Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 1 X% N& ^* x+ {. D' r

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

3 I# u# O0 C% b+ f% ?Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties - o3 Z! _" F/ q4 c
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 1 @. l! X9 F$ e* n6 U
news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current v* k$ C { x4 L8 W, A
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
6 h& R5 ^- ^4 u( A: |6 ~! w* udifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( p. @% m' O2 U! M% Fstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base , V+ X. Z/ c Y9 V, q
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). S! {' o) Y3 P( ?& u$ R2 g
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase $ c: k% u$ C! m9 R! y: W
the differential for international graduate students.0 L* E( C$ |7 n4 l2 c O) A
2 g7 E# m5 Z! P# S; \Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 Q9 Q: L5 d8 A9 vincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to * W* P- K5 P. |# O, G& t2 d
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ; G* v& l5 f- d/ }2 h N1 t
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
: M0 A- C" I: X1 sleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in - H! f, c7 R7 m7 ~
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ! S' E- ?) C$ C
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 9 k9 K& s K; A: z5 G
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I - d5 B: d0 ?+ Z3 v# m' y# f5 p; L9 I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
6 m$ n( J/ F# R- n. a1 ^$ X ]" S- U [have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this " [, x( l: B3 s9 r" f+ u+ W
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
