You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
* e& N) L# d* F3 S: H4 S6 R+ w1 Y4 n) a) G, K
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
* M8 D5 E; Q( S* s- h$ j; N
) y" {' G& q3 D. d8 UHis name was Kyle.
  E' A; P: ]" f0 f3 I
) \+ ?* U6 S+ r  P* dIt looked like he was carrying all of his
$ P" C3 c; G- T) s2 Y3 o- C# ABooks.
! @: y. s% j1 T$ E# x7 S, F: W
: E/ S3 g  u+ |; TI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
5 D1 ]% b8 {# [+ x! n
/ |4 K1 J# K- M1 _! A. DHe must really be a nerd."
  b: @2 Z( @9 L" z  x- j; V+ _
5 ?- t4 W' W* g+ |' E" O0 z8 tI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on." b1 M. k2 v. E

) Z& y9 C/ A- J( I  t4 E, g1 OAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
& S: N; m) h! T% g5 w0 Q
4 {; J* `. Q2 T. E# S) _1 nThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.) r9 \, r. \9 r7 x3 {+ ]

+ `! R8 s! e# L3 Q, ]; }His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
- e. V7 x+ ?/ \# v3 x; c( }5 H3 n+ `6 U; P9 Q8 R0 m# J
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
# Y& {* ?' u/ ~! y" @  B' Z2 X
1 [/ k" ~" d+ Z5 a8 _9 RMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.# H" {1 q/ k/ s2 n2 _

( {' a- H& Q8 u  _3 qAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.4 |' `( V& D4 w% n& G
& w& K  F1 ^) w
They really should get lives.; i1 S1 }  `; B" n0 J. o
; ]7 n: I( {0 M0 t( c$ K
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
0 W# R( y' V7 T9 S8 G
3 y/ G/ Q7 R: i. {2 PThere was a big smile on his face.
5 f$ q- j/ v: W2 s3 D% Z: {
9 R0 h1 v; n2 p3 |It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
" ]6 V& Q0 o6 V4 Q! s7 ^, S
2 d! w$ r, V  C: u' cI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.5 ^7 _9 O+ u" Y
0 U: u* o8 O) |- R* U4 C
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before." Z0 G0 q" l7 h: b8 ~
" H! U3 D3 v7 i  ?% x6 B! t# v1 u
He said he had gone to private school before now.
+ |7 V' M; z( s$ b9 r7 {# ^5 C+ V. q6 M$ e. p, W
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
) [. Q( L& K  {* k
. ?3 C4 C! n, @& x- ^We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  G0 V) u& [4 b+ U3 {5 {
3 N7 r, W; h6 l
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.. \* ]  U* G4 `# @. @

. X* m' W1 Y, {  Q! L+ y* NI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
, g5 X6 r- I  N( F0 ?, J; H" X" U+ M5 h  \* |. a
He said yes.
$ e" ~( q( k( ~( E1 K3 a
7 d. ~1 g+ `  n! [' A" D- C* DWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
5 h6 p$ \& E6 }* X# B, p4 j/ O' I1 y9 y& A# Y: v# B+ ]! n1 h
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.! f0 m# r2 |1 q

, l! J/ H+ y; b) `( Z3 x1 S7 B# ?4 TI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!$ Q/ s- D1 G3 |& o( {
* u8 `4 x( D: B
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.: \4 j, y2 g, H" ~

" ?- B: X( I3 Y# k, W# jOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.. z# E3 Q' @; n7 L8 ~

5 d! z" q) o1 {8 U7 lWhen we were seniors, we began to think
; r6 {; W6 y- C' bAbout college.
' o+ S9 a  I: _; x9 o( \
9 [0 T! F9 e' O: {8 y2 e6 IKyle decided on Georgetown, and I- G# C' E* g4 _: ]6 s. q( F4 m4 M4 a
Was going to Duke.+ }- j% A/ d; R7 A* B7 S, Q

' p0 F1 L- h* J. pI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
( @" Y4 ~8 c, L2 y# T, {% @
. c2 d" m* V: j7 R; uHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
% C: \3 z/ x! o8 s8 ~9 T- D
; R" W9 x! w% c; E9 }- E5 F/ EKyle was valedictorian of our class.
" L5 @6 w/ }$ T
. ]* v( I5 C2 Q8 m) X4 h( E+ sI teased him all the time about being a nerd.8 `' U/ K4 e- S
3 C6 B, J; K# R" w* P2 g
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
/ V6 H0 w  }9 d% `2 y
9 M& @+ _4 O" j6 a  p) zI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak. I! p/ T# x. Z. P5 s1 ^

: {# Y8 K# _6 s4 u& t. jGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
. G/ ?. j  e9 F- c* T8 _* a$ B* Q1 E9 z
He looked great.
* k* O- m. t. M# L& w! r+ N, P: d8 S; u0 h
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.# @4 N" `7 e& l8 T

, f# [* D- J4 m- yHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.8 V% H2 i/ P0 u; K
! [6 a! p) c* I: x" V
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him." I/ h8 S; l) @" c& Y) j( {

  g, A% i, K7 J+ h) o( I& ^Boy, sometimes I was jealous.0 ^# u! P- J! b/ ]; ?: s$ Q/ e
. l& C$ U# w" R" s% h4 M
Today was one of those days.* r" r6 D# v8 d
7 ?$ B3 C7 H& m3 [
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
, f: m- x# x2 v
! U; y1 [9 f& y9 OSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
3 h! K1 v' J# ~" \) H4 i. S, J. t$ i
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
# Y# S4 D; z! \8 |( c. Q# N5 K6 r7 T4 w' F; y
"Thanks," he said.) [7 d. ]0 b) L

& v1 t! h4 b3 @# c' u- OAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began8 k" R8 \) X6 B* t% \

" P7 T: v' E0 v2 t! w0 C$ b6 E6 z"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
5 y+ u" P& z4 i6 q  \& W1 Y+ ~  ]
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
  P+ s. K, p4 b/ Y/ X
* i3 f8 n- z6 K$ q# s3 q$ G2 eI am here to tell all of you that being a
9 h; ]% b& m2 M% gFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.$ S0 c7 y+ ~7 F( |4 G9 ~
# v# T- d& h4 I/ t; H9 Y
I am going to tell you a story."
: n$ y3 K+ ^; ]
! s3 i1 T; m; W- Y, \2 U& d/ L% V/ uI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.! t1 Y% Q. [6 F  B5 C4 r
" }  G( M8 U6 `* T0 A
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.! |. @$ O0 Q7 i& n% Z0 o

- n( n, s( B- M2 @/ f8 T3 N5 tHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
, y& h% _+ r( g' @  Q& N% {2 g* M. l* w- e) E  p
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
9 x- V: [. ?8 l- A% Q2 ~/ X9 x0 D1 }, o
- D  f$ q+ i8 V) M% r"Thankfully, I was saved.- \5 h$ s- I9 X

- `( h9 l+ l( U8 b6 m* p; qMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."4 q+ x7 L5 Q  A8 u

0 f# Z7 \8 R% C9 tI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.+ J. n) `% F( }: r6 ~# y0 s0 o
5 R' L2 s! }' t. ?
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile., h, S' k% p" K/ [3 n9 _/ }

& r1 O+ p  u' a2 t: r6 M+ iNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
$ I9 `- F8 [! ?
; P/ F" g# Q! l& ^Never underestimate the power of your actions.) W/ H- f! r  O; D
3 Z7 l2 @0 ]; D: J& W5 o: M8 q
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.# |. l' @; Y$ u. n9 k
" D' c; j: ^4 H9 w
For better or for worse.
8 H5 [% u  q9 V7 O6 {  |
. l. B' `5 k1 r" y7 I  M! v9 W$ }God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.# O. v& N8 f& l: W9 t% u
# J' U3 A5 G) x: _- U4 P0 t
Look for God in others., N0 q$ E  ?5 V" w2 b# w' C( ^

+ x% y( D1 B/ a: T8 k+ c0 b( tYou now have two choices, you can:

$ R1 M' t# ~( [) j1) Pass this on to your friends or
+ j' C( ?" K, u7 W- F: O6 ]3 U6 V- N# Z5 ^2 g7 ~
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

4 |6 P. f5 n, F- ?As you can see, I took choice number 1.0 v' K5 m! q3 w$ ~3 n
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.": g$ M3 d; F( u6 R
  ~' _! ^' |! V/ f8 u$ {0 r
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
/ _8 d  i* J' a* ~/ ^4 ?, U" b% p6 O* }) E' l
Tomorrow is mystery.
0 h6 d3 v# Z! V2 R1 ?2 n/ h7 h8 f* z  Q& e" ]7 u" r/ j% y5 j
Today is a gift.+ S' t: d7 B. t" v3 E' e& \' k
