 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

6 g$ s" Y. E0 }' D7 _8 }! E The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned # d& f) }. c9 [8 }" l3 k+ x3 B
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
# }% G1 I5 I `& x% j: H- Lin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
1 U2 k, M8 H4 J7 ~/ q$ E2 \! bexcited about their opportunities. When they saw - c- j4 a$ R; a n* G- h
their church, it was very run down and needed 8 b0 K3 g9 f2 J8 U
much work. They set a goal to have everything 8 ]8 Q5 O" D- t9 {+ d1 f- @- ~
done in time to have their first service 4 q: x- \( S' _5 _0 c
on Christmas Eve. ! Q- H. z* ~! x* P, L' Q. [
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
) s! o& Q0 O, ~! a3 Spainting, etc, and on December 18 & X0 q. z8 o5 Q" R6 A; P4 X
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
: N$ b# P3 t8 ]/ m" F, `! AO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
+ ~$ K6 g5 | v9 m4 Jrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. # F0 a6 B; m9 X( T
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.; E* |' E5 f {& D$ a& q
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
& R% N4 j8 R% }0 k6 @: O$ x% K) _leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
4 Z- E b) F7 \. A20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# n F# ]5 L: a; \! H/ a1 J) Yof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : t7 y& o/ h9 c0 [* i/ V( x
beginning about head high.
0 z6 k5 H Y! u% ~T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
s4 W0 S# V/ J; T: N1 rand not knowing what else to do but postpone
! g8 P J! ^6 A! e4 A# sthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
; g- C1 K7 ?& w. M) z c" \! ]) ~On the way he noticed that a local business was
$ l% s0 X. t/ n1 H- t9 D1 khaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he # c# v9 } n, s6 R/ A
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 m f8 [1 R8 P
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
, x/ [! n3 X V5 l' k; Twith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ) d6 y8 L* I3 R' O, ^2 `
embroidered right in the center. It was just 4 ]3 h8 W3 w; c& d2 s7 [% `

% }" |9 C, h& t2 I$ j! ^) Y

6 q z; x( t0 ]& I1 }1 V( B. f' N- d/ @the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
1 ~% T8 i" K4 p" z# k, ^B y this time it had started to snow. An older
: h- u$ t4 b" L4 _4 d# D7 kwoman running from the opposite direction was 9 {, |' O6 O) G, g3 F" d! o% E
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
7 H' Y, [; y- A9 w* _, Yinvited her to wait in the warm church for
* y% b4 q: a* [the next bus 45 minutes later.

! `( {3 S4 k5 `/ zShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
, e& I4 A3 e& `4 B/ Q# P9 Q- ]* Vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
( s% A' U* x8 s5 sup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 6 I0 [0 Q5 A2 B) Y
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ! B9 r6 S9 A8 n9 {
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center1 j8 V2 G; @9 v) o2 |
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"" X1 @' c" [* _+ m0 j
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
" N* E( H3 h u8 {' a$ s zThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check& i% P7 f/ |8 I/ C: l# u+ m
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
; p8 ^, |+ q5 J! U7 D$ Y6 W% r0 tit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
+ L/ K; l3 \+ w6 X0 u( h8 \made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 7 s9 j( X6 `& k1 w
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
+ h, g# F5 v! {3 [$ Y4 \! mtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 9 [' M ]* O, [4 X) c+ v5 w! R
woman explained that before the war she and 1 `# t' z7 Y" ~% C: j0 ^
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . + D( r: c6 ~' m8 O, r! v
) ` P/ b! }9 v; o2 ]When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
4 q. Z) X+ S x5 a5 F. M( _+ O1 @Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
& }. m9 D4 K2 R: PHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) h( v6 M* [* Ihusband or her home again. 4 r" @8 z+ M `! m& b
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;: E4 @; X: q0 o2 }# Y7 e
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
0 T3 }* o$ F9 h# y( i3 F/ @1 d0 UThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That/ `( g2 i7 Z& F9 C* R+ {7 h' d
was the least he could do. She lived on the other9 Y8 d' \7 ?* [( b- c0 ^0 J
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
. M& j/ O5 \' ?: N+ f( H- {for the day for a housecleaning job.
: ~8 X( ]; I4 WW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
: J5 q; T3 b/ k9 {( LEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
1 P. X+ r2 p0 W* Kspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 8 t7 S" Q) J" q3 e. l
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 5 [: X1 X5 y' F, Z' u, R; P
and many said that they would return..
% Z2 l+ @: a x$ A6 }One older man, whom the pastor recognized
+ A5 \" \# }" R4 J$ Gfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the : k) F5 n6 J* K* v9 w# @
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ' l0 Q/ F' A# i: v0 [# v
wasn't leaving.
, t* h! D) ]% p( V. ?! bThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
0 V+ |. k m$ k( }" D6 a" Y7 Nthe front wall because it was identical to one ( ^0 }. }9 X# a/ q
that his wife had made years ago when ( s5 z( Q! Y3 M4 o- ^
they lived in Austria before the war and how ( y1 P; ?$ i0 D) a$ G
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? & w6 v6 Q& ^, h& n; G! v% P4 q
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
( r" R1 J. p3 x- c+ K, F6 Gforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
/ W' @2 a2 q2 d+ g* asupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
) r8 i; I5 f+ iput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home N1 V% g+ O+ p* Z% T8 P! P
again all the 35 years between. , N5 [0 I* w1 S: w, V; Q4 x' s
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 4 V; _- S7 Y3 W9 A; C$ A
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 4 J2 b8 t& G" I
Island and to the same house where the pastor
# c/ J$ @! y; c( i1 `- G. Shad taken the woman three days earlier.
( H2 L: [& m; |He helped the man climb the three flights of
: N- Y% `/ w6 {# Jstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on) x# N! a% X6 W. \
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
/ E- k6 F: p, R0 d( Rreunion he could ever imagine.
