Insurance required

(1)
. m( y6 @6 o: I6 s: n9 F! eExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
" Q2 L% R! G, ^% [6 Inot do any of the following:7 l: z1 g6 a b# ^
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
+ H% K* W. H8 T. @1 E, g" ^vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;1 u5 }; l, h, @9 e% i2 m
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor* B, O" p e7 W4 u" B/ z+ x
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
. C% v6 T Y6 h4 ~) f0 t(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
! I+ b% U9 c3 u" n( G6 n- zpermit another person
7 U0 S' b, O' U, i& |9 E# i(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
/ p: Q3 u& d! q: r; A5 ^(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,6 x$ b' o$ X! e# C
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
) M7 R8 u9 w; E. R. r(d) give or lend a financial
- ]0 z# D3 ^; V* lresponsibility card or a copy of it A" K# |6 P5 b9 n3 |
to a person not entitled to have that financial: y* H/ W$ ~2 {! ?
responsibility card or copy.

( b+ ]6 m. S+ M# V5 a& i Z% E' [1 U/ SIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
: _9 S6 ^4 a/ S, s8 a9 z5 {7 p2 twithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of" v2 L& A6 x- h5 j
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection0 x9 F& @9 ?( a2 ]
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
: V( c# i3 \% A) e( F- C* Wnot an insured motor vehicle.& @; |0 F, q% s! a0 q& G: w6 F

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
6 s2 o/ j% Z! R! t" n- n! Y; JAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
+ J- Y8 t- _1 _section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
' h3 D; n( `2 f$ ^- k/ efinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
: t( Z% V! D; n) v& eInsurance Act4 {/ k, ] P7 |
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
9 K0 b9 @/ p% c0 j9 Aoutside Alberta.
1 p0 X, |6 N% B7 g$ O(4)* H* Z* O& g0 s* a/ E
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
* x( ]4 U% e7 ?(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
8 p1 s2 p, }# h# ~1 H1 T, K) R(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500+ I7 l7 K5 j w7 q8 W
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to+ v* }: H/ a" L1 q y
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not$ F9 J+ q* j& D% O: ^. G2 V
more than 6 months
. B6 s$ U# ^- c7 Z" CMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
