I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I' h/ m3 B+ k- V! P. n# k* H
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,( H0 d) A+ a' }6 W) T3 z
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and" ]+ o' F; {: s8 f
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them9 d! m, ^9 H& ~% C
will acquire language earlier and faster.
! X+ D' f& g+ ~2 l. K) W: E: i- C! {6 U. b( M
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately4 _3 ^- M7 ]3 g& ^5 j
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
- t* `. v( l$ m2 d4 zvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
$ C! v* m( L9 W1 Y* b: Isimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
3 V& k: q$ u8 b+ Y r9 Lmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your/ p. z; q: v/ l! b( g$ i
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.3 h: y# ^% T+ f3 _/ P

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common2 ]2 P" J2 u& _0 T" {
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and' d% B: z b) I* b) l0 E" O2 T
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.8 ~* j5 R, s1 E n( P

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously6 p' n) k( X6 H- o- p. u' P! C) }% L
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
# Y8 P u/ `4 F; @1 W8 p! Nknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to5 r, S6 ?: R% f: _$ l4 D
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.- W/ u" X& s, Q# j5 x) k
$ @, A ~6 d0 ~8 m* @1 ]0 |8 MFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
( O' F: g) q. c/ O/ q4 Uthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
( l1 Y) W2 K7 n* a5 L7 p9 Dover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she" E* t5 E5 l$ F( T. `" G) e
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will6 w5 T( Z5 y9 l! e8 O9 _
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data( f' A) I( I/ V* M+ M
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
, r) P4 j ]% J( m8 U4 |! Yvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
( V' @/ w5 }; N5 ]! B- sin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and

journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child$ ?' H3 o- b0 s
