, S" H7 \" f3 Z+ gam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
, k% _. s0 o% U- Nconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
9 u" w1 G2 c+ y( v" x- Vattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
7 g% J; s1 v$ T! O8 Uwill acquire language earlier and faster.
- x/ j6 ?0 c$ J; X3 K) ?( f- i2 t" v2 v p# q1 W0 D7 c
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
: g$ N4 |1 ?* C+ s1 G% W( c8 J30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
1 V( }" P# X9 a1 lvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or1 |, H1 T( u4 p# a6 `- H+ U( m0 [
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
2 p' ~! U; p7 A) F5 w1 Z8 Tmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your# R# s# _+ B# U( D" ?
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

# r' |* y3 a- U% P' w zAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common$ v1 s; G0 E# G2 W
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
" n+ v# O& ~7 k$ x9 t1 q- Sthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes. l* y7 ~. `0 J1 E" B
' a9 b6 V+ {# c9 v
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously/ l9 f: N) m8 o
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby3 @. J+ f* Z. a4 p! W0 z4 h f% X9 g+ q
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to& g5 f# D. ~; Y- N& S# b. Y3 T
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

& ~6 s' r' H# ^# z( A* FFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,2 W+ f+ r& k) C0 [# B/ g: L
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.4 I- d% f* Z- T! Y& V
@8 ?( r! U c3 vThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done" P! B* k0 H% Q- i
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she4 k5 \2 ? w( X) L! G( C
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
1 Y$ K' j" q9 C1 j, k. `- etake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate& x# Q4 u% @( N+ @

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data- y ^, [' K) r
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* t! i5 r& l4 @; E1 {6 @
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used3 l. U. o. l3 V' h* W' c
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and6 F0 m; N$ c( J. O0 X7 b v7 g" j
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
3 p8 \: p3 ?6 Wand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
]. `$ V3 k& {/ {3 ZHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific3 F& W# R* |3 y) m6 D
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child O' \" G" u" I1 O8 m$ D# A
