The Class 5 Road Test for New Drivers
What activities will I do during my road test?0 K, ?* v, Y) h R3 U# ?

The road test is about 25 to 30 minutes long, including instructions and feedback.

! R2 q, P b$ ~: [· how to do right and left turns legally and safely

· how to hill park (up or down): h4 f1 T% M2 D: _
· proper lane changing* a0 n0 ?+ ~; X* t5 x
· how to manage controlled and uncontrolled intersections

For example, if you do not show good judgment of time and distance when turning left in front of oncoming traffic,( i' X( U% y4 g( A
the test may be stopped.

· The Examiner will introduce him/herself and provide proof of identification, when requested.0 I7 y/ {, _* J
· All Driver Examiners are licensed by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation under the Driver Training
7 i; @9 j: Q( {1 pand Driver Examination Regulation. They are monitored to ensure they provide high quality road( o( f$ A2 n& g$ `, H: J% a
tests. They should be courteous and professional, keeping conversation at all times relevant to the

· You must have your Learner’s licence. If you have a temporary licence (non-photo)0 Y8 t5 l+ E0 m0 q
then you must also provide acceptable photo ID.- _0 X( S" s' K5 b. W
· Wear clothing that is practical for driving and comfort. It should be appropriate for the
0 `2 }& @( C8 ~weather conditions (in case your vehicle breaks down and you have to wait or walk).
! @. O+ s1 {5 S& e7 y* N· Your vehicle must meet all legal requirements (good mechanical condition, valid
* ~5 L% S9 ^. O8 T8 Rinsurance and registration) and have enough fuel for at least one hour of driving.( u8 A7 f: p0 x" T
· Payment for the test must be made directly to the Examiner or Registry office.7 s6 Z' S% C/ W$ n

assist in checking the signal and brake lights, horn, brakes, and steering. You will be asked to describe and0 P, k$ v2 ?" r
demonstrate two of the instruments or controls inside the vehicle, such as the hazard lights and windshield
" M/ ^* d! ?5 t0 ? z+ `+ }7 Rwipers. The Examiner will provide information before you move the vehicle about the route and the instructions
& g7 f! b' c6 S% P. x( p9 Vthat you will be given during the test.

While Driving …

· You will be given ample instruction in advance for each manoeuvre and activity.
; n! E- t8 ]& j4 q. A( Z· Points will be assigned for errors. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 points to pass the road test., L, a0 e* t; @4 W! Z+ I. \: P8 `
You must not do anything that is considered unlawful, dangerous, or unsafe, (for example, speeding or not1 \, L8 L, K) p
stopping at a stop sign).
/ K$ \3 w9 J$ d. Q% K· The Examiner will not try to trick you.9 v4 j+ l; t1 {4 [
· The Examiner will not ask you to do anything illegal.4 T3 ?% W3 Q' [( C, G
· When the road test is finished, the Examiner will highlight the areas you performed well, as well as
: q* W* [6 p7 ? R0 b. sthe areas you need to improve upon. The points for errors will be explained at this time.

The Examiner will give you a copy of the Driver Examination Checklist form. You will also be given a copy of the
3 V+ H+ g/ F& w* }: S' K H, QTest Permit. This will indicate that you have passed. Take this permit, along with your learner’s licence, to any4 [$ W0 }) I1 X/ {
Alberta Registry Agent to have your licence changed to a Class 5 Probationary Licence. There will be a fee for this
1 k, ~) i$ g# W1 v0 g* F1 Xservice.
