The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers

• Interpretation and translation services

guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign( y* v5 y4 q' a/ q2 b4 N0 }' |
Workers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
/ d2 Y2 N) ]* H7 z+ L" y5 P7 ]supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

Workshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and8 j- ?. C+ J4 \$ v/ s6 s8 W

required. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

understanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and

• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals5 b: O& t; d2 ]# f) z+ s5 |' [
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN0 b0 |, Z" J4 V+ J y, G
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office8 Y" y2 M b# `7 p, w$ P, y4 `
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required& P; x* h. o6 l( t
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment. O; u# o( K9 O, q* D6 i" e
• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services8 ^% _. f* s; y; }) h& V2 G
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency

• Promote English language services for TFW and employers

8 G- m3 C) k, p) Z) B5 s• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
+ ?6 v1 N- @7 p ]* e8 _• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
y8 Y1 z+ N; a* P! g• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
: v3 l% Y' D6 H( ]4 @$ }. D. {9 q/ b• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
" A' ]8 v" c7 D% p$ A• Excellent written and oral communication skills" z# h9 S0 ^. K8 I' r$ ~
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence9 k/ p2 m# E4 J2 ^
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
# u+ Y$ i4 k$ t& D3 U• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
& a n( X% g: t' |$ p! G# d/ f• Spanish language proficiency is an asset k( G7 q6 _2 n
