CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

+ ^" G8 L) v" WConnects Logistics, the sole supplier to all liquor merchants in the province, will be able to raise its rates Feb. 25, but not to the levels it recently asked for.

9 r, o3 g. A. D& X! n, j- w, `The industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.

0 s" I9 g/ d0 wThat's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.

4 n1 q! N- S* y. r7 U7 {9 f. aThe increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
