" u- f1 `# k* P9 O- N
3 n* e& W0 O7 D        1. I couldn't care less.
3 u, V9 U& G+ [$ [/ x
' ?* V* i" ], h4 E& \  这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如:
  W/ m: z: }! q* D: t: Q, s5 j) a" \% W' X
What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?)
% l8 Y5 s% F3 Z. I$ }) A5 S9 x) E' ^4 W
  你回答: I couldn't care less.(我毫不在乎) # _, D6 I1 ]6 ~4 ~8 S; Y+ O4 R

" E% V6 Y6 w5 s# l( j  How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?) 8 {8 M  f  w) N$ }  W8 z
9 p* [# B3 A* o
  I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!) 1 B" U* \- Z0 x: j9 H4 M
4 Q; \6 u7 M1 t: b
F/ j$ t  w( W# b. v
/ @$ o6 }# E+ c6 b' i5 Y: T
  I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪)
3 l* t, J+ Z9 c- j; N
' m5 o4 e( r* S0 j; Y  而实际上他是根本在乎升级和加薪的,那么人家也许就会回答说: Yes, you do(care).
5 x, P' `- H8 q: ~2 x( Y0 N. {: J+ D& V- H9 ?8 M" d
I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. 同理:
+ M7 M- b4 Z6 D$ o. N3 j8 _
& a+ |9 g9 U0 _* b& a  I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意) , R, e$ u5 J2 G0 C1 G  H; V" o
' _7 U, _* Q/ J7 J4 `
  I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴) ; n: S4 [( F4 x& D/ A* x
1 i5 Y3 Y( W4 Q& Y* i
  I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right.
- M  C, s/ ]  s/ V  G. ?
9 w# T9 P# G( A- J; ^0 m  但是老外为了自尊,不愿强调自己的错误,所以很少人说: - @7 C) {: `5 @$ @& @: t; [/ W9 q; x

. v7 ?* |$ E# x  I couldn't be more wrong.
' a8 C& |, d/ i: B+ b7 t2 ]
I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少) - t& v1 R3 O5 A# D2 u" q
# r) J% u9 p0 `0 J3 c( Z/ P7 l* v% y
  I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。)
* y7 @8 T4 F( ~2 E) X7 ?& a; F& E2 U
  2. No bones about it.
4 ~! Y# c" i: p7 l! W
0 E6 S! Z0 s: L( F8 ^  意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如: 9 R- D2 a" z* K5 ?2 h& F2 F  R+ ?

- e3 C+ t9 Z4 a* W% i  His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮)
  h* g9 s& y7 S# N
5 k4 h) C+ T% Q# V' R  Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。) % F/ S; |9 L0 D! ~
7 I! w8 f$ `) b. W0 N
  When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法) # x, Q; ^, U; X# A- Q# m2 r2 G

- _5 b; G% z1 v5 ?; U  No bones about it;the weather is very chilly today.(今天是真的太冷了)
8 c9 w# I8 N) {' F8 d
* n% @( l& V# J4 b6 H* p# @7 n  3. take it on me! * S, V1 ^- z" y* W

3 z% f) u! {6 k: Z  意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如:
. o- w$ S) m" c! i" \- Y, d
7 A6 m) c8 e6 j  _+ n3 S: i  Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (one = candy)
# Y6 O' w5 M6 ?% K0 t+ o, Z. J# e: `  H1 G' z* M8 q, ]
  The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me."
* C+ \0 h$ S5 H9 d6 U! F9 @1 _- S* v* H+ P& ^- \6 C/ z4 p/ \
  Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!)
9 V: J3 V7 ], g5 e  i6 C3 D7 ?: {6 R
/ ]4 I0 P* H" w8 V) c& P  可见 take 后面的 it,是指 something,而 on 的后面通常不指别人,所以多半也只用在第一人称单数 me。 7 {3 g  [( W( k0 R5 H' P9 R
! a) Z: ~5 s1 f  N
  (假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.) 2 N% Y6 Z( V0 l9 J

; _6 U0 ^: s! J$ U, W% v. B  4. I am from Missouri. 6 Z) Y; L6 z: F! E7 [' ^/ m

* x  c# U2 e1 C2 V. L  这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。
5 e; B' W% ~9 [2 V! n

' G. ?9 }, Q1 I1 z$ A$ F  He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri.
2 F  _; w9 p4 X( _! r
- v- W: N9 j! s% v  Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.)
& e! W" s4 h* n! W% n# @9 K% _7 q6 j: }& {5 w9 l: t& C
  We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown. # {+ I7 _! z  |
8 _! d. q: A  n- M& p
  As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith
