Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.

' g8 t# X. Z; ]$ ~+ ^( p% U0 F/ ZAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
: T- F6 ~8 {$ IConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers./ x3 D4 D2 v# G' f& X

“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.3 a0 ~. j( X" }' Z7 R: |! e1 q4 Z
" K' w/ z( M3 q2 c: O5 s$ U, lUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
5 o( `( N) p5 V1 [: V" t“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

! b! U: X# q/ m0 M3 SLiberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.
; e5 W5 O2 i, ~% e) z“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”- a' M4 J: Q& _$ K( C- L
Sohi said he would prefer convicted terrorist stay within the reach of Canadian law.
: Z9 P3 M) L. _. r“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”

“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.& ^6 G6 N9 N; ]# V& Q1 v
He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.
* c1 b- I- B: F" Y“The NDP has a very firm stand. We opposed the changes and we voted against C-24. If we win the election, we will repeal C-24.” |
