Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
! b; |9 I8 h3 e S% |& |, x* s"I am going to send it back".
) f2 B6 `: k; Z" U0 K, u% w! I1 Z! t# dI did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
6 {$ A5 M) R0 O/ ^9 S: r) ~ "I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
: L/ w0 T# f1 }$ G# r- {! AHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." 0 [4 A9 @& Z8 s+ t' {1 P# H& }" _* M
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" 9 Z0 {; {3 _$ S. j- N3 C9 |: }
"Yes, I did."
$ M0 V0 A2 }5 V( r. @% ^Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
2 p/ h+ w! X' z8 o( pHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. 6 D1 a( y0 O+ \. m2 C9 [/ |- r+ ~+ U! E
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
# y, C7 r/ X6 M d. z"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
l% Z* Q: i; b! I8 p0 a' |He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. 7 L6 C* O; S9 {1 j, A
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:+ q, F e, t. M$ i: b& C- Q5 N
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
2 }1 t" e- y; w8 Q# O* K& O$ z! t: j"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
+ N2 v9 {+ d% e" h"I do not have an address."3 M7 k4 {9 t4 s- O1 e- s+ W# @6 N& G
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
) I" Y+ }4 H0 HHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
- z8 i) T- \/ X4 TMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. $ O i3 d7 h' |, n- N
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
