( e9 X5 H0 a0 o4 f( I. w% c; H& }6 N The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned # f" s6 O6 _) A( e& F `6 U
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
& D8 K! g( f) Y5 ^& K6 s0 c) ~0 iin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
1 \1 O& f: _; ?excited about their opportunities. When they saw " Y" U# g* R( I. f' P2 Q+ {9 k
their church, it was very run down and needed
2 g- U3 T# a5 l1 c, g- Vmuch work. They set a goal to have everything , `6 e* K; v L# Y2 l% J* D v
done in time to have their first service & ^0 p. O- c u* W3 ]7 _
on Christmas Eve.
: L: m: I* `8 F0 h8 U& C+ r; AT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
: P: \+ Z% {& ?( i5 Z" {: Opainting, etc, and on December 18 6 D/ p8 C$ y" k* E
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
0 Q/ O" b4 z+ aO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving / X7 H9 c! M7 k# y2 V0 E& F
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
, s+ L1 o& C- V1 H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.( _1 ?2 J# Z/ z4 {% D b
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had+ `5 {. t! ^' f X' b" j9 u' H
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
) ?9 a( c8 K2 \- i20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall . R/ Z" k% z- u! F% S8 |
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, * w) l5 }' j& C2 |+ W, |$ y: I
beginning about head high. " O+ A. M8 g( r u
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, $ s: f( y! S7 l! X/ g
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
, m9 y" V/ m8 Cthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. # m0 j, z4 j" B* I! Q+ o* C
On the way he noticed that a local business was - N5 i$ Q5 C- ~- L& `
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
( H- H" c% I- w; P0 C; g/ [1 G8 |: Q7 wstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 H! L8 [8 i1 f
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / F. L' _+ H& e) D6 _7 R$ t
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
2 W# v+ n" i; V3 T- g2 |# gembroidered right in the center. It was just
0 C2 L( S7 W9 g2 r/ E# M9 Q) E ) Y; | V5 k. T( ?
+ P! I& k& `2 Y8 Q9 R! F
3 G7 o% N5 E) r. Q8 r+ d, w6 g5 t, @; ^; D. ]* L2 A7 f
: l j7 r. ]* i' ~/ `* P7 K/ i; \
9 f$ j2 Y& D0 w8 x) b6 Nthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
, z' l/ |# \0 W/ L) q v- V; \B y this time it had started to snow. An older ; ^ |$ p6 D; c1 e7 z2 g
woman running from the opposite direction was : Y' i9 P5 ?4 K, f# f
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
) y! _ Z' [9 o( g! U) |5 K8 ?invited her to wait in the warm church for : W9 B2 h# Z/ v& r/ d
the next bus 45 minutes later. 1 F, e* x9 n# D/ O
: T$ [; o$ K6 D: }She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ; Y. `9 ~. f0 j2 i' ^% n
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ; `+ B9 ?( i6 W, [) d
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 1 e/ h& B8 o1 |4 z; P* X7 z
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 Y( [$ ~1 T/ lT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
6 h3 h/ l* h9 |2 t# B0 B+ saisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
7 z. s2 I0 q1 a. S' tshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 9 W* B3 C' Q9 T2 Y+ P4 I4 J
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
, c$ F) p! n+ n2 R4 L6 ^the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
% H& L" c' ?: O0 Dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
( D- J6 @4 P% mmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . , ~/ O: T/ N; U9 h
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
* O) U) d1 q$ D, F0 Utold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
/ j1 V& p, O3 }" c4 _woman explained that before the war she and
4 ?9 _$ ^, o f( E& E8 X2 {) Vher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
4 x5 p! u0 l }1 M" F. ^. a w. u0 y2 l
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' ~5 s0 J8 `. y. z" E1 tHer husband was going to follow her the next week. % x# m& l! K% T* q
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ) Z) {5 n L0 G
husband or her home again. , }: v" m6 P* E7 m+ s! i: t* g& C2 k
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
) A1 B- y# Q" v# I/ H! d% Qbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
9 l( e4 u" C& T" e7 hThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That3 L0 c3 y, j( T8 A* C& Y
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
( A* H" }$ n7 F, X- Kside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn & e+ e- ~$ m! A6 V: w4 @! d+ C
for the day for a housecleaning job.4 Q- Z( t* d" _: @0 ~
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
5 ^/ X0 u. M2 z6 YEve. The church was almost full. The music and the ! u3 D% Y6 x4 q0 q; R+ c0 `0 `
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 8 D- M3 [" o$ h& x
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door m; A# D8 m' y( E7 Y* [% J% L( i; M
and many said that they would return..
, L5 P& {, k2 e8 P8 [: xOne older man, whom the pastor recognized & d9 X: `) T' {
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + j# E0 {) Q# n' Y: M( J7 F; K
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he * `( O }; ^3 k& K
wasn't leaving. 1 l% {9 S: [$ @* _: o
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on / f f3 f- |; L+ H% `5 P1 ]
the front wall because it was identical to one
% y# L' q" B9 k+ |" F) { ?that his wife had made years ago when
+ n6 r% I; r/ q; f! k; G, g: xthey lived in Austria before the war and how
$ L% w2 J( K3 p! a0 i% Mcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 1 p1 |7 d+ X, m2 f( ?
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
; u6 }* Z' v& N: G+ Fforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
& X5 s3 S9 E9 h$ }4 f- g6 Q1 ^supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# V+ C* A: E+ O( x; L" Y7 eput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
; ?/ t# l! j7 Cagain all the 35 years between. 3 l5 \ [: `) o$ B! f
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 3 T9 y% h: h2 V* U
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten % Y3 C& y n# Q" v9 Z) T& O; G' D
Island and to the same house where the pastor
# Y* {2 u$ u' Y; m* nhad taken the woman three days earlier. & y8 x9 Z& E1 T' `$ T
He helped the man climb the three flights of
" \# O5 J" U- { g6 [# vstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 G, O& h. e8 Y, }3 \the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
