2 z; t- X( Y$ A! HYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties / C5 T& s& {. C/ t+ x" \
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 6 W8 R G7 \. Y$ x# ?% c
news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 3 f" L) m* q7 T- K* [) ?
undergraduate international students from the increase to the m; `9 [ T4 i" Z2 a4 _3 E
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 2 T/ `4 {3 e' S$ Z% S
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
! a/ A( z. R7 a+ I. Atuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
7 \6 u( G5 H9 CAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
/ d7 c! l$ ^* u4 K0 S6 rthe differential for international graduate students.; g/ W8 w; R0 _! L' }- m: l7 ]" ~* Y
- F& X5 \6 k, k* q9 ^
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ! X8 D' v6 u; c: C0 U& t" o
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 n7 U$ D- I% |4 \7 _) C
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students $ Y1 Y u) y, H! I9 q
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 8 A5 ?$ {& m& I; D
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! @- K$ w# W) l. Wtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
+ x/ R) Y# A$ c2 C6 z u9 n/ `increases once they are here.
! E, H$ }4 s1 }& Y9 [% Y( k; E+ g, t9 Z3 e$ t# X
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
( {+ r: R" P# B1 U, Yinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
9 [0 r3 Q. a5 k2 E- pwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 1 i3 l0 a7 K1 _8 p
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
8 L* k+ o+ t1 [' }3 _increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
