Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
: {1 U4 ]* A" E% X8 i$ pCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 2 M. I& U: c& a; q _
news to report from that meeting.
9 g. F6 b& k g0 W, Z! M# f' [* [/ m( z' I" Z; n M; G+ C1 Q
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current / k* Z3 e; k. G; |+ ^
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
# d9 E; |; @% g$ Kdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% D! |( ?! W% Ystudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base + G0 ~+ h/ U8 e7 E$ V' u" w
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
7 R- W4 |2 |7 w" ?3 BAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
9 K/ D6 F5 R/ _2 S+ E, V2 Ithe differential for international graduate students.' y/ C( U, A! r. T* n
: k6 }1 L/ o1 o. B1 h* z! yNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 6 x7 C) L- v# }! h6 L) k7 K$ a9 r% T
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 8 F5 C: ~! } F( u
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
; s. q* j: E$ Zwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
& U+ H5 w/ ^- c& N" ]! Pleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 2 }) X! }0 E' }0 Z% J/ {
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected " q! a' d' _$ ^+ h6 k
increases once they are here.

- w: D$ d( i8 i YThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
" i. O c3 T8 J8 e" B! ninternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 7 p* w7 ]8 C/ E8 W: |1 i( E
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
& M7 F$ Z* I( F# H2 N1 \3 V- }have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 5 |( C: i/ H n! a
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
