Dear Parent or Guardian,
- I6 k% c2 W" p( fI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
# i+ }# H. L2 D, _3 }" }; Q/ fam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,% }0 X* @& q& @
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and7 _2 [6 J' j. S4 U5 X
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
( m& b: }, j+ s+ c8 c: I+ j" Ywill acquire language earlier and faster.3 ~$ a G! l ?& f; s
5 T4 w3 H$ l( h; B6 N: KIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately- p: F" Z n3 O. i& i+ j( U
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
/ r' y" R$ u: o( Fvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or& v" d: h/ h/ i: ?. y
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you- H u W( B6 a: A* j
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your& S: |5 E4 a8 p, m9 |7 @
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.6 a" }8 u+ q* R5 \' u; g" [* T
9 o S6 t0 |* C: eAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
% a* ?' e6 ]% K3 Z1 }% G1 @behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
6 ^$ h" u. U& othose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously {! h9 V5 z" N8 a2 V. ?) B, f. ?
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby% v) L- W$ `6 v) A
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
. P& W- c- I1 lthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.6 |* u" [1 W- Z
7 @( }8 N8 a$ ~2 S! yFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,- R, @/ @4 b6 H( ^
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.4 i6 v4 j- T6 a9 f3 f$ f5 Z* p7 x
0 t; X( ]! b: B5 W- N0 TThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done5 g6 P4 n/ _" N" l
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
6 P( P! F/ A, ]8 Wis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will2 x8 W" O. H/ h* `7 `
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
8 u- M! x! E% w6 C- Zon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
]: L# K1 G6 C3 XAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
7 _6 L8 L2 R; gare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
8 L' G* [$ M4 [( h& mvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
0 a: [% F/ c( M1 W2 M4 @in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
3 F2 \! V, u3 qdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,0 l$ F3 f, ^9 B$ J) P; Y2 o
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
4 d1 i1 }5 s( x& m I$ {3 WHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific

and the parents participating in this study.
