EDMONTON — Southgate Centre today began a $108 million expansion to accommodate more than 30 new retailers and restaurants.

7 ^( c, T+ P# g4 A; a6 g) RThe two-year project, facing 111th Street, will add 126,000 square feet of leasable space on the ground floor — and two levels of parking above.

- v3 T! R) `6 k7 L5 c“Part of the redevelopment will include enhanced site lighting and closed-circuit TV security systems monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Southgate general manager Paul Fairbridge.

The expansion is expected to create at least 500 new full-time and part-time jobs.

Southgate, a 36-year-old mall located south and west of 51st Avenue and 111th Street, now has 130 stores and services. It is owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge, based in Montreal.
