　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
& P) c: U" y# \# p; [  C
　　One single white immensity.
' ?3 {+ c3 U9 Y* y8 F
　　The Yellow River"s swift current
! q' h2 C2 w; f! _
　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

8 U# k' |* k6 a. C( w1 e2 i. J* j　　Vying with heaven in stature.

/ o6 i3 O. Z( A8 ]　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

) [% r3 J* E: Y( G6 F　　Grows more enchanting.

! X* x5 M$ F- ]( `% ~　　This land so rich in beauty

0 j4 P2 s4 q# Y0 }# b　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

' Q0 C" b. Y8 |- o0 e8 w　　Were lacking in literary grace,

' V$ u$ e' }  A5 C* N8 G　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
4 k9 M* b: [/ N1 r, [" a% W) S9 I　　And Genghis Khan,

4 w1 J% y8 H% a& d$ [　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

3 f) T7 Q. T' U% o/ J2 C" e6 G　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

1 Y, ~3 Q+ k3 E  ?) ~3 k7 C9 R　　All are past and gone!

! p' S5 {+ R) U# q　　For truly great men
$ ^9 P+ j) v' |* v8 f
　　Look to this age alone.
