welding skills
Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
May need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
