Department Mechanical
Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
% E2 _' i  D2 @* J* _Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
# w: c& a4 Q- S$ Q; p& XAssembling and starting engines
1 ^" Q  L1 n" Y5 O+ MDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
7 x$ H3 E! [/ FPerforming other functions as assigned

Good eye-hand coordination
; i: h8 u# p" d: _Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
" ]9 T8 F% n. n9 G9 p. n+ G7 GOccasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
Physical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
9 ~8 P% x+ H4 \3 \7 O# PWorking shifts, sometimes away from home
+ A+ i9 R  |* X8 Z6 C( D* lBasic technical knowledge of diesel

Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
3 a# P: w; S2 s; t# jMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
