Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. % G- j1 l* s A) R) R

. d( X, B: F1 V2 o% ?5 [9 q1 \' M5 HYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties . x6 \* a" k# l1 ~9 K q, d
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ! z+ x; P- n0 D
news to report from that meeting.
j+ _! ?8 s8 T) t9 O: o$ ~7 B3 X2 G7 Q/ E( `$ \& r: C
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 5 B5 D) d6 e8 O
undergraduate international students from the increase to the $ [/ I; ]: k2 x6 F8 i) V
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international ; p8 A R2 G9 j/ c0 C; U
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 2 J& O; n# Q7 A+ r% n- ~
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
& D2 X! P; ^2 SAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 2 G0 x% d# Y6 t7 f8 L& h7 h4 \
the differential for international graduate students.. b, X% P8 O, D) O
% o& I/ X5 Q: h" n% _3 g4 S0 y+ dNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 1 n! @3 d" Y" K4 s: {! l
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to : a, A0 m& p" I! ~; W$ M3 p( C* U
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
- C! r0 j& E! @will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
" q! [# c; `9 G# x+ z( nleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
3 `6 g- O! u7 ]' i9 N/ R8 {, gtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 5 |" }* N! i5 |( s1 f0 Z, v; c. Y+ i
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
( G4 z7 k/ ^7 |$ uinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 9 Z/ t, j+ m& x. m z* g* r/ P
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 0 ~+ S B$ N& [, [% R
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
) z" _1 H) z1 M% |# \8 H bincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your " h8 [2 @2 x# y6 s6 ?
