4 Q7 y# [+ W) w5 j4 pAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
% F8 H4 h% p! a5 R c& C9 WConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers./ t8 p0 T8 V3 l) p5 x" W

“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

. X! | A0 V: N2 w" H2 V. R, OUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
3 s2 Y3 Z' E; K. E“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”

He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.5 }# t! S5 u: N
“The NDP has a very firm stand. We opposed the changes and we voted against C-24. If we win the election, we will repeal C-24.” |
