Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Conventional Transit Operator — for positions starting in Summer 2007. This is a long term posting with the successful applicants being called to fill positions on an ‘as-required’ basis.

FUNCTIONS:
•        Transport passengers to and from destinations on prescribed scheduled routes.
•        Collect proper fare, issue transfers.
  [8 B& Z! X7 N& L" r- r•        Respond to customer queries concerning transit information.
" E, d1 E% {# @3 U  n) @) P•        Operate a Transit diesel bus and/or trolley coach, on a day, night or split shift under varying weather
and traffic conditions.
; r8 l1 U2 G7 C* Y5 m" b4 |# J& M•        Adhere to schedules.
•        Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations.
- v/ r) K0 T4 i•        Ensure the safety of all passengers.
•        Handle diverse and challenging situations.

* P( [6 u1 O! G2 M) u9 pJOB REQUIREMENTS:
•        Grade eleven (11) or an equivalent educational level is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset.
•        Proven ability to deal directly with the public, with well-developed customer service skills; the ability
/ U9 [: D, K0 W. G3 ito be diplomatic and courteous in dealing with the public, from the first passenger to the last passenger
/ \0 N. e8 Q$ {# p* u4 `of the day.
; n# ^" ^7 B$ @1 f•        Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate bus controls, re-set trolley poles, provide passengers with assistance i.e. strollers, wheelchairs etc.).
5 f) B# C0 p% k* e7 o•        Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) and must have held a valid operator's license for (3) consecutive years.
•        Selected applicants must pass the Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's class 2 written test, at their own expense, prior to training.
/ A9 o( t- z9 G( I2 q: H•        Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the video test date)
! ^! D- {) `  d9 }% jshowing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period.
•        Ability to pass a written English comprehension test, a public relations video-test, a driving skill
* }* B& `, {( g: m3 y% l- [' Pvideo-test, a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, a pre-employment City medical examination and a Police Security clearance (at their own expense, prior to training).
•        Successful completion of the ETS Training Program.
•        Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training.

HOURS OF WORK:
1 s0 u2 F7 h5 O. I. R9 u2 eVarious hours of shift work (straight or split shift), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week
) f9 W6 D5 T; B4 ^" R1 ^1st year:  Guaranteed minimum 67.4 hours bi-weekly
0 B. U  E0 f1 j+ `Thereafter:  Guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly

The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
