Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

4 y- j, ]8 W8 ^, J8 uEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

8 p" E6 k) Z+ g; E' n# G* Y0 ~/ LThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.1 Y6 B& F5 E9 Y; X) f
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.4 o }& h/ M& _1 Z# ~8 ~ n
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 5 p1 v& ?1 e( u; J, q1 l
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
