Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. . ^9 E- D2 U* u1 A6 e, V/ t) F$ w

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ! {/ L' p: z. o9 k' c
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad / ^$ ?) b, T: {' \
news to report from that meeting.: e2 f3 r( }$ ~9 k2 R Y6 ]+ [
8 l, x4 H: s6 p+ D
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
, {' u. G9 A* J/ Xundergraduate international students from the increase to the
2 E/ A8 M5 E$ \) g! b- b* |differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
* c+ \. W# s3 J' o% s% B( }students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
4 o M0 H4 v' y4 m, A4 E1 i% |tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
4 v( E; H2 [! ^Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ! g; z% w; b; s% H1 }4 H9 {
the differential for international graduate students.2 N5 i" O" G/ Y' z
) B# }; v5 M/ Y& ^4 v) r n; m' B
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
) O- X; g! P, x) G$ v1 Pincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 9 f8 l/ A) f& b b
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ' R3 o6 \2 H" g$ C* T/ I5 N
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At C' |, R2 u0 P( G
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
; v) Q- f; f2 @8 h( O. Ctuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 7 _/ v% I6 K: U# ]# i- ~' t
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
: L& v7 f: T' D9 s5 Y, d Sinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 7 r# g; d+ M7 e( U; K! ^9 p# R3 g+ ~
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 2 z4 q9 k [1 O( g w
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
9 l A- P% Y7 V( b; K! T9 ~increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ( x4 C9 L6 S/ K: Q
help. Thank you.
