The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

Position Description:
3 Y, Z, w: S% {9 M' i, b0 jThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement& L* O% N- m, O3 s2 A# J% y
guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
& z4 V3 o: v: y- U* U5 L5 zWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and9 H6 |# m# @7 H5 u8 }" R
supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and# L: P5 ]* S6 ~" J# w
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.9 h/ p; w* a+ H" f: L: L
Workshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and
+ ?) V- L- p& D8 ncommunity based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is

understanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and

maintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

Responsibilities- O* V, U" M2 f* s: O$ L) x
• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals: u8 D* j, R: A
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN
# `0 A9 Q5 t( y. x7 C+ F• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office
, m4 B, M7 G6 R W7 A• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required' y- j: z+ V p5 k9 G: @) I1 v
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment9 _: l7 [. u; h8 Y; }$ D% P
• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services+ z! F2 r4 [; ~/ K
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
1 r4 |/ ^2 X4 b: y• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW 9 X2 U4 V {. G
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers0 H" K& D3 O% ~. w/ @% H) E
• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required4 `; A% I* X5 S {/ L
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
; E" |7 f( o5 S9 O& u6 c' ?• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
. z- k" ^2 i+ \- a/ |: g• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
- V4 l! q3 D9 \$ D+ V• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area+ i% ?% t6 h/ Z, R; Y
• Excellent written and oral communication skills3 E: ?2 Z6 P( y7 V- ^
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence4 W2 X3 M) i" |' f
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making; g! H7 W x2 \0 @% I
• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages! V4 _, z6 L! U0 A" b7 Q; K7 _
• Spanish language proficiency is an asset" [# T5 U# ?& D/ i% P) \
