You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,! {) _1 i9 v, M' I

7 a, C2 o9 A* yI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.9 h& k" ~  u! y0 W+ s9 w
9 X! S# X3 x% A4 D9 F  P$ S
His name was Kyle.
7 B' m# k8 N2 _9 ]( s" g8 y) h
" i  i3 |5 p( R& N: E4 A2 U$ AIt looked like he was carrying all of his7 }* r+ A+ H" y( k" R0 z+ n
Books.
3 w! M. L. M1 A; T) S* K8 z8 z  v  V# [7 A1 z# R% z
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
% x$ z6 y, E, n/ ?# Q( H
0 t8 \  s- b* {) AHe must really be a nerd."9 K; S* p$ [% G; f% B6 V( }; c

9 O7 i+ z+ c5 q6 b/ o9 aI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
" s- b: G) h) R: ?
% p! [' E( x- F& d) J2 PAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.2 f4 J9 g5 Y; \2 B% y( {/ `. r0 c
% Y+ o2 z3 s, {" Q
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.1 q3 |; v( R- v. v7 [9 @% Z

9 ]. E$ |$ r2 W0 m% l1 G: y. m: jHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
% S5 k1 E. T. V$ S- w5 e2 \* a$ X: `+ |. V% `& H
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes( r  v' I- |+ T$ [! r2 w

0 V: c& i5 r) ^8 g/ ZMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
: Y9 |9 h2 k  C: n+ I8 v
6 S( T) Y% N9 [) h, s( K6 kAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.& R9 L( _! V5 Q0 Y2 P9 i

: `  M6 a+ S& z, F  L$ dThey really should get lives.
% o, c0 j+ f5 n2 h2 M! `3 w' A' t5 O* d( i1 K
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
  X3 x4 W& A) ~& \
+ p- v) l7 q4 j& z# w' V+ DThere was a big smile on his face.( A3 x8 U: w0 }9 Y: \7 e) e
+ k2 A% t* V/ A% i0 a
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
! A- w3 g) _" K
, r0 @; z% R1 p6 o& v; j: AI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.: \% ~% R) b, m
0 ^; {+ r7 ^& [7 ?! u% ?3 c
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
' x; x3 K9 M# e; @+ p
/ ?. B! r: ~3 ?/ H4 T  O4 RHe said he had gone to private school before now.
% b* k& i8 t" Y# m' _. x3 H/ F! d2 M  `! p; ]0 Q. G
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.0 A, g! I$ l$ Q/ S8 S3 u
# h1 X$ U9 Q1 O0 q
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
% m! C, K5 C- ^  L  x( C5 i# H0 `$ \* p
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.; |- w4 f0 e; _7 W+ `$ S
( O* X5 \& c& m
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.6 X5 F( k5 H/ D* X

3 o4 v, A/ E7 c' j; n" O7 CHe said yes.
  m: s2 _& M8 M) A  n# @5 s! t9 Q* A. v
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
0 D( W. \( W7 g# T, A- C  M$ O& [) e- O& d7 s2 h
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.# S+ u' K# K& p" Y) j# f

' M# q2 c8 q: gI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!6 j4 X/ Y( H6 j7 h

- c. r) Z1 E" P6 q9 P% X" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
, X6 g3 s5 j3 E  f6 v( P5 F) e2 ], H; J, G
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
. ^( N* t5 @5 |, w) `( t/ s% g6 l+ h$ h3 N8 ]
When we were seniors, we began to think( ?  ^# I* q1 M) c" E' b
About college.
& o& b- V$ H% ?2 p0 r- _. h+ Q* ~4 F, {: d- |* m6 d
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I5 D. ^" j) Z9 d: f% t$ B' E
Was going to Duke.6 a4 @5 I$ C+ O9 v+ K
5 _3 L  V; s! b% t: w: f7 |$ ~' K8 d
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
- y# V3 O9 D7 d* Y; V# t: b4 X6 Q+ K0 I: U+ @; [8 m% ^3 s
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.& g/ ?8 @) D  s" }

! l7 d% v8 t: j+ j7 iKyle was valedictorian of our class.7 N$ F  m4 k: }) s

& b5 V3 @& H: KI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
0 S' {/ P8 P# R' k; T& p" W0 Z1 N
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
1 B. q& v% H$ _( f: e# m6 X/ X  E7 `) _
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
6 c( F- v" u3 w1 Q( R. r2 I) N4 ]4 Z) ~& }& n
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.+ v' Z! A' K) A! M/ i
5 \( |1 o) u, C! Z" {$ D
He looked great.
9 Z6 P5 G; E* C; e/ }' f7 ?7 T$ [0 @& f' H  \6 G4 M2 }
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.- J" L5 q( M; Y6 U

% n1 z: |! f$ |/ h5 O9 i/ Z. D, eHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.9 F( x  S2 g! o

: @3 ~, T# c' A' x! D4 _1 RHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.5 A% O4 m- o# a! F  |: _$ e

; F5 m+ |8 h& k, S7 h; C* @* \/ zBoy, sometimes I was jealous.  o/ `2 q$ q7 }

" s2 B$ p+ s0 a3 U4 P' [Today was one of those days.
3 t$ l7 @5 }4 |' `4 m2 w4 }/ D$ ?: ]- n6 j# v9 v& o: M7 K& p
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
0 N$ u% B0 A/ p$ B. J
4 l% k/ _8 H( [7 c6 B/ [, K0 QSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"2 N4 ?7 r# Z/ K5 h" `

, h/ G& \& e+ y% G$ j* Y5 i6 NHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
# T7 O5 n( E9 _, C! E% |5 \. Z- {" C9 u4 R  ]
"Thanks," he said.
' o9 R% `6 P2 v* O8 B* z8 E, [9 |5 c+ U# |
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
' t& r  m9 F5 W: r
2 K& L0 @1 X- d, c"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.% Y2 P" b3 ~/ g* i( ?. \- y
; p+ W( A7 A- V) Z0 n/ g
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...0 ]4 a, {3 |4 \) h  ?* I7 @* m
9 V+ q: a+ D, V9 R5 L$ {
I am here to tell all of you that being a' |( q! A' Q+ Z, }- I1 Z$ e
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.. ^2 |4 z0 G* ]  Z, N3 w0 P
: k. ^- N' M' G
I am going to tell you a story."$ z$ [! a4 X9 H+ x1 r: ?$ ^  e

# I! _8 d! a: J0 w. c. G) _I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
6 m% X+ _+ w/ ^9 X$ A
2 q5 `0 |9 [: t4 x. ]He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
0 Y  @4 K3 s1 p6 T4 \1 a& p  ~0 y7 f# `( J
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
) P! v9 j" y9 |) D
: l5 M5 j; ~" K3 ~, c) ~* D5 C/ GHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
. r3 }" R0 u0 @( \; g* C% |, [3 |4 T1 ?% f( _
"Thankfully, I was saved.1 t# ~  N' X8 y4 Y  V
% u# w1 O: m% k7 o
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."! U9 |! `" D4 _9 P3 h

# @4 z; }0 ^. o* z! \; \0 f- \I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
0 F5 p$ \& n- T  U4 K
7 K# j/ W6 z! q$ x# RI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( U% d5 `, n6 D+ K
% B8 R$ M  [; {2 \9 G2 t5 a- G
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
1 W7 [. [# L/ e: d0 s/ a8 _) k) E$ z/ @6 j  C* K' P
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
2 X$ ]* n& ^& o; N$ _
6 J2 T0 M8 Z& N! bWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
1 M) S) q9 x# N; @; m5 D- Q6 h! Z, ]1 a' h
For better or for worse./ F# C, T, K% w3 l: U  s: k

; r( t0 ~9 f) [+ eGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
/ A' |! H2 H1 ?! G$ C
' h5 |0 j- k* t" L0 e- gLook for God in others.! z/ P) v' c5 N& s  R3 X% o+ ?) b
  N/ \+ x' |- x) ]) @  M
You now have two choices, you can:9 h, ~& |* b$ L# S, |$ ^

5 r2 o/ K7 D0 t6 c8 G% i' W1) Pass this on to your friends or
; p" i) P9 c0 i+ Z% r9 l8 X+ s
4 T, ]* g" T* ~5 F  F% ]2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.9 f  a0 O& T+ z6 C' v
, O( K/ S* S: j8 W4 R/ K; U. W- M
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
3 j8 c5 ?5 [% D! h: R"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
6 [3 @% T/ y. Q, m2 O3 e# i/ j2 f* f; j& y+ _9 Z
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
  G: Z* h) G2 d! Q- ]  |8 I, c: T
4 V: w5 J! Q9 [& C  r. S/ eTomorrow is mystery.

3 n) P+ L2 L7 F3 q. a% J+ cToday is a gift.  L0 z& b! p) p" I) J* ^8 w( Y
