for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians0 {. b& K' j' G
on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear2 B8 g2 t0 ?$ c
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
# s# x U. |4 X' @6 _ Y3 |service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
& }( y4 z- L7 g) R; o# O5 Q; O+ Nan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
- D5 c4 `6 h* g- d1 k" y. G; \. r+ d/ Qinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
( Y$ @8 R P$ q: g: v2 ~- t& ACanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
) P! e& _" Z1 `# _carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
0 t! }7 a1 [/ K8 t8 t* nguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
# x* h/ d1 d/ m) X# d1 pinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
. h* d3 `$ l8 s/ E9 Tmarket forces to prevail. % n+ |' o, M; j9 H9 E# t

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
1 A( Z/ E# [* V7 K2 a& qchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
3 u: ]+ w8 C! }* w) V7 w* s* [9 tnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at/ }. d- u$ o6 T" O+ V5 Z

7 e) P+ v: @& i; lline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
+ A5 a; P" ?) ^; ucompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that3 f5 N2 G) I, ]3 t8 t0 I
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.4 {% L* @5 B* k* v0 x
