Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
% H4 ]6 ?3 ~7 Z$ T! f4 J7 XCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
9 Q+ L8 R0 ~9 R% wnews to report from that meeting.

% Y7 _$ i* m: J7 FFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
7 G( x0 i0 E# x- g2 c: g. Gundergraduate international students from the increase to the - C* N* W/ _" S$ E9 l, f7 i/ z
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international N# B4 B. W' q ?! E* k
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
& p* |4 y( m3 |) ]$ F& stuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
G; h3 `3 m8 Y7 d7 JAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase * x3 K6 a; S* w' f7 d: Q& a9 v
the differential for international graduate students.6 ~) w9 [ I$ |

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ) U. R) d4 w+ ^/ G
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
3 w) |+ s6 N, l/ q+ X: G- @220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
: r3 `. Y ~! F$ b& D; |will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
5 S3 a0 P4 K6 K/ C" P4 V# d; Yleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
7 o" N0 ?- p9 Gtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected , |. e, F3 }9 H+ _6 I1 B
increases once they are here.7 P& O( j6 H' a4 J

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
5 @$ r: m5 h( r$ g3 R9 vinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 4 ]; V# G: N: G4 Y9 ~
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
