I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I% u) w) o) p0 [* p: l- L0 J' U8 z
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,( v1 w) ?% h0 T( D9 X8 Z9 |& [
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and7 r7 d2 V0 U- O" L$ X
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
1 ~1 J' T+ p' y; h6 x! }6 Hwill acquire language earlier and faster.& G6 u7 J, J) O" f, }4 n! \4 Z
$ T. D9 K- y7 ^9 f. K- I9 |4 JIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately& Z% f/ B/ V! b% g- G* d
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
: q. x2 g4 V0 x9 Fvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or! _5 e, w$ [( i
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you$ ?# l% {1 g ~2 e
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your5 |" Q' z8 p! O- Q
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.5 v, a8 v: }# } h7 `! b& P0 l# c

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
1 {. k. P2 M$ S# u( w$ Qbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and0 r. y: ~$ H+ y; [9 p5 w
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
5 ~8 u S0 x+ M' b7 d2 t7 y9 sproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
) \) `) }. Q: V }/ _* i" _knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
2 ^; i" N% C& y2 O' d% bthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
" o( s+ X! A- _( ?over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
- m7 j, f1 v* C8 xis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will: _, |7 a3 R( `8 T
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate! k, t/ S& ~/ X; x1 G

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data! E) w7 R" g- @9 L
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show4 R6 ~, z+ A8 x$ J A* B
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
" y2 J8 Q# `, y a" E8 D' G7 rin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and4 a: Q, {2 X2 k* B# t" e% L) f- P
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,$ h2 } i+ c9 [1 p' j
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of4 N7 p( {+ C( m0 u& P
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific: ~0 O$ L$ [: n) A! k+ E7 s9 B5 E
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child5 W& E& w0 z- a6 F* j8 v# @5 W
