When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university ) S+ B* |! ?: X9 H
increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international % F# s' A! F0 R S$ ]; j
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,

8 K. J! ]' p6 ?4 ?! m) Yand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were

$ l6 a( I1 X: x5 ~3 u7 mWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
$ A, z! e3 c5 yincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
7 r& a0 r) g9 a2 d( s3 f; n8 t& Zexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
' j. b5 y4 i/ e xadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
" b0 p1 @) k; a8 }# y=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after - Z" e9 K! q7 q/ g+ W% H% N
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just

; l& g9 r, U; H# Sgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of 5 Q# w; H. _! [1 p$ y
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was 7 d. J( c/ D% Y. B' `$ t$ n
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.6 l5 w, T- _* F9 x& @! Y3 {- D

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of 1 `4 a0 ^. q+ ] O2 W, _2 @
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants % D1 U0 ]% a' S) `4 R) y5 _
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
' }- s* ]2 n6 N+ `* Dstudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

6 z; Q+ h; Y& f) xMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention + {4 M5 F; t& r1 S/ L
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and ' k, }( [& W. J* Y
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take b, j8 p5 ]/ X5 H
7 v/ T1 z' N4 N; [7 Minitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
; p/ a s3 H; n+ f6 X2 Kgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
