 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 3 X, U9 c# |8 G; a6 x" b
to their first ministry, to reopen a church $ O& o' f8 I- c% D9 s+ G; y
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October + Y9 K1 B% I4 z2 t
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
( U* n, u l4 M- Z3 Stheir church, it was very run down and needed
, z4 Q) c$ F' c5 omuch work. They set a goal to have everything - u: E* W1 I' }! h. G6 c% h7 ?
done in time to have their first service / b# H* R U7 O3 F" [ [
on Christmas Eve. % @* `5 X# G) Q/ l9 m/ ]; t1 }2 F4 j
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
# L+ [. Y8 R% Q# p& H% K9 n& \1 hpainting, etc, and on December 18 # l3 k5 w U; m0 O
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* I2 B3 {" n. Q9 @& T# \O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
0 c) b- i' C7 d2 z* _1 P. \: Xrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
! z+ F1 w7 t# F O+ D& L O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
9 N' @; H# h) s) z$ `8 x! iHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
8 G4 K; @/ @3 y1 Nleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
5 j# T* `; w( j4 v20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
, G/ N+ i, @* v5 `6 }of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
8 ]+ o0 w0 p) q! T, [ i" Cbeginning about head high.
4 V3 H' Y6 B# t: d$ d1 F& o! l; XT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 1 t4 _5 y; b/ |" L
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
0 U0 y! v! ]+ u6 j8 V, D6 |4 c. pthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
: _. I F# J7 E7 v3 r& u2 u# H5 f5 |On the way he noticed that a local business was # ]- }4 q$ y& n2 d _+ ^
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
# r8 ^& z6 t3 e' n, C. M0 Gstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, + W: x8 }+ r& _6 S0 b
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth & Y: S i; y9 x4 L5 B# J+ Q
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 D) p' r' F6 C! J8 N1 ^
embroidered right in the center. It was just ; ]+ d# L- @0 m# d5 b8 O" s6 X6 S
5 n$ s. _* Z$ V: k! k' f) D

1 h, b1 Z4 N6 g5 ]$ V1 |' [6 cthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
- Z4 @8 Q8 }/ l1 _B y this time it had started to snow. An older - a1 h+ n f! E- V% x4 e
woman running from the opposite direction was
, M3 W: N: @/ I' e( y7 Rtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
0 v1 p* Z! S. V/ ninvited her to wait in the warm church for B- n; R7 a; j3 h
the next bus 45 minutes later. " ^* q+ }$ E6 N7 F ?4 @) Q
7 w! n2 c) {$ J7 F7 X2 D% oShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor p2 _. @; y6 _, b! J% r Q
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
2 U5 a, f8 R& Z4 `. U7 c0 s. ]up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
, A& t- h" b8 ]' x. ^5 Ccould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 0 \: Y4 d6 u+ g* g
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
' t0 [' v* y9 W. caisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"4 r! X' K3 n2 H! s6 n1 q) L
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ; s6 p$ d$ k' Z9 Q& W& e, d
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
, \- Q. h7 O* Pthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into) p2 }1 x" K& \" g
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ! X s5 n/ x- c9 H6 @
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
- j3 e) C2 Y5 Y2 T0 }* iT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
+ X \: J0 i6 \5 K3 q5 Xtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The $ v* J7 l% N: N6 d0 G& h
woman explained that before the war she and
) Q% Z' G: S# i4 D: Uher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
" G! X1 v4 t/ f' ]9 {
! M7 L$ V. v3 z' YWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
/ z# r/ A* A/ F* qHer husband was going to follow her the next week. ! \ ^9 H5 i5 a" b8 T, t
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
0 d# C% X0 r: l* v* h3 P3 t& Lhusband or her home again.
. b' f3 K6 i, U" I3 H9 sT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
: N; u* A* V0 c* R) d6 p2 \but she made the pastor keep it for the church.0 @: |( n6 R* x5 r% o; M. J: e2 l! o9 ~, s" }
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That: X q E7 ]) N
was the least he could do. She lived on the other+ X3 _0 O8 l0 ^2 V, s1 u
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn

W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
, P3 q' R! @8 [6 s% _/ NEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
: Y( _& U; t- zspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ( E H! g- o9 @5 N' \+ E) Z
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
) y* ?2 |' |' p6 L% g& T: K% I3 ~and many said that they would return.. ( L1 P5 O/ f, F/ g; {
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
0 Z8 X( U' A6 F# ~6 Vfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
0 [% }- h- ?7 P! V, Bpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he + X& P$ h/ K( A* X. n3 d
wasn't leaving. 7 K. I% X& f6 C( u' f' u
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on $ B3 @. \* Q( n% K$ p0 N
the front wall because it was identical to one
& p: U( j$ [; Y* Z( ethat his wife had made years ago when , \. i: q4 M) v0 D/ j5 C' T
they lived in Austria before the war and how 4 U/ U g/ ~ S- i7 E" t% Z
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? , X/ M- y7 ?. l8 a9 h
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
$ y. L0 P- d# Z Wforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 8 L; l( A- @; j; g3 i
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and; i: q; \4 H4 z
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
# u' H9 j# ]$ O( j5 N& Lagain all the 35 years between. - ?" k7 S" a1 M1 Y, j" d
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
( m+ F! p1 O& t( y% xtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 7 p* P+ m6 x) @8 r: R5 ~
Island and to the same house where the pastor
) y- p! }" t+ X! H$ D; e/ v% Y: dhad taken the woman three days earlier. ! ~& w, G' d% `, I! ~8 B
He helped the man climb the three flights of
& g+ @% e$ n2 I. ystairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on& n$ G# l' v5 P. `" C/ a. u, O% p' y
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
% [; G3 l% c7 ]3 Sreunion he could ever imagine.
