You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,1 P/ \' z. q& Y

* q  I% [1 F+ @' T* z0 g/ p" EI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.$ e9 e* P0 _( D, J
( k' n+ o0 v% k0 P8 }+ m
His name was Kyle.. c9 d0 P, Y5 L8 C6 T! g+ I5 T

5 S3 {' N+ J" c, o8 O+ g: F, a0 WIt looked like he was carrying all of his
! b$ Z( b( v  T; J/ V% yBooks.
8 W: o" _( s9 b  n+ V/ P: @" j$ y+ y0 b" Z6 o, }6 l$ ?+ J0 f6 y
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
( C3 t' a1 }; M" U$ X+ v9 ^
+ ?2 D7 ^  n0 EHe must really be a nerd."
& ], ]3 l/ E  p
; P+ |, O/ A" `! l- m- t2 b  tI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
  o$ q7 @3 R( _: a# P; A+ N7 |( \% x0 a! w, K4 q$ W! |
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
; S, _2 ~7 V! I6 O; U5 H6 {
( ~; U/ R( G+ D2 N# `4 d$ IThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
' e2 {4 j( ]7 V$ Q9 ^$ u# C1 M$ k$ [$ r2 Q( p& X
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
( G6 J/ Z. I; I. B0 K0 \
/ O6 b1 D+ H0 o' PHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
  U% X$ a: a- i* |% V( S; v- Y, F, G. J8 f# u9 ^# z* j/ T
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.' q4 E+ x! L7 k6 _/ m

" l! T7 L; V) Y: {$ hAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
/ d- @0 @$ B; m  h9 r2 f7 U4 p2 h9 J4 Y: e# `
They really should get lives.4 k7 X, t/ m& ]" V! q2 r7 q
7 g! ]; Y  m# y( j
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!", G& @+ J5 V6 ^. `6 d

1 Q3 V7 e" D# {; c( ], oThere was a big smile on his face.+ _% m# G( M4 p- Y! x9 T
% p( q$ O1 M6 G- c6 v- a4 r" [
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
: J6 W: ?& r; q, f+ j8 u# D5 k' E$ p0 c/ Y
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.( J" Y7 K, c, B* K3 S

, g. S# x; q. \  KAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
' w% m; j! J* Z  T7 g/ ?
+ l) b* B# a8 ?. w6 A! o) }He said he had gone to private school before now.
( l8 C3 y) L- ^- W$ k# W( o6 a* r/ ]. l
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
% X3 }( Z! \3 s/ F& J9 u5 L1 `9 w9 Z' c
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
8 r- \7 [, R3 \9 A: E! l# h3 n
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
% u' [1 i8 q! T6 l9 T
; Q  A5 d/ x1 z" [9 }I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.& t. Q! U* y" k1 E

# J. {* D6 l$ I: A$ N2 Y; W- rHe said yes.0 i* x; D. `7 H8 ~; P- Q) B
# ~. P1 j/ P( k7 K% s7 K7 u( H4 b
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
3 d+ w; U, ]2 b/ f3 u% E, ]6 _: r2 U+ y7 b2 ~' P- M, k
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
6 b& O6 R4 s* [4 ]: _
! r1 U% s6 v! o! a9 uI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
- ?# [# j+ J1 [" z! w  J! `& W6 w4 e) I/ d
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.! ~  r; E5 k# \6 P! K3 E0 r
! g5 I! J+ j4 b1 o' }0 A! L' k
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.6 S9 }; |* f9 z9 {4 Y9 u( ]
0 B' t8 Q# e9 n/ k3 f# X5 o/ h8 C
When we were seniors, we began to think0 S9 m1 R2 z$ `, l$ J3 q% j
About college." ?' [) n  L" V% N

" r/ ^1 m' }6 o3 E$ }Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I0 q- B  i: W: y& g" P
Was going to Duke.
9 g( v7 m$ I0 z
( X; ?8 j3 z' W( FI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.! e4 O4 v8 b  T
( _! ?% J# l! Z. W8 Q$ u8 f5 M; O' |
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.. u! Y; Y" c. H4 e, s( K$ n3 y

" S- L" Y9 y, ~6 p  HKyle was valedictorian of our class.
! a+ C& v  j0 {, j  z. D; W1 S# i1 k9 O8 z9 p3 R6 G7 ?
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
$ _! w6 D4 L6 Q! u, n0 k, ~& x9 Y2 i7 F
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
2 K3 q; W, j9 |: x" q% a
- _6 Y( w- H1 pI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
! D2 p! J5 g& n  N9 _* a. P
( p" D9 q" U: S, q, P; {' WGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
: ?' s  G! V) _4 s, H2 C+ P4 i! w0 d+ [6 M
He looked great.: L& \0 C; ^8 M  e

8 n1 a: B! m- N* g4 ?He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
  z( t# p) N/ j. T. \
$ @6 F  v% i: [& e' u# ^He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.' O! U: O! K4 l1 H- D8 J9 I
; H$ d( t( Q; H7 h% R+ o) s9 X
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.  Y$ F/ L" r6 U& s- `* q

3 Q2 k% s. x! o0 U4 bBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
+ P+ r- I4 r+ W+ F6 ]7 H6 T/ E) I) d: i; t( G9 g) c$ `6 {3 t
Today was one of those days.0 L7 t* x( ]/ {$ c" W' k" n" _% ~
2 J! T* V1 s# h
I could see that he was nervous about his speech." b, C* P; M/ G0 d, }

* A0 Y5 @; a# s0 m' k0 m) ?2 PSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
! y% V) L8 ^7 d7 ?9 b, b8 C# @$ ^1 j( D5 P' o2 h
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
' G2 s' b9 i3 V( F5 f# r0 O7 ?) p/ `6 }. O! t( O9 C
"Thanks," he said.% \. V7 R) e0 n! f" G$ c

- o, Z0 H. y- ^" VAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began  c9 E+ u9 ~1 o" T) P# ~, p5 Z
- c/ a( ~+ ^# w7 j( b% A) f
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
% `- O( |. Q' l( J4 c/ D# x8 T  o7 Z3 E/ D- v
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...0 d" E2 I9 ~1 ]0 p

3 |0 G8 o% Y8 p7 _8 fI am here to tell all of you that being a
/ p3 o, H1 D: t* i3 bFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
/ T, f9 p5 y, I( ]5 r% y
4 k* W! X: R% X' S2 f3 HI am going to tell you a story."
0 m. L/ ]( q; j% Z, a. U6 C& Y, C" h9 s+ v. K8 e2 K. E" G
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.! T7 ?5 A: o. D
1 V( q- }4 f$ ?' g# _
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
8 {5 m* H' E- T# J
* j: D0 L( s5 `5 }  H% ]5 KHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.' g9 f5 {8 t' T, u% U+ {
, O( P& G) S+ C! i0 o( W+ j. Z
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.+ o& d) H+ b3 U' {3 M
/ e" t9 h0 \2 A/ \5 @" c/ ^) M! E1 _' L
"Thankfully, I was saved.
3 i: Q1 C8 K$ K: W- y$ [9 B# Q/ P' z
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
8 v: k2 S5 ^5 I1 i8 c  r% d- ?& A% b- K6 x) x( ]1 I. X
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.2 R  B/ R7 y1 g9 V

: ], C4 u" J* |# r: h) OI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.5 U- p1 s* z' P1 a) q+ a7 `
/ B2 I5 G* _- A, `
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.: l* b7 _7 y6 U5 Y
0 j- X  U3 N: m
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
2 W4 D( m! U! U1 F  D/ @, ?" p$ [
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.! Z0 _5 W; v" g9 S# u
. `$ \% B# r& L2 ~6 R
For better or for worse.9 I3 x. f' p' O

9 m4 ]( g( t  pGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
! \' m) O# {) s5 w. D% u( A! @4 j: T# V
5 ]* b* B9 |9 @- g" x! pLook for God in others.6 I5 W& c. @( S& w3 r2 \# ]1 i

$ k( v- V. X/ S* g/ ]You now have two choices, you can:) Z' S5 d$ X! V# Y
, k8 q# ]7 P8 x# C' s) w/ j
1) Pass this on to your friends or& ^% [( Z4 X# q) Z& O  T) y) B' [& g
3 m5 E+ J. Q; W+ B% Y- H
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

6 ^) K9 L. \. @) X' ~As you can see, I took choice number 1.
& L8 @4 D8 l, H. D& F1 G8 k- e"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
1 C, q# ^8 p+ K, _& u
9 z& Q% f: J0 y. \7 ^5 J9 w0 yThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history." G9 O9 N7 k( a3 ?: k4 u% @

3 V  x" ~: V" HTomorrow is mystery.
: O; z$ `& O$ |! N. I* L  d! k8 b' s5 U1 s5 Y
Today is a gift.: J4 N6 |1 D) T4 [2 T* ?; n: m

5 h, l4 F: v& O8 R. lIt's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.( m5 x3 t7 v/ R3 K- H5 g# {

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.
