Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 5 m0 a' D l4 i J- B1 |- _" i! w

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
. W. @; t& l/ A$ N2 WCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 2 _! M7 o0 @) [: o' N3 Q, N4 r
news to report from that meeting.+ {) D+ W* k/ V. I4 v
; I! Z/ ~7 V) K6 KFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current , w. C; h5 s# f/ ?7 \2 Y
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 2 ^" r& Q9 h/ d |4 T% x
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% I7 A' Y4 a G: b- O$ Qstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
3 }0 ?0 B! F0 T4 A* Ytuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 6 {" k( ^2 _- }8 p" Z3 s) A+ }
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
- }5 G5 y7 m, S" v# rthe differential for international graduate students. S% d$ n+ b- X r
! I9 F, U9 p0 d$ a, \3 x. H3 ~* C) eNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
8 z5 O+ r+ W2 ^9 [' `$ ~; r h3 Nincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
; I9 @) K: O* {- a220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
) p' z# N, V1 ^will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
/ U$ I) p, |2 @' T% C4 u0 _, Q5 |. Qleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 5 y8 Y1 q9 `' a( [& B
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 5 K8 ~2 ~ W( U/ K7 y0 A
increases once they are here.6 W" M- T3 M2 M& a
4 c' Q5 D; M4 ?& c) z, MThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the _6 Z D+ `; i) H& K& M9 [
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 9 z$ B* { m0 h3 X8 z$ g
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
( y; n# f/ g% v: G5 {- {have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 2 s7 _$ w( J+ J. Y( W
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
