Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.0 G$ J: I1 S! A# W; `1 N
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
$ T" n0 D, i' X* \* Z- F+ Y) s" ]The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

9 X6 _- D3 I; ~. r3 K- w4 {"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 7 i2 L E7 f9 W, K/ L
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
6 V9 e$ _3 R3 }# ^' T) OThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
