When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,

and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were 3 O' ?' U; ^4 n9 p6 y9 @ v
asked to look for a residence on open market.

5 W! C- m3 _9 u: L! k2 SWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
' [+ e4 F! W: h0 [increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
) g: t; J: y5 fexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our $ }. ?% r$ ]8 S" W4 w+ D2 ]
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students * S& X. d! w; x' U/ U; G/ u
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
) H# E1 M3 T/ T, a! ]tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just ! x- z& }' m m9 ?) R" n0 y) o
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am , C0 m# |+ p! e
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of $ ^5 W9 f' C* ^. B' D% e _
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
# r% s1 u1 P/ W# ^3 W- t, B% Radmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of

0 _9 \9 e- h* y* L+ Lstudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

- C3 H; ^* P+ T! xMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention $ B* C" x4 ^4 h6 U+ x$ w: t6 D
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and o' R1 h& \6 x
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take% `; ]/ x$ Q( o4 d9 J) D, h
# ^3 C3 ?9 i/ k7 u9 u2 E0 H
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
$ o0 G& w. i5 L& Xgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
