CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
: n9 ^% b. `- ]the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
7 S3 \: Z6 m: C/ G6 W2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  4 Q0 D5 J% d! z1 z* ?
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  $ o- i9 |- n9 N5 @! N% w
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  3 Q/ d1 B' _5 x7 w' n$ P. u. Z
year following their appointment.

$ @' R, |5 R2 N! A3 K' k9 E1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000( i. Y( U5 M# c# f% B

2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.

9 h5 X; Z( L% }- u% \3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.2 W* C7 I/ A7 |

4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  ) J# c5 S" M' @
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
  L' ]2 ~/ {, n$ s/ l9 q+ ^across campus, and advertising the poll locations.+ U1 I1 X$ k5 M$ J
& s1 B: F# Q3 H9 c0 z
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
, F" Z0 e  p+ V6 `; Q$ wreferenda., M; g: |. ~+ G# b" C

( _" Z. t& v+ P8 {6 A9 E6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  1 w$ @. ]* J5 _, j& f( `; z. E& A
parties.5 {# l  K* `7 a( U
* l. i# u( ~5 _* y4 \1 p
7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
6 @. r& ?$ v& Z! Z4 ?' sreferendum.

To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  " S; w/ V$ A! H& C& s* t+ J; ~
Bylaw 2000.5 H: Z! F0 @. {- }# n2 q! O' A' V
/ Q! v5 `; @1 h. `% Y$ q" G9 m
10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  # P% ^. R4 C+ t2 O, {
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  + o- \3 b5 a! E6 ^8 b
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  3 W  n0 g% ]  U# G& o, w
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
" R0 V$ D: C) v0 h1 B! Z$ T- G2 X- a4 A
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
1 {. \' v0 ^8 b& {. _1 I3 `$ uthe course of an election/referendum.  }1 ]! d* r( ~4 m0 C/ f1 a  L
  f1 w) U& u$ u8 K2 \7 v
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
6 \; A7 t. ~8 r- M& z( B" S. b% B! ?process is in place.

13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  7 ^0 M% d, P8 [2 g

- P, F8 n. f& `" j& O14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
' p6 Q' l7 x9 H$ `; kof campaigning.

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  3 I' ^, E! X) l: X

QUALIFICATIONS:8 ]7 f  N6 e: r. T9 ~, x

' g& N" p. h6 y- x1 D" _9 h) D1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  . O9 C1 v4 f  E* _- C8 }
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  8 h0 f1 J) A% K& Z2 s4 O
Union member.4 @- d( Q0 x5 o

/ W% O- \& G1 }3 b/ i3 l6 l7 I) J5 S2) Must have some experience in student elections.
) n4 f) G4 z- f, M, h; P2 U, d# W3 D; D5 p% e7 `  K3 k
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  1 f8 l4 ~/ _0 R! r2 e+ E5 l1 {% w2 ^
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
8 e4 I/ n+ s# J# fwith the Students' Union.

4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.

: j% J, B; L4 U5 a+ c5) Excellent project management skills are required.

2 X/ l+ s2 o& F  O5 E/ r" r5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University  : p) J" ~4 ^& z- Z# K6 B- m+ K
staff, students and the general public.
