You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

& b% l  x/ h9 eI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
; v) K8 s7 z, _, Q
8 M4 S8 h# I  ^/ n) yHis name was Kyle.
7 o4 z/ E+ N5 }
. n! O' `3 r8 w. N" ]It looked like he was carrying all of his! C* C1 C6 o5 h' O6 |0 U9 C
Books.; v  F; h4 U; v& P8 w
0 [+ a: o! c: O  c# M% O
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?' m- c' u9 E& g& C, s5 d
8 p6 h& [/ K( n0 \: p: `* r
He must really be a nerd."
$ [; t9 q; l: f" n% ]. e* i$ h/ |' `; S
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
, d# b2 \3 T- S1 \! |
& N8 r8 s+ w2 tAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
# n4 Q9 c8 O, V& S  x
6 M; g# ]) G: U( v' H' k9 JThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.4 t  W; _& X3 F( _
, F6 l) O9 S3 ?) h/ i
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.2 M5 ?( h, \) J: ?9 k
# [/ _  S% Q: F2 e. s0 b
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
7 b/ J; u7 D; R5 \% c! y
5 ?; M; I- y6 Z1 u* {9 |My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.& B; @$ r3 m& C0 b  Y
: f* n! ]$ ^* j2 x2 o, x* b3 e8 K* ]
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.' B' i7 y" e6 o3 H" q

7 R, m# T2 N" c- `They really should get lives.
5 B8 f8 l" z% o# \" E1 O" Q* X8 J1 Q2 _- c# ]- O
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
$ q! f$ n& C0 U% a9 I' r5 T8 D$ d- M; L& N
There was a big smile on his face./ W8 n, x  i3 G" J5 i1 g
3 r  c, v( z, k/ T) X
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
- N; S) D0 f. y+ i8 `, Z& d1 Z1 z5 I, p) y& B
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
. i! S2 K0 r* k8 i( }& G3 _( {5 M- |) w5 F+ G2 M5 m0 o  O/ }
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.7 I5 u* K+ x- j
) R6 P8 Q9 d2 [  J/ Q) V& T; I
He said he had gone to private school before now.9 m1 H8 f0 B+ N# M. \. W0 N
: r6 F2 O. |" _9 w0 r  d/ \
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
7 v( P3 X( h& H1 Z4 ?
/ @; K$ Q( t( Z" v4 K) }* JWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
) U) i% d3 w' @) |1 s
3 W9 Z/ K. q( O: C  K4 p" `+ H3 }He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
" u2 F' j6 W5 C2 X. \3 j5 N+ M
9 @8 h+ ]7 u7 O( z) ^9 ^) LI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.# Q9 Z9 K7 ^' O  O0 u# s8 H3 U
) ]; B7 d; y8 j# E' L
He said yes.: V- A) l; J& n5 G+ l% L

) |, n7 @9 P; B- k  J5 yWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
$ @+ Z% v& Z! |- u( s
5 L& v, k0 n! [1 uMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.( o" E. x1 ?+ N; X6 P) {& u9 U3 a
6 n4 o- u0 n1 F+ |
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!- t! B2 ?. J) B& i) _! e! X, E
! Q1 b" I% E. D; g, }" S0 A' E% u
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
" K4 h* k0 C7 T+ O1 J# ^
& F0 M5 k1 p& d9 C7 mOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
+ Z" S+ C3 S: ]+ D; S& D; Z
7 p' d  D+ z' V3 ^% E  NWhen we were seniors, we began to think/ W5 A' E7 F( l2 K6 c
About college.- A) K2 {$ Z8 K
+ B. a$ r, P, S% U( q
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
8 ~2 \9 {" O; J$ \: @2 Q) @Was going to Duke.
, j. ]2 N1 Q1 m5 F* U0 v* U# K" K8 O  w4 T4 Y, u
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
) z$ M6 k/ q& X# u
3 Z: n- V! P2 N1 o; DHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
: F( D7 Y% J9 W
0 [4 N, l  W4 R) ZKyle was valedictorian of our class.
3 X8 {; Z4 h' v0 O4 B2 {% r( w7 T
( ]% a( C8 H2 C# _9 jI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
% M2 d/ o, W" d/ Y! V
/ O: ]' s+ T# hHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
" c. h2 ?+ R4 O& w
1 n; ?( O0 q: [* F- jI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak& O. o& c: S, z

8 j8 Q5 G4 p$ U' c: aGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
& ^1 a8 R( G9 P' k$ }$ |: L# m3 j( b! O8 |) V
He looked great.8 i; H. e4 P: E( w" A; l

3 ]: }# H+ f$ c8 [3 S1 N' ^1 E! t1 W1 yHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
0 \  l. Z2 m& i1 a8 N/ T
" A- L! ]0 j0 A. |, ~: U$ G; i/ PHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
# x/ H2 Y2 |) v; u% u% K  s
3 j3 N; U& [0 m2 nHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.7 f" k1 v+ t: k
4 P0 [8 G& N! f
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
( h9 I1 }2 |9 b0 H
0 y  q# [6 M, k3 y% J0 JToday was one of those days.
7 n/ m" ?" M3 G' g! v
, s4 Y; d( [) w! \& f; I- pI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
3 n  x+ b& d6 J3 \# t8 z. y  a, r
9 o5 M& N+ U" JSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
  \4 ]  h9 _; ^" a
/ ]. ^9 p% d4 b6 W2 |He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.# B4 E: E: p) k/ y$ E8 W% q) c
+ }, L1 K2 [8 Q: }# V3 K
"Thanks," he said.( B2 m  N$ [9 [& E& u0 l% z0 P3 k  `
9 z1 K" Y0 b4 [* H
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began+ J0 D/ V! p* O; Q
( r4 \' J8 n+ @5 f* E4 n- R9 Y) O
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
& K% K6 E7 H" }, N; M) l" k3 X2 t# A9 T3 Y, k- M7 X4 K  W
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends..., Y4 |' `, O. @1 d1 u9 [$ B
6 ^# j/ t4 p; [* L0 e/ C% U, |4 m
I am here to tell all of you that being a' {% b6 t# `. x
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.8 F: s) V- G8 p5 x. ~7 @

% b, x, t: I. e6 f* B  |I am going to tell you a story.". Z, L% L2 k0 T3 {' N) U  G  T0 t( y

1 S' W0 J$ {. ?9 ?4 kI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
. c; Y; d) q% Z* D% J* @
- ~/ ^3 m) R# H$ M/ AHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
1 t: m2 O- r+ B
. T" L( F5 ]- X" e! iHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
" h- n3 Q# w& v0 q: J+ J. O0 K2 _* ~: `6 K, \+ I  N
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
0 ?6 `# B7 t6 E3 G# v% c5 v6 Z0 s# K+ W3 l1 |. N+ L" ?
"Thankfully, I was saved.% g6 e2 m" C- t3 ]& @( \6 l
5 Z4 Q0 \$ y5 J9 Y
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
) f  d' [: k7 N/ U* }2 _. J: X) X$ Z: u/ |* Y# z. w7 p
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
  J* s( I: E+ ]
5 l" }8 L. g5 i2 II saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
: i  F0 C: f3 I3 H/ T" j- \
6 N: H! u7 N) M& G) N+ T0 ~5 N# pNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.; j; s+ r6 ?- L) o% ~; V

; j. I& G9 C9 ?6 uNever underestimate the power of your actions.
# K5 y) A' I9 }( E
  |' ?/ }% A" G6 x8 i, R+ zWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
7 q) _- w  x% c0 n; t
/ C0 z+ @+ q8 n  bFor better or for worse.5 M( B2 {  c! u! g

$ D$ n4 Z9 v3 Z0 W/ S) zGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
0 H9 h6 E# j# s/ p' M$ @4 w! w& d2 A- ?5 k3 s5 N# ]
Look for God in others.5 [3 M9 J+ i& D0 \
% V* G% e# ~1 d2 z4 Y3 a
You now have two choices, you can:' V$ ]% i# v2 z& g
: i& H7 f; P# q* N" F. U; F, P5 j' K
1) Pass this on to your friends or! w: ^% s( B- V1 f

; D5 {0 P8 a) R# Q2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
: X  o; @4 L9 d4 Q4 C% u! T7 \7 T* A+ K8 v# B& N. K! ~" |
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
  w. `: _3 l' {; B  b* ~0 v"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."6 T0 K* R% o/ ?  k: C0 z: k

7 u- E& ~: Z$ j3 R+ DThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
) q$ M) a9 ~; v7 U" @
7 ]& K- k/ _# Y( J: gTomorrow is mystery." b) b9 i5 B7 y# g

' `3 ], u$ Q; f' s: k& lToday is a gift.7 _6 v7 B9 S6 ^& a

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.

Today is a gift.
