CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

% P4 g) M& N/ kJOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
2 x. R& l# c+ F' zthe Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  ( c/ |; `8 c2 t4 s$ l+ r! K
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  
) l. F2 g3 C  p$ {Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee    M2 a% \4 w. R
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  4 a7 Y6 L. e0 `/ U+ O
year following their appointment.

5 b" |. R0 W& y" [# gDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 20001 ]% z5 Z% v6 @  |& N( w' \! o) N  {
, @5 W+ q( {! i; q, Z+ u
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.  G* B, Q: W: `7 e' i# j  M4 t' h
5 c% o( F6 G6 Y, y: ]
3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.7 h! M% K8 a9 J$ k! l" ~

+ e4 e- k9 ^* B8 m& G! v4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  5 T/ @$ _0 b/ _; R
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
' H0 }0 F% B6 z1 x. dacross campus, and advertising the poll locations.3 n* s: A6 E6 p! ^5 h% R

' _8 [  m' w: y" k7 S4 d) B& e( J5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
, D* v/ x# T3 N# f+ l* b# o7 kreferenda.% v0 D3 O9 b2 f+ ~3 K3 c

6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  
* u7 G( a6 ?' fparties.  I# t) L/ U: ?  J/ Z

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ ) e* m4 P# H$ O8 k/ m9 \& U5 W
referendum.# I1 V' V* q; P; N$ B

! ]) P. J- j' O2 y, {9 [+ q8 I To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
. r( T, F' ~( v* I: ~' eBylaw 2000.

1 F$ z7 x7 c5 z: L/ c" C! j4 _( N10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  , i9 E% [2 a1 L* X% D) w
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
( W2 S9 ^* R3 x0 Y! p6 kfrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
6 W* g+ _. e, ^% A$ B: iof voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.

11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  # I- B  ]& j  c5 h: `  E
the course of an election/referendum.

- [% j, X) l" `12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
& o! o2 y0 |. z* G) Nprocess is in place.! H. }% J/ ]7 p' ?5 `6 N3 V

8 i" R! F0 z8 y4 m13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
: U3 N; _$ j' ?* n5 G# z7 Qof activities and recommendations.. c' G5 J& ^# U; G

5 z: l. G. g" B) ]' O9 q14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
9 W0 X7 b) I# j5 i6 o! W& mof campaigning.
) j1 r/ ~- D( c. B! T' F+ s8 R$ ^4 [% ^9 v4 S" B$ U$ L
15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

QUALIFICATIONS:8 d& k8 a, _7 T$ i! k& \* B" i

1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
! |; d/ p5 f; Z' z: R( i( u' Hfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
, L# O1 O/ e3 a6 UUnion member.
% U" E1 [* }. c/ F/ I* m- d& ?0 N  }
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
5 s; z6 t! K/ y# H" X& O5 |
$ v9 W  w8 f+ O- \- X/ s3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
% N% S4 _8 i, t5 Bany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
5 o4 r9 S: R% J% O3 pwith the Students' Union.

5 g6 {, s- u( e  s  I4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.
