Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.

As a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
- b1 y/ ]7 x8 i, JConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.( x- [; i1 x1 b! d* C; |8 b" q
, _* `# J; }" R“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.: w# c+ q- I M. c, ]

Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
2 Y, a* A+ u- ^; M“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.

Sohi said he would prefer convicted terrorist stay within the reach of Canadian law.
# r# x& a# t. `7 |3 }“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”

He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.
