You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
! @/ Y6 b; ?7 ?0 B  g- m) }) \( B' \' _# T/ D+ ]
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
6 V% j! u" D9 |& t
$ H) y" T, Q4 C  ?( |3 S, K$ qHis name was Kyle., O8 I' w$ D8 N" Z

* M0 }) ~! ]' V) I) ~It looked like he was carrying all of his0 i: U9 E; b$ F4 _# Q
Books.: z( {1 C$ i5 z: a/ d! p
0 S. a& O4 b$ q4 k
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?. L8 c* {, C. E

8 n3 \7 ?7 }9 ^3 P  D3 HHe must really be a nerd."3 o1 w" q2 k2 r
5 i, V) Q, e1 v, U
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.9 M. R1 t. V5 a. S
) X5 ^; |3 \- J- P4 w
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
9 R+ a0 A/ H; s
7 Q' |  Z+ l% Y7 h7 s! J' W; WThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
# K0 d% b' v, C1 Q$ W
$ `' X' G1 I+ G, w/ JHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
" X6 i! r: J$ s: r/ R4 \0 C9 v9 G, N' p1 m) z8 b7 I
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes  v2 \& Q: _7 s, J; s7 F  F
2 e7 G5 h, ]$ l( o0 c
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.$ B1 q  F, I; Z. J  h2 Z4 }* G( C
% E0 N9 G) N& y! u9 y
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks./ N9 e1 D+ ]$ V. M

+ c% V4 A, @. g5 H( ?, c4 a) WThey really should get lives.
3 O' _  z1 b$ D) R3 I0 F  k! I
) O6 a- _  S5 ?  |! `7 z" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
: l) M( A% |& I; }" `' h
8 {3 f% r% ^9 [9 s; rThere was a big smile on his face.
) z+ C+ s0 |9 S4 i5 V- Q  B! j( W% M( @
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
* b- k; V# O/ E+ O9 u" r3 V' p6 J0 K7 ?3 [8 |/ k% e* }/ `( E
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.3 N' S0 r. Z! @2 r2 m
3 M. _( v& q* {
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.$ ~+ j9 y" x' r% o, }
) `% f4 C7 s, I/ K
He said he had gone to private school before now.
& i9 F; Q+ c0 B3 o' V
7 N+ D/ Q8 T0 i, _I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
) s! n- t3 [0 L$ u7 Q* `- Q; R# @. }/ a4 s: h+ s/ B, P" u7 j
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.# I: w" a1 k3 x0 ?( Z2 {' }

& V. ?2 t% G2 X% \8 ~He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.' [8 o0 L/ r6 b" w

$ ~) p  o3 A, m# l; sI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
6 n7 `  U/ o9 r, \' U" I2 D2 w4 \, W: T
He said yes.5 H. d1 A1 _- h3 B, @) F8 r1 A

8 Z, t+ l. Y( N/ {( C: n. N  gWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
: n2 H& Y0 ^1 A5 y5 L/ y3 p/ b0 |
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.; Y& F$ V' ^4 m" S0 A
  e8 k# S2 I9 L  b, L5 N
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
, h$ ]9 M7 G" ^3 @+ m5 U  Q9 E6 y  m9 G* B# u0 [8 K
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.! A* }, t: [  |$ U# M  F/ [$ g
$ q+ K/ M! f( L4 H/ g4 n
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
6 J1 ?. D  _; p0 Y  S7 O' d  ^. t: \) L0 p
When we were seniors, we began to think: ~; C: V1 r" i6 U& R4 x
About college.
4 ^7 O5 D. n7 z& o* M6 l3 ?: a' j, ?
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
5 ^6 K5 S( b( }5 ^Was going to Duke.3 ~+ k- W( f" }. O

4 B) S$ D) o) {$ u( ]+ OI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
! q7 d% Z3 g9 y) ]* j1 f% I6 h6 w8 c: M% |# m0 C
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.; k. f& Y, q3 a  l

8 w4 `- p7 r% R3 Z* fKyle was valedictorian of our class.; J  i: D; l' s  W8 d
) {7 a0 }- s$ p6 Z7 s
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
2 |: j* z6 v" g/ |7 q- q
7 y7 F# X# ]" I3 s# ^: X' {# yHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.0 S- Z9 I2 b* S0 y! B
5 d& S4 U* n# Z) M1 x: s
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
( y7 x. l3 A, c' u, I/ {' ~6 _
" Y- a; P9 |8 S$ b* G- b. p3 {Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
$ I# W' ]6 n1 |+ e, Y2 j
- J3 P6 b% A* `8 y6 e: aHe looked great.
! T& L( p# K+ x* q5 E. B& U$ R9 b2 v3 v4 A" n6 |  o. h' s. U$ S
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
, s1 D& H1 p3 x: W3 \, T" q
8 p8 C1 l4 c* h$ cHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.: h+ {3 M1 q) L" Q" w4 E

0 Z8 t5 e' e, B/ H* t# xHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.! n& E7 S% }2 J/ h

+ I4 `# r8 k: N! s- RBoy, sometimes I was jealous.* ^8 @6 F* R! i% c

" a7 i) @& P- w3 H2 b! bToday was one of those days., y/ w1 E) Q9 B4 S5 V$ a
6 P, i- N9 ~, b
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
( ?3 c5 A4 w3 H6 x
& Q3 K) Z5 i% l% wSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"* }+ b7 S2 C! [, k$ E: C8 I
- E9 K  ~. M% }+ _4 o  h
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.6 _3 o- m2 b, _# ^; i: J
8 C1 `* i3 a3 K/ q
"Thanks," he said.
+ J! H- x  R" y3 P7 h, t  Y# _  H  R
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began2 A/ b, e: B0 K  \; P

6 Q1 K; ^4 Z6 A2 N- M"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
9 [( D# E3 ~7 \4 Q# B
* u7 D1 D/ ?8 ^& Z- W8 UYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...$ s) i+ U$ t! S( n4 j: w+ {) D

( ~# [" ?1 O- u0 C/ a9 ~I am here to tell all of you that being a
8 }( T2 |" f' M4 xFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
3 y* G6 J. t! o  J4 s. Z
+ N0 n+ J8 D* S1 \, e( e# Z7 M" bI am going to tell you a story."
6 B8 S5 G1 Y' T& N2 T# E: t# f% B  H0 q6 h8 w) _
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.* m; w0 ~# X( x' L9 W2 N
- E2 e$ r0 l/ A+ x3 ~
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
/ i+ H6 o$ _# K9 t' m! v
5 z, V( H' O6 u5 vHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
* V' c, Y$ n: m4 g" V( e3 `
7 z+ r* v* K* v6 M3 @0 J% i/ PHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.! z6 M! ^1 B/ G6 ?: F- `
  M+ ^9 K6 j8 t" s) V) T
"Thankfully, I was saved.
# p; U; t6 ?- u: ?$ ]
0 j+ f. c8 K. |% a9 PMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."& d0 r1 ^# F" y2 h8 ~. `

9 f& a: c$ p2 q6 W9 p* ?' ?3 XI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
- q5 R. {! f& h3 W9 W' C
: Z9 T5 d& A! lI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
* d5 ^. b) x% d& N, k$ \7 D8 d* }7 V
5 Z$ q% m' B9 T% ?- N/ f. j  ?+ jNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.- \! Y% v- [) z8 b/ }( {0 F! C
/ t4 r5 p/ G( e- z/ E! D; w& O" d
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
# c% C+ n8 V% q0 A1 q8 r
8 G. ]7 m0 U+ ]+ u- LWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
  B" C  r2 a. f, p3 d
# I2 l2 `0 o5 C  B& y" ]4 BFor better or for worse.0 d5 b. w$ C# w5 W% [: Y! C
7 K# ~) ^( K- o+ N
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way., U5 l+ H+ j3 l6 z
  m% b8 m/ K( v* L7 ?& E
Look for God in others.  v/ J  g8 ]0 O* B

5 C$ Z1 X$ q3 O1 f1 o$ Y' ~5 YYou now have two choices, you can:. }, m% d% ?6 d- `6 H4 u

) D- V6 d( E$ V- g' T1) Pass this on to your friends or
$ s3 s. H; y3 e( h/ y( t6 `+ H* ^" N1 t
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

  o7 H, |2 A  _$ ~$ l) {' kAs you can see, I took choice number 1.) H0 }: N( m- T: T8 N' ~5 Z- A
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

8 Z0 O8 V& @. c* w" m; t6 Q6 EThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.+ f3 L5 q; O1 |! c4 U( ]5 W/ s  o' F
$ H$ C" b4 k. k. ]' O4 Q$ e
Tomorrow is mystery.
6 q8 x0 z7 R7 e0 V( ]; l' C% f- e
Today is a gift.
# M& |( j6 d1 g; i  S/ n5 V! Y0 c3 O0 r9 U- E7 D) I4 A. Q
