Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall& a$ @: Z* A P! x1 z; g' v
not do any of the following:
( Q7 ~* n; b9 h(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor" W1 p: t" G% s- p# r( `
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
2 q8 }8 o! j. J2 `) s(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor; {, @8 c9 l9 E( [9 y/ ?# e% W
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;* ]( j: [1 p& z" u# d+ m0 A
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
; M! j! @- k5 }3 l# c1 ^- S, Mpermit another person% L2 L: I. p; O$ N& j
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
0 p1 }5 r5 M# a: y/ i3 u(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 Y; i* b. ~& o3 b" p! xunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
( B% u+ ~0 q Q. V" y(d) give or lend a financial
5 g1 {6 n; m5 B U: R8 Aresponsibility card or a copy of it6 k6 G. C& O* A# M+ ]" G
to a person not entitled to have that financial
2 z+ i9 a- A7 n. k iresponsibility card or copy.+ w4 @( n! j" ?# Y; L3 b) M

8 A6 n3 E! ^! Dwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of1 v! r+ H7 b! k
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection' q* O9 l! p2 E1 P
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is$ @2 h2 P+ h! U
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
+ Z& P5 q! C w: j+ p4 wAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this+ y, H2 H/ L# m* o2 ?: d4 o2 H

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
3 S# ]# @/ k, f2 K- k+ T3 Zfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
& } Y& _8 w' [9 H: \Insurance Act- ? q9 @9 a( V5 u' X' e3 }9 T
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy- X! B5 p6 a, Q( X0 j
outside Alberta.7 c/ N0 P: d% n8 h+ }+ {8 h" P. U( |

0 w9 Z0 U0 D' s! o$ JA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection; C/ E N. h1 z! A( b
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,. f. K) I+ L7 J0 [0 g& }* h _9 x- I/ v; S
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
1 B! |4 e& R5 o8 Wand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to

more than 6 months
