am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
8 a' }$ |) B) T9 Y) A3 Fconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and( L3 }) z3 {4 \* H+ _) X) }
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
; g5 ?5 w. H2 `$ Y. L4 W! Zwill acquire language earlier and faster.4 ~! d( V6 M- h8 l; \

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
& O# H2 V& v" [2 x- @% [( q: h" X30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
: L0 [- T3 |" ]videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
: T3 Y8 l: X) E9 q7 csimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you; N. F- @1 x9 ~2 g; {$ u h7 W
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
8 h$ s3 F/ D2 G4 Ebaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common1 O6 F+ b* e, u! I: `' y* t
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
2 I6 Q4 K/ E& R" a9 C) C$ Wthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously |; j% Z! K9 _: Z0 ~
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
1 ? @ n& d2 Q9 F+ W) ~knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to# l) {8 A7 k2 \5 f* T) q0 [6 }
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

0 m; j/ Z' ^3 f+ B* @Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
2 g. E% j' |" t/ `the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
% I8 T9 a( |0 ^6 zover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
2 v! U3 i \ U8 x8 G; _7 p8 [is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will. H6 i( y" o' t9 a9 `9 c/ R
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

' ~& w! J9 @* e% VAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data" w/ H" {9 s: P# T, m7 |9 \8 |
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
- ?4 |+ B* u8 o" jvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
1 a4 d3 ^, F2 L6 U. z) R6 Xin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and5 G g* j: V' _
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
2 X8 D# H* H: Y6 g: yand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
' Q; a( ~6 ~9 A9 R0 |3 i) GHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
+ x2 b5 Y0 Q% G N) D Gjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
