The story of how the song "Happy Birthday to You" came to be, began as a

7 `8 k  h. k6 O- b6 t' TLouisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the
principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children,
9 W5 W# e+ U# p. l4 Eentitled "Good Morning to All." When Mildred combined her musical talents, as
the resident expert on spiritual songs, and as the organist for her church,
7 {8 ~; e- n9 d) mwith her sister's expertise in the area of Kindergarten Education, "Good
7 L( {3 Y) J$ k! }Morning to All" was sure to be a success.

　　The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of
9 L1 S" t! u" h: J" O+ G' Y1 pthe Kindergarten" in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became
' q1 H9 V" G8 w2 Pthe head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's
8 i1 q0 l0 p0 @5 X6 [" RTeacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the
song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult to injury, he added a
0 I1 V0 P6 Q' j: Msecond verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You."

You," the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters'
% n) p6 r% O/ l; K. Ioriginal title, "Good Morning to All."

Jessica, sprang into action and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they
) K2 h- e* {7 j8 u, ]1 d7 tproved that they, indeed, owned the melody. Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung for commercial
purposes.
