学习方法非常重要。把英语作为母语来学，还是作为外语来学，其方法大不相同。前者是在白纸上写字，后者是在有字的纸上写字。就是说，母语对外语有很大干扰。随便举个例子，希望朋友们不要介意。有朋友在帖子中写到：

I am not an expert. But I think without reading Bible, you cannot understand the Canadian culture.

我猜其本意是想说：我不是专家。但我认为，你不读圣经就不能理解加拿大文化。

问题在于介词短语 without reading Bible 放在主句里，并用逗号与宾语从句隔开。这样做的结果，reading Bible 的逻辑主语就是 I, 而不是 you。其意为：我不读圣经，你就不能……。我估计这不是发帖人想说的意思。显然，这种英文表达方式不自觉地受到了汉语表达方式的强烈影响。这句话老外通常是这样写的：

But I don't think you can understand the Canadian culture without reading Bible.

即，中国人习惯说：我认为你不能（你不是、你不会、你不理解、等等）……。而老外习惯说：我不认为你能（你是、你会、你理解、等等）……。

如果在学习中不加思考，仅强调坚持，很可能坚持了错误。

再如，有朋友在帖子中写到：My English is not that good. 这大概是想说，我的英语不是那么好。想表达“那么”之意，就直接用了 that。但老外的习惯说法是：My English is not so good，或者 My English is not very good。“不太好”或“不怎么好”的英文说法是：not very good。有人误以为 not very good 是“很不好”的意思。

还有人这样写：I believe the Bible is an important book to read even if you have no intention to become a Christian.

“无意成为……”的英文用法是：have no intention of becoming…。正确用法是：have no intention of doing sth. ，而不是 have no intention to do sth.。没有 have no intention to become 这种用法。

还可以举出老外学汉语的例子。如：He wants to talk something with you.

初学汉语的老外翻译为：他想说事情和你。

显然，老外也受自己母语的影响。

Actually, I learned this expression from a friend who is a native speaker. It is used to emphasize something. For example, we can say: You are not that young.

我们中文也可以调换来说：不学圣经英文肯定不好。学习英文不学圣经肯定学不好

这里我要保留我的意见。语言是约定俗成，不是数学公式。You are not that young 的说法不能证明 My English is not that good 的用法是正确的。也许在一定背景下，可以那样说。另外，口语比书面文字要随便得多。

口语和书面文字是不同的。在口语中，下面两个句子听起来基本没区别。如果不是特别强调，很难听见那个 that.

顺便说一句，如果不是宣读论文，或书面报告，在通俗的口语表达中，很少有人使用比较复杂的句式结构。如，招聘广告里常见这样的句子：

certificates, licences, memberships, courses, not required.

生活中很少有人这样说话。

你把这两句话my english is not good 和 i think that without分别用引号括住，然后在yahoo或者google里搜索，你会发现很多人都这么用

Good discussion! A little thing I want to point out is that we need to say the Bible when writing a sentence. (don't forget to add "the"). But remember it doesn't affect understanding even if you forget it. But in order to perfect our English, we want to pay attention to those little things.

Thanks, Suvscape. I am joking for that. Honestly I do believe that whatever methods you use, the best way to improve your English is to go to school (Link, ESL, Upgrading Program, College or University). One of reasons for this, is that the teacher has a teaching plan that definitely leads you to breakthrough initial ice-burger, then guiding you through the path. Most importantly, most of us have been defeated in the first difficulty.
