9 T- B% g9 z( O6 z. ^) g4 ?Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties * _( I" h9 O% U
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad / M6 K L( P: p" S; i
news to report from that meeting.: m# Z% n4 |& k) c, t
( h9 T# g& x, M/ Q. tFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
c& b6 D- L6 s2 Oundergraduate international students from the increase to the
! o+ i+ C/ n; y2 B5 p: z# @differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
' y0 M" [! Q$ b/ n3 Nstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
0 Q+ r, g( K; k2 Y; a& Etuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
+ \( X: z3 k0 O9 BAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
+ U. E! S2 E& J9 z3 h$ e V; Z" [the differential for international graduate students. B2 Z: p6 t) ~+ [. B7 O

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ) U* o$ p+ c4 @& m
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 3 [9 x( ~ ~$ d' A
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
5 Z: A g% v- w# n$ H# p1 Vwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
; V, h! U- X1 A; L- x w% G6 q0 Aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 6 }; V) `; j0 K
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
0 `" x) ^8 b9 `8 h3 Oincreases once they are here.) ~' Q% O* {8 f8 `7 S, j$ s

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ! f' Z* m, q" m7 q
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 1 I( \: M& w1 \$ S1 U: c8 ]
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that ( w' q k2 O0 h1 ~% Z
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
6 U- N% e' ]% C, P f5 rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
