9 u5 l6 |' i+ D# e* K* T2 [; P The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned $ j) A: R5 ]& {! j. V9 u
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
' \: r2 v6 M+ o) a* Q6 hin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ' f; P% A" c# l1 E7 ]- g% G
excited about their opportunities. When they saw . K3 |4 E8 e& |2 g5 A' K4 ^
their church, it was very run down and needed 2 X/ C; m" T& m2 O1 h, G4 f
much work. They set a goal to have everything & l" }/ A ?% M; b1 u T. Z8 L
done in time to have their first service ; U% y, b& u( _3 e- W
on Christmas Eve.
( b( r+ H% ~+ @% s2 x8 CT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,7 u O3 R: A' `& v/ o0 K& ?0 ~
painting, etc, and on December 18 6 [# N- b* @- H5 Z9 O
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. . s: o% {9 J) p. Y7 o. P5 F
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 2 b! X$ u! Z8 E2 g
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
5 {, @( A. @! R* r2 I1 n/ n& w O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.: T) M; N1 N3 h8 T" |
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had, P; U8 P; D6 F! s$ t
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
' a# k, d+ M4 g& b0 [( L20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
3 `- v' G+ ]9 W2 S; cof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : J& C" y( P0 t+ q( R7 _- W
beginning about head high.
; }9 Z" S3 A+ w2 V" C6 a3 u' Q8 QT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
0 u* k6 c Q( v6 f1 ]and not knowing what else to do but postpone 2 b J" I5 u5 \' R7 z9 ~* _
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. ! N8 K# c" O: |4 B- d# \8 x
On the way he noticed that a local business was
* h8 k' n" _! |- L; W/ p8 ahaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he * r3 n7 S% V; j- _3 X( ^2 s
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, + @7 h8 l# |; W6 |+ _2 ~6 n' C- c3 |
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
, R8 Y* F d6 P2 C9 jwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 F" Z. [& ?: A: N q
embroidered right in the center. It was just

& ?/ I( b5 r: m1 _0 Z: \

; B9 O& T) f. J# g1 a
@& L7 y5 I* x0 g+ \
8 g# l, s8 v8 Athe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 8 @; G! ^' E U+ z& A0 l
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
% [" j7 f$ j. k$ uwoman running from the opposite direction was 9 g% g- E3 w; V3 p8 E$ v6 L
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
" U% R; |3 A4 Xinvited her to wait in the warm church for
( W6 k$ w$ ]% ethe next bus 45 minutes later.
( T1 T* Q1 Z& K* X7 r+ f4 f) u. R' b/ [8 n2 ~
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ R' i7 J; h- }1 Iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
, A( q" B& Y6 V0 f( gup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
B! z, a# H5 \; v8 P: ncould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Q* Q( z, L7 A* E5 g0 V
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center# y7 W4 T+ P9 N5 X8 z' |5 g
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"* T$ W& W/ y# B/ x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
2 ~4 x- h/ C) R% F# VThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
. P+ \- w6 v2 b) x$ P" K$ wthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
9 ?/ M+ ?8 {! F1 Tit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had * e7 H4 M i4 i1 H3 ?( X' ~2 K+ l
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
. Y/ J- j, ^+ j( t0 eT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
; {( V9 e! F- e j* ]7 z& e+ q8 dtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
; {4 C7 ~2 |* t( D: Lwoman explained that before the war she and + E0 B9 h7 N0 F" G9 _8 U
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; T) l0 l0 |" C+ ]" O! f
1 x3 e" a8 H l/ ^4 I0 h* sWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. - K( U* T. x, y/ I/ x
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. , S6 A0 C* v' u7 l4 j
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her $ g4 p7 U- B+ \5 I1 b/ [" z
husband or her home again. 8 @' j+ ^, ?8 D% Y. r; x" N
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;/ S4 W" r% h, Q; Q
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.6 C K+ G6 k3 O" q
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
, L. d+ |1 _5 R0 _- Twas the least he could do. She lived on the other0 h: Q% G, b2 b' M3 p: }
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
' s6 G2 J0 R4 ?" e8 hfor the day for a housecleaning job.
: k. t; U7 |& L$ C W0 X' s) J* X* [W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 q- ~) c7 D& }: s% A
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
5 A Q( L. `& tspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
, m- L$ H5 B: b# X9 D$ zpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door & k8 R& z8 y7 t; e" X
and many said that they would return.. ! b# n5 \4 U2 |; S# r8 Z
One older man, whom the pastor recognized # |' M/ ?6 p0 j& W8 p% c
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the . M5 h1 I$ X8 m9 b( c
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he , b4 X) \ R7 U6 X
wasn't leaving. 2 m' Z$ F) i* V9 B6 |1 y
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
( d2 V8 r" X* Ithe front wall because it was identical to one 2 S, K$ e; H' ]3 @0 k0 v: E
that his wife had made years ago when
1 n4 L2 `* m* t- y2 e, E: Y0 w' v$ K2 ?they lived in Austria before the war and how 2 y# `6 I& ~2 i8 y8 k6 m! J
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
+ }6 {; P8 l+ H* M+ G4 B9 s$ dH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
( i6 V/ V& o) {( [$ ]; B9 G& Aforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & t0 L f/ D W% H) V+ ], C* g% }
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and$ o$ [7 v" \: O
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home4 I: }5 k+ s7 J; D3 K
again all the 35 years between.
3 J) d: R3 o) j9 {! B$ {T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to + K& D9 ~2 o# O5 @" P
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 2 q; E$ t& K* \: y
Island and to the same house where the pastor
) M6 | I& h) h% |) c' ghad taken the woman three days earlier.
G8 O+ b; q" ~He helped the man climb the three flights of- v( X9 X1 G4 ^
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on8 f7 h2 l) t8 ?, d0 t) D6 q+ ]) f8 b
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
# L% S+ X- P9 nreunion he could ever imagine.1 ^# m, J2 O+ w8 d) B' X
