Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

, B6 k3 u# s3 _4 K( q/ Q; _EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

7 {, X0 b9 S$ o2 ^: u9 a' O/ aThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.0 G2 o5 F% I; J8 |( @
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase., j- p) c9 Q @- K
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
3 C9 e8 y$ O; SEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.* V; |6 c# L, l2 Z
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
