EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning." }% }, u- O9 d3 k) R

The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.: L3 [2 Y Z/ A. E2 n0 c0 ]- u- h: ~/ v# L
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
+ e( _ u1 s; K2 l( e# t"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
0 l+ J) r( `( Z$ @9 |: hEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.7 U( H( V9 y7 i0 @6 l
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
