When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international ! z: Q' {! j& F$ `9 F' [ c5 x
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, 2 }: B7 ~* ?$ C" x' }1 \$ Q6 B
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers ; M, u* `# ~( ?3 D% i: v
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has 9 V' i8 C* ?- ^: l& `% _4 }6 l
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
2 O- w2 i6 }6 `& q V/ ^exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
$ j. \( m: ]! X5 r0 yadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students ' M" ^6 A. i R: j9 E/ V# s4 I
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after ' W0 _( H: e, B2 e5 V& [
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 4 D9 Q$ l" X- e! s
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
- n6 k$ V. ]) w. p+ ^4 ]4 xgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
e5 z2 d% y/ |us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
0 u9 r( {8 `6 y# C1 sadmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.1 l% L( Q; O3 Q4 f7 M
. q+ E7 ?4 R c
Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of
+ o5 m, W/ u( ]3 J+ ZAlberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
+ c% c; Z9 @3 {* h$ Ffrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate 2 z6 w) w: r1 u" w, r1 B
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

# J ?' H7 \. z4 D$ u( s* CMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
: e. S* H D6 j3 ]- Zis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 2 |: w; i4 Y- Q' }3 ^3 E
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
+ j+ u" o/ q0 \4 A5 s; V
, I+ Y7 n6 d: q2 b4 Z Cinitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
* N- O. D7 s& m; E- M- pgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
