5 Z1 s! ?3 S$ X" c8 e0 G8 D3 LGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ! t" }" Y2 R0 W( ^+ R( R

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
% R! ]+ B. [! A5 i0 m1 H9 GCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ( m+ `3 ?/ O$ q
news to report from that meeting.( I; m7 W: H2 V7 Y! ?
8 U. S! m& m5 i. A; OFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
' u' U. N5 T$ {) `# T. G8 [% eundergraduate international students from the increase to the
3 E6 q% |; I) T1 I6 {9 I# Q( Idifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
: m! z+ |5 m+ U2 B# Jstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
7 w' [6 ?+ {3 Y6 Ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 3 ]* F4 G% f1 E; d. d: c
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 1 G' Y U5 }. P2 Q* |
the differential for international graduate students.
/ N0 ^' E* W. S- t6 r' A4 d# h+ j, \" s4 P; p9 E) Q
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
+ M( Y4 j" }: C3 K1 xincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
) F& Q' q3 U% e* r* ]220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 3 M9 C9 l1 E" o- O- v6 `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ; K) y8 X! |& f2 c# K! A& Z9 ?+ n/ g
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
0 _( \5 l# J9 otuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected : M2 c, @& G) {- O0 }2 e
increases once they are here.; I6 J! Z. A' x
! |) S$ r# R h. _The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
$ w- h+ k. x5 W3 w) Dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
7 G/ e) a1 f+ K2 y5 @5 Swould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
, U3 Q1 {8 e# y8 G# G1 Qhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 3 I1 ]: m; P1 U, B! j9 G% b
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your + o* A- _" k, x
