Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.% e5 F+ w1 l* ?+ \3 j8 [! i
: H2 S- | Z- r0 v1 P- }7 jAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
5 H( |7 J. r, h' NConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.

) @& v! P$ V' |“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

; f5 \7 X" z+ V. c, j, D8 YUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?” a5 R( K) {/ p6 a+ V2 L
NDP candidate Jasvir Deol said the bill has many immigrant communities worried.
% C# c3 A) u: I% L“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.3 f& X+ z* n0 z1 r' H: j
He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.2 E8 F8 A) S( a5 x
“The NDP has a very firm stand. We opposed the changes and we voted against C-24. If we win the election, we will repeal C-24.” |
