A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed 4 {4 N1 ~6 t. j% }. F! Y& y- {
each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and
2 C3 {7 V/ x- b& f& gshaved perfectly applied, even though he is legally blind, moved to a
) ~* m2 s. c5 ]nursing home today.
! O) V2 { A9 p2 D
0 H8 e4 T+ q1 n$ A" K3 `# W1 g, B% LHis wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. $ I6 C8 C% Y1 u; r" @( ~( y
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home,
e: F( c/ D3 Q3 [" khe smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. u2 c1 g0 H/ D* J) p
, F! F) s' V7 |0 d; B5 A
As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual
+ {) H1 _3 Y- a* p8 Udescription of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been ; b) E/ D+ m4 k( A
hung on his window.

; d) v& t# A- L/ K6 L"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having 3 u2 [# x. I) N% {; y: s
just been presented with a new puppy. q$ N" T* O! A- d
+ Y( r, e3 {* v"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait." & J$ G; d6 B# M5 c& t. g4 K

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my ) P9 |% S- L- ^' b2 p6 {
room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how
$ U" P# X y* R. BI arrange my mind. I already decided to love it." ( |- X0 n' s& ?9 F: N9 L0 Q
( ]& h& c f8 s8 N8 y H* ]It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up.
4 q8 T7 I( f* P2 ?$ A7 K' \6 j" b* G; X. j
I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I
6 O# g a6 j& f/ ghave with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed
( v0 ~5 y' ?3 F9 G$ I; dand be thankful for the ones that do. * P/ |( `2 _) y4 u6 j% ]1 }3 _
& z( U! n: o* }' I- _; _, C* |Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new
. y1 {, x: ?' [day and all the happy memories I've stored away.

Just for this time in my life. 1 `+ b0 J8 h% @# @; [/ n4 _* p
, ]& z* q+ h ~' z2 |Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank 4 L, A/ m: n; z1 d8 Z% l ~
