　　North country scene:

　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

1 t3 L6 E* [2 T3 e/ U( L1 z" W  }　　Both sides of the Great Wall

4 l' }5 |: X$ C" y1 d* l  v　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.

! B! H) |# W; r" K+ E1 j  T4 R, U　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

" I! }8 c: V: G　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

" Q' [% K# Q7 J$ L7 k! t: f" @6 L　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

* Y* E- _" L7 x　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

6 L9 q+ V, O  E- N; ?　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!
