You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
% U" t! t- [  c; ], e  C: H  v7 F  a
0 l6 q9 N/ |0 B4 ~I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.- p/ s4 O# y4 [1 F$ L5 l

+ s7 V' q; \# p: L9 \8 ~5 MHis name was Kyle.
: Y% n) C5 q# t
- A3 |  m3 V" I# m; a: w! E6 vIt looked like he was carrying all of his
7 @3 f, e% Z* j6 d3 t, LBooks.
  i7 x* y7 b$ q# d
' Q( o" G7 F4 t6 w3 g2 X/ eI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?) _# |. {7 n, R8 n/ Z% C

' Y" w  G' y% x. T+ j5 `He must really be a nerd."
( ]/ o# j% o9 `& `2 r+ T' m4 ]8 o; g# _9 n, s
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.- X- X$ Z3 O, R$ l, n! k4 @# y

7 N9 ]6 L8 {) ~9 d9 C9 g- d3 vAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.5 d4 L% j3 _6 \+ C. E/ `

9 O8 G, e0 s( oThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.7 J) w! j! C8 \5 L9 m
. t. G& @, R) z; ~- ~5 I( J9 X
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
# A- H# c8 W# T/ e1 F- G. o( j" {" W
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes7 P7 k: F5 r. Y& r4 Q$ B+ p* P

% i3 P# B! P1 W6 zMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
- P- s/ c' D6 ?1 I6 {1 }1 r2 X8 p
9 f; h% e3 x* Y  [% ZAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
9 a- t* q) C( t! f. [" L% G4 W7 ~
They really should get lives.
( F- o7 ]6 c' E1 g1 W5 f1 ^3 ]0 h' A
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
! N2 |8 d  v& ^% g5 v5 }& V) U1 B" V4 F; y  Y
There was a big smile on his face.
, ]9 ]- V. P: B$ x' L* j* H% C( s3 `/ o' l5 Y. X  L
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
. C9 n5 f% w6 Z0 p6 v  N. Q+ H6 a* @8 d3 v
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.. H. M3 ~) ~) h" j, M: l

) R. m0 Q# q4 t) Z6 {, z& B& }% _As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.+ N; `$ t) T0 N1 c. J
: O+ K; d7 `$ f6 ?" A7 A) n
He said he had gone to private school before now.0 {1 B1 D- Y4 O+ s4 W. S" w2 L, T

; ]7 L1 B, l! u0 |  k7 TI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.+ ?2 P% t  b* |, x& L( |

% }# r, w- U" i5 E# Y7 f8 Q. IWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: g! }' M) f3 a* z3 u. ]. \0 n
0 B( O  I) I8 l/ `/ ]' PHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.3 W. ^8 a. R- a1 T, h  K
7 ]0 R2 I5 y( M7 q% b; y
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
$ `' M9 b* u6 C0 F$ X( q- f2 i2 b" ^) W: X4 _- t8 G& a% k: ]: @
He said yes.- M% Z8 X0 ?: @. e
% M( |7 f$ n3 C% r8 T# [: O
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.* u; c% G# r" u; F! [

/ T$ s  |. z. {$ p' ^! aMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
$ o6 m* `0 N/ @. E- L9 c5 U7 W4 I
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!& }9 C1 c' c! n! ^

0 d! j7 ~+ M; V8 R+ @& I" He just laughed and handed me half the books.% o3 a$ l, r  \1 r: f- w1 c7 Y

, c( B4 L3 @5 Q) s; ?Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
& P6 r' o) U: s( [
# c  G/ _. n0 C; |, Y7 v% CWhen we were seniors, we began to think
* i3 G- F5 K6 i" fAbout college.
2 p4 Q! E; j" d- S' Z8 M) J8 i- @. P7 V1 D
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I) C- Y3 Y! u: _5 ^) e6 a, ]
Was going to Duke.1 M# u; Q: F; i

9 K9 k! L# N6 ~" d& A! f6 eI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
" q3 V- D/ h6 T3 ~/ s$ u5 e5 U
' g( i6 ]0 A. i# z# L5 N; ^He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
6 d: Z! l2 S# b2 n+ y
4 ^: T) ~# `; z$ Q+ q" kKyle was valedictorian of our class.1 j4 g9 W4 o' R& a: o

) J* j9 k; ]- C( Q/ jI teased him all the time about being a nerd.: s' L  q' b$ F0 B

! c6 j" P/ G& Y, L4 B* NHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.1 j2 h$ |* q( B: H
; w* U& R. C3 w8 R. w+ F
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
, l# d. j; t6 h1 _+ E( c5 ?, j! o7 G+ G+ Q  X9 A( U4 n) T
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
) v0 S' z9 x. a: B6 {' u1 `" L. U% T, l! D% s; H; N3 a
He looked great.
6 o3 w" _$ d# S, o# d" Y  ^1 U) ~0 R; a4 F/ [
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school." W; y+ S9 T, r+ B. H. O& ?

1 v; Y: [: O2 {. f- U' F0 r7 THe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.& \" s6 c: |! F6 h$ v( p% P
8 o/ W7 E3 w; d3 J/ M: x
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.5 p( L; b  }" I/ }2 I7 ^* G8 W
# O; y7 B9 j% _- [+ H0 G
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.9 c; M3 M, U7 A4 V6 C+ C

, v! d% m' u4 {2 T: f. C+ bToday was one of those days.( z' K1 O; N/ i3 k& R

: E2 M! D2 b' xI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
8 B! W& R/ b& m2 x: Q* l; j+ D* w: `
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"# Z6 l$ G) D! U2 e: Z% L0 K' |/ d: A! m

" i6 ?6 S1 V  F* W% g- |. U  wHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
, a- K( n: W  p5 ^/ W6 X$ B1 }) k4 n; U, W
"Thanks," he said.
1 k* s  N) ~2 I. u" l* f$ }
  G6 {% C. {/ K. _As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
; }, j+ u$ U+ M* h. M0 ]) L0 K
4 I6 p# P: V3 n- K9 a"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.( j' R: k+ M. R) ]

8 W) D) d/ m( e: C1 IYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends..." Q7 Q- s. ]& k" t
- ?9 ?0 S  ]8 ~4 A& o) t1 o6 J: M' @
I am here to tell all of you that being a
' \( Z% K- i; ]# n0 ~0 i; H& J6 r# bFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them./ X7 W7 O# ~2 n- N9 H. \# W4 Y

9 c0 ^0 {) u- f1 ~( O* f* h  QI am going to tell you a story."
& ?$ x7 \1 {, z, s4 e: ]+ o' a* K+ i% b5 J. I
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.4 W2 a) [. q( z
1 d: q( Q% s- Z
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.& z2 J$ g2 z4 ]3 y

$ a; y6 E3 D" ^He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.2 t$ q9 u/ f/ q$ E

2 d' o* q+ U% Z' AHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
+ T( b+ ?( N$ u" N, U# s) U" G# H. q8 }' f
"Thankfully, I was saved.8 y* Q8 b3 q' W9 ?6 T$ {; i2 E
: t' I5 |3 K, _  T  Z& D
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."4 g2 B+ h) w% }3 d4 [
" E" |7 f. R7 T( T" {
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.5 X# `8 o! V" m3 n( T. K

1 M0 z. `2 _* r3 H8 kI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
/ I/ j7 k# `) i1 W1 W- g. i, E% i# w3 U9 C& B3 T  v
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
- w' L  I5 J1 j0 Z8 B- E7 F% E8 X# o
1 V/ l$ R6 ^/ n( N! |& h* wNever underestimate the power of your actions.6 u6 s% Z: I/ d  M& ]* C6 A, t) z

0 M$ s4 L0 \, S+ a9 O. K! B7 KWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
8 W8 P# i3 L' W" V
; z5 {, F0 D" K) t/ N5 N% _$ e4 Z7 t, HFor better or for worse.% g( S3 o: ~2 {3 V
5 M# P+ ^2 ?! W! }3 X& e0 k- M# s
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.+ g' h- L9 c7 I3 e8 X+ o7 A

' R) T/ j0 F8 G  J- t+ w* }Look for God in others.
+ z) g+ v) i3 S
6 p5 U; Y; D; x- `: P) QYou now have two choices, you can:+ V' T7 \  c5 o/ r2 @3 g  B# u5 c
+ ]8 }$ O; {& d
1) Pass this on to your friends or
  A8 w( r! T  i7 W  j
6 G8 y0 X7 z  R" r% U2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.% m! w  I* X6 B" o

2 i: q: c' [- w, Z2 TAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ r; A% v4 q% y3 x% I5 t"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
$ ^* u2 {6 B9 o
8 f& k& {6 H$ t* kThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
' [9 M& P) V1 I* v) C4 c$ _6 v
: Q7 W% Z' y+ D+ OTomorrow is mystery.

Today is a gift.
