for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians6 j1 J& ~' P4 t. b( `
on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear( }6 [! N! V% t( z. g
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet: ~) C7 r3 k) l* @0 |. t6 u
service providers.+ |9 X1 u: }9 C$ B

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are. S) v" Y' t& k( I- u* ~
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
0 `8 }6 O! W& }+ U: E" z% U* uinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops) y0 h# \; c2 Z) S, t+ U/ [: p. S
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look2 J5 f1 d: r0 Y. _2 b' h, k, W
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be4 f1 Z" V( J o% I
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
3 w: s0 X! E$ d1 e: ~3 qinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
9 P7 R0 @! `1 N Z% H1 zmarket forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
+ _) B5 q) l* \5 U* {( |6 kchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large9 v- L6 n& l' R% R
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at6 g& A1 d2 i$ {' d

line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages7 h, a8 [2 D- B1 e: j" l7 ^
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
