I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
# I* g% A- C8 M8 d4 ~In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
Engagement Training.
5 H. y2 J0 E0 k( i0 t
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
8 v; v$ _. O! X& `0 M$ j$ fgroups.  We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
- W; Q: |/ I0 V- F- I0 a& ~together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
, T( J6 I& G, G4 m, @Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

5 k3 B7 K, B! m# is two world cafés hosted by Plan Edmonton in 2005 and 2006.

Synopsis:

; x6 k2 S- h, O) x' Q/ ^2 x. sSet on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
* Y' \* ]1 v! J. h& Xof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
7 o& o. o2 z5 `$ F5 f2 _8 ?conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
% @2 Y5 S9 Y1 |( H& s8 c& aIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
international peacekeeping operation.

  N: q! G# ?+ l) r: Z6 ?+ dThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
- {" l  O% d  B) h7 [9 vwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
# C+ [* X; x% p+ P9 f- @7 DAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

4 g$ {/ ]( E* o2 FAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
. Z7 q8 B* V- o! l4 ]success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
0 \3 o% O. w# A) e4 j% m6 ^hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
3 O; B. p6 U8 ]& ~7 n. i& tAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
