" ]7 {5 X# Q0 rThe Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
% E- s5 h4 G* C! J) f9 z/ zRoles and Functions
1 b* S6 k+ m) m ?2 nThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
0 H4 D4 L: \3 }7 m" v: M2 `' worganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
) e0 M2 f; }* T/ @* X5 Ooperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has/ i8 S) ~8 _, ^! E! }7 W
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
- y( j- I; L9 w9 _* Joperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular2 m, d/ ?+ G6 O3 Q
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
* }- P X" r. z' ?5 x; p" econducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
% y6 t! H& `* D! Vemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
( Q* y( }" h) {5 q& Ustaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend" `: p8 c2 K! Q3 t0 `6 V4 z
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.4 O1 L7 D/ i* Y

Functions and responsibilities:7 I3 N p x" b1 O
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:/ N& U X# \, m# i6 Z
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the/ W1 j: ~6 W' D% z& i
officers of the Coalition
/ s; v4 E7 { o( f( P2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural2 u- s8 h3 f2 p* k0 d/ H6 J/ l
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
5 N' n% i) g- ^, m4 M( xand public institutions$ r2 y# J$ E2 b i ?
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through; k3 f* D: n% t% w
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
j% ]0 r& i1 J4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community5 o' \8 u% k" C1 C7 ?3 D: T5 B9 M
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with
5 e- K: F8 o u" r+ x+ \( q, Z( e8 qthese organizations
; t2 p: t# ?) k; U& t! t3 o* a0 b5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community4 n) G: F* S0 K" D
leaders3 B. {* e5 o9 Q+ [8 v" h
6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic& V8 _( |: Q+ _
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society9 F2 S. H G5 v+ {- }& m
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working
! y8 Y/ a! E# [& @# u7 [: Awith groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically, w2 n/ V8 e0 s2 s- v! t
diverse backgrounds g% b8 `$ H [2 I
$ B1 p( y# k9 }2 S9 a( L( f
Administrative responsibilities:
) ?1 F0 x2 z& b; N- Q- c1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
. n0 C6 L) }- rregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of3 V- T8 Z N5 Q9 ?. v5 M- R6 f
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
$ E1 H. _% @; d! Zmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
7 C5 j! h0 r$ j( D. `. s2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
) @( U' r4 y y' ]& v0 r+ |Multicultural Coalition
R+ H" x7 i- w5 Y, Y+ k# m8 IRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board1 H& I9 ]4 F) o$ M' F; ], f2 P+ F5 }- j
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
' e4 J: P1 y& }- l6 ?- Timplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
# |, M( o$ p/ \: ~" o% u; K- Ioperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
) z7 O9 r1 X! x, P: |The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
! w! Q( Q5 H+ `aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
U( z f6 ^: _; n+ Ybe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership" n! C/ k& V' s h3 q
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and6 k- i6 a7 ~* z+ Y0 f* G) |
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of: K3 ^) c' K- X6 ?- O% n) {& Q
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
5 ]& `% D0 D( g" w* Astatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
7 k {2 |% K% ]7 M& mmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of; s' ~ i2 _1 M! L0 f: r/ r1 Q
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

4. Experience in administrative work with a proven ability to multi-task and

8. A diploma or degree in Social Work, the Social Sciences, Public Health, or

community level
