I guess western philosophy, mainly originated from Christianity, does not emphasize return, on the contary, they encourage people to trust god and do not hope for returns. This is one reason why there are so many people who volunteer and do good deeds and never ask for return.

I made this sentence by myself, i think if you are good on the point, then the expression is not that important any more.
